The listings are coming down as we speak :(  I was just bidding on a Wenger Business Tool.  It had about five minutes left to run when the listing was pulled  >:(

Neil

5 mins!?!?

Oh come on!  ::)

I think I said something quite similar  :angel:

This is what really gets to me.  Its items such as this I'll miss, just some bod clearing stuff out of their drawers, tool boxes.  How many knives/SAKs/tools will now just get tossed in the bin  :cry:

Neil

That is the awful potential , that is how I got my Riveted PST . Seller did not know a thing about tools , just thought they could a couple of bucks for it. They got the cash I got deliriously happy & no one got hurt & the tool did not get ditched. What a bunch of punt headed feckers . Any way of finding out who drove this decision or get the CEO of UK Ebay's email & we can send him/her LOTS of emails. >:D

An awful lot of tools are going to get wasted :( Stopping an auction with 5 minutes to go is just petty. Bunch of muppets. I am now going to walk off grumbling and muttering to myself.

The sellers haven't gone away just because ebay is embargoing knives.
The established ones have their own websites.

Technically no.  The only issue is that of age verification.  eBay had a reasonable set up in that they did an online verification via credit card to ensure the buyers were not minors.

Realistically no thug is going to choose a SAK as a weapon or for that matter bother to buy one online.  What is an issue though is sting operations by trading Standards or even the media :(

UK sellers are still listing Leatherman tools as recently as last night. Example click here.

WTF is going on? In the last 24 hours, I have bought, and successfully completed the transaction in both cases, a Micra and a Squirt S4 form US sellers. At no point have I even seen a message warning me not to do it, asking me to confirm my age or anything. Is it possible that ebay have decided that these aren't "knives"?

Most likely they are not blocking UK buyers from buying US listings.  I have noticed almost no SAKs showing on .uk from US sellers but if you log directy into .com they are there.  I successfully listed a SAK on .com the other day and will try a couple more this weekend; hopefully they don't get pulled by nanny.  The whole situation is a bit of a joke but I guess that's in order as the ban and the cause of it was a farce in the first place  ::)

I'm still unsure as to what I can and can't do.  Am I supposed to be able to log on to .com and buy?  If I am then it makes a complete farce of what they are doing (even more so I mean).  Remember the root cause of this was some researcher buying knives from America that were dubious here.  What then is the point in just banning sales in the UK and Ireland?  :ahhh

The point is that ebay UK need to distract attention from the fact that they have no real control over what their site is used for! Remember that the original reason for this "ban" was that they found the knife laws in the respective countries too complicated to understand, so the easiest thing to do was ban the sale of all knives.

I think we can see that so far, they are struggling to even manage that!

I think Neil's got it about right - this is all a PR stunt so that the tabloid reading, watchdog watching public can see that ebay have banned the sale of these evil weapons.

And the licensed importers who have been ripping us off blind for years will profit even more from it, just to rub salt into the wound.
I used to come here a lot.

I understand that it has been a publicity stunt from the start, but I can only see it coming back to bit them in the bum if someone spots that it has been done only half baked.   :think:  Ah well, that's their concern and I certainly won't be loosing sleep over it.

That's a good point Gareth - because it really might embarrass them even further.

To think that if they had responded to the Watchdog report by saying something like "Ebay are verry sorry, we will be taking action against those selling illegal weapons on our website, and will be reviewing our monitoring procedures", everyone would have been happy! Watchdog would have had their admission and buggered off to film dodgy plumbers and loan sharks as they're best at!

Instead, this ::)

I just read this in an auction for something else:

Quote
DUE to new eBay regulations We can no longer offer Sharpened items for sale in The UK or Ireland. So any Buyers that are located in these locations will be refunded and the transaction canceled.

This is not something we decided to do, this is something that was handed down from eBay.co.uk, We do not agree with the new policy, and the blanket Ban covers items that are completely legal in these countries. eBay has decided its easier to Ban all  than to police the improper items.
