That's an old picture of some of the Minimag I have collected long ago.  Probably one of the first flashlights I owned when I first joined Scout, and it really all started from there.

Fraz labs are definitely tough lights, although they have thinned down the bulk some since I’ve been following them.

Here is a picture of one of my older Fraz Lab along with another QTC light, the Peak LED Solutions Eiger.
(Image removed from quote.)
As you have once mentioned, Fraz Lab did a pretty good job implementing the QTC tech into their flashlight, so I could actually make use of that different gradient of light output.  But would you think Peak solutions projucts are well executed enough to be have the samiliar precision as Fraz Lab?

Day 16

Found another one of these Harbor Freight lights, along with an old glowstick (flashlight adjacent) in my nightstand. Past me made sure I was well prepared in case the power went out at night, even if present me forgot about him. I wonder if the glowstick would still work, it's gotta be at least 15 years old, probably 20.
Maybe saving this for a special occasion?  I have heard the new glowstick could glow for a long, long time...it used to be just a few hours top, now they could literally glow for a day.

Forgot I had my Kilimanjaro flashlights stashed in my office.  It' one of those cheapie flashlights but comes in handy when the power goes out.

(Image removed from quote.)
I don't know where I get that from--but IIRC, 80-90% of how human preceive the world relies on vision alone.  So sometimes I think the bright rays of flashlight does calm my nerves, especially when I am in unfamilar situation or environment.

I don't recall ever seeing that green!

I'll get a photo for y'awl shortly. Hopefully Xfinity will get my Wi-Fi back in working order soon. :twak:

Peak are not as good as Fraz.  With Peak, you still get gradients but the lower brightness levels are more sensitive and may have flickering. I think this is do to the battery compartment not being as tight, so getting the correct pressure is a little touchy at first.  This was especially true with the Logan and using different battery sizes.

Yes, the Fraz is on the right and definitely formidable.  If I remember correctly this one was originally called the Lil’ Tank and that name was very appropriate.  Their lights are not the lightest or smallest, but if you want a light that you could trust to still work doesn’t matter what abuse you throw at it, I think this is pretty close.

Thanks to Sos24's suggestion, I was able to get a hold of Fraz Lab QTC light.  Such a robust little light, and probably one of the most bomb proof light out there since there is virtually almost no electronics.

So basically this Fraz lab light is a direct drive light with a variable resistor to control the brightness, if you tighten the head/body, the light gets brighter, or vice versa.

I left the flashlight scene for many years, and a lot has happened in between.  One being QTC tech used in the flashlight industry.  Though I suspect it never fully caught on, due to how difficult it was to fully implement it into the lights.  But the idea of using a resistor/material where mechanical compression could lead to different degree of conductivity is pretty intriguing.

Fraz labs are definitely tough lights, although they have thinned down the bulk some since I’ve been following them.

Plus for this Olight, the pivoting head.
Minus for this Olight, weird proprietary ring charger. Not sure why they couldn't slap a USB port on the bottom, it's not exactly tiny.

Seeing how there was interest in the Fraz, I thought I’d take a picture of the older lil’ Tank vs the newer QT-L Nugget.

The craftsmanship on both is amazing, but with the comparison pictures it becomes evident how much effort has gone in to make the light smaller while still keeping the durability.

The proprietary charging setups are probably the main reason I’ve never taken a serious look at Olight.  I really would like to standardize on USB-C.

Proprietary hardware is a con for me, too. In that case, I'd really hope it doesn't have a hard-wired battery.

That looks kinda cool. How functional is it?

1,800 lumens is probably overkil for my needs, but that's another I'll check out.

:like: Will definitely be checking into those.

Though I'm not participating, I thought y'awl might like to see my flashlight accumulation.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

We see, clockwise from top left:

A Mag-Lite Solitaire. It is really showing its age (back in 1991, I was a lot more okay with gratuitous finish wear). At minimum, it needs a new bulb. Powered by a single AAA cell. Should tail-stand okay. Its days of being a user might be over.

A newer Mini Mag-Lite. Awlso needs a new bulb, but is in much better condition than the Solitaire. Powered by two AA cells. Designed to tail-stand, of course. Will probably see limited use when the bulb is replaced.

A Streamlight Stylus Pro. This one works, as long as you're okay with 90 lumens. Powered by two AAA cells. Forget tail-standing. It may see lots of carry if I can ever be bugged to repair its pouch. When I'm on generator power, it's my go-to flashlight.

A LumiTact G700. Awlso in working order. Powered by three AAA cells. Tail-stands okay even with the lanyard attached. It doesn't see much use due to its bulk and five modes (including two strobes) that must be cycled through.

An Olight I1R2-EOS. Works great. Has a hard-wired battery that charges with a micro USB. Output is 5 or 150 lumens, but forget tail-standing. A very short length of 3/4" PEX might be able to serve as a tail-stand adapter, though. This is my go-to light if I'm not on generator power.

A Jungle Store Special headlamp. Like the Olight, its hard-wired battery is charged with a micro USB. It has two brightness levels, plus red light. It serves its purpose, but I intend to supplement ot replace it with a headlamp powered by alkaline batteries.

Another no-name flashlight, probably a Jungle Store Special. No clue as to its output, but it's powered by four LR44 button cells. An erratic switch means the telescoping magnet in its tail is far more useful than its LED.

With awl that said, I'm not a flashlight enthusiast to the degree that Sos24 is...but I am an advocate for everyone owning a flashlight that is powered by alkaline batteries. There are two reasons for that. One, you can go from dead battery to full capacity in 30 seconds rather than 75 minutes. Two, if your power resources are limited, you can use them to charge things with hard-wired batteries (like most modern cell phones).

If you made it through that verbosity... :salute:

This one was a gift, so I'm just using it and not worrying about it too much. By the time it stops holding a charge well, I expect we'll have lights imbedded in our eyeballs or something anyway.

Day 18

HDS Rotary.  Got this via a trade with Sos24   I was just getting back into the flashlight scene, and this rotary control is definitely mind blowing when I first receive it.  The low is a real low, and you could actually look straight into the lens and may not even notice it in broad daylight.  I am always a big fan of their beamshot, just a great balance between spot and spill, without any artifacts.

My first HDS was from a long time ago, and way back when LED tech was just being used, HDS was already offering lights with multiple level outputs and good regulation.  My original HDS EDC60 was still working well till this day, it speaks volume about its reliability.

Thanks for the write up!  Pretty neat!

Which one is your favorite or see most use?  Though I appreciate the weight saving and the power from lithium rechargeable, I too am a big advocate for AA/AAA lights.  They are the most common to find, and I think they are great for different emergency scenario.

While I like the Mag-Lites for their nostalgia factor (one was nearly always on my belt during my two deployments), I have to admit they've been outclassed. The LumiTact was a gift from Mrs. FX. Though it's a little much for urban carry, it'll stay with me, maybe in a camping kit. My favorites and most frequent users are the Olight and the Streamlight. I have to wonder how long the Olight's battery can hang on.

More great stuff, y'awl! :tu:
