Utilize previous experience is a good thing.

Start fresh and built and develop is a good approach.

Have you checked out MIKE ROWE, (Dirty Jobs fame) on Facebook, he has a Foundation that provides scholarships for such types of training and education.  Young or old, anything dealing with learning a skill.

I have probably stated that my life is dynamic and very much in a state of flux right now. There are a lot of different avenues I could pursue, and finding a new place to live is on the front burner. The career change will sort itself out in due time. And Mike Rowe's foundation is well worth looking into. Thanks to all for the suggestions and encouragement! :cheers:

Hi FarmerX, I came across this thread only now. I think some of the topics and views mentioned before in this thread are well summarized in the concept of ikigai. It is not like a big revelation - it feels kind of obvious when you read it/see it, but it might help with conceptual thinking - there are all aspects to consider. The goal is to be in the center, but typically you do not get there with just a one thing/profession - unless you are really lucky (and I do not know anyone whose job would fullfill all the aspects) - so it is a combination of profession, hobies etc... There might be something you like and can be paid for (I apprecite the inclusion of this realistic aspect) but you are not good at it or missing formal qualification - hence as other suggested further training/school is the way to go.
I am in the process of the job change right now. What helped me in the early stages was to put down my wants, needs, preferences, fears on paper rather then just mull them in head.
As well what helped was to make the list long - there is a concept of list with 100 items. It sound crazy to put down list of 100 reasons for a job change, but the big number really helps to go deeper. To put down 10 is easy - but you stay on the surface. At 50 it feels good, you get angry at about 70 (why the hell I am doing this...) and finally the big release at 100 and you migt be surprised what you see in the list.
I think it was very good move from your end to do the ONET  self assesment - to understand and get insights about your personality and related preferences is important. Have you tried the 16 personalities test?

I really like it- I found it very insightful (I am always surprised how someone can describe you so precisely with just a several question..) and they provide among other things at the end as well job tips that might suit you. I know I tend to overanalyze things but this one is good!

I hope that the most burning issue on your list  - to find a new place to live - will get resolved to your satisfaction. But I guess the decision about new place to live and new job can't be seperated - so maybe further assesment about the job migh help with the dwelling decision as well. I guess it is not an easy situation - I hope all work out for you well at the end.

Ikigai has some potential, but it seems like the things I like and am passionate about either have limited real-world application, are too competitive, and/or don't pay well. Yet I'll look into it and see if I can make a good plan out of it. I took a Meyers-Briggs personality test in 2009, and my results on the 16 Personalities were the same: ISTJ-A. As it turns out, the guy who will likely become my landlord has a flooring business that's presently mothballed. The house he's buying could use some minor tile work, and he's going to show me how to lay that stuff. So I might be doing flooring. Things are still very much up in the air, but it's a possibility.

Must start a thread with a photo of at least five (5) of your watches Build your own version of an MRE using off-the-shelf components, post a photo of the completed MRE and store at room temperature for 6 days or more. Stuff like that is always good for a between job thing anyway. I know a couple guys who never stay at a job for long, but can always get by doing a little handiwork, working on cars, etc.

Not too long ago, I got one of the VA News e-mails. In it was a link to a list of free courses for veterans offered by IBM. Next think you know, I created an account. I'm now taking an introduction to web development course. Things are looking up!

That is good.  A lot of that can be done from home and can even be great as side job or pick-up work for small companies or individuals just starting out.

If the new skills don’t turn into new a new career, at least they will hopefully help until something else comes along.
