Mythbusters did two episodes in "Explosive Decompression", basically bullet through the fuselage of a plane at altitude.

still doesn't strike me as being terribly brilliant. What happens when it goes through something vital like a fuel line, flight computer, or some other critically important system...

I have seen that done that many times as an Air Marshal in the 1970's with no effect on pressurization or metal fatigue

It's an urban myth - "There is only one known instance in which a bullet hole in an aircraft frame yanked objects across the plane, expanded and sucked a person out into the sky - in a James Bond movie !

while flying then get an Aircraft Bullet Hole Plug
Kit. These bullet hole plugs were carried on most USAF bombers during WWII.

I like the idea of the crew packing like Dirty Harry - I'd take my chances with a little gunfire if the other option was crashing the plane.

I don't think a .17 HMR can even do that.
