Scout? Pattern Challenge in July
on: May 05, 2024, 05:16:11 PM
The last couple years, we've done a brand specific challenge to go along with the Dean51 Memorial. I was thinking it might be fun to do a pattern challenge instead. I have a whole pile of scouts I've been meaning to carry, but open to suggestions if people would rather whip out the trappers or something. Could also make it pattern agnostic and you have to stick with a single pattern, but everyone can pick their own. Thoughts?

All the pre 07 soldiers (and the Pioneer) count, IMO. Scout is blade, awl, opener, driver on a slip joint. Most popular examples are probably the Imperial Kamp King and Mil K Demo Knife, but most companies have made one (part of the fun).

We had a thread on it here last year: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,91084.msg2425045.html#msg2425045

I’ll defer to SteveC, but I think historically Vic stuff has not counted for the Dean51 Trad Challenges.

Thats a good thread. When I think scout, I think bolsters and bail. But the pioneer does have the toolset.

Correct, Victorinox are not included in the Traditional challenge.

The Scout idea is solid!  If you have several members follow suit, then a badge is possible.

Last year, I went for my CASE BADGE as I already had the Dean.

Others have gone for the GEC BADGE.

THE Dean 51 Challenge covers a very broad spectrum of traditional knives and a SCOUT option would a great challenge in a challenge.

Now if a HOBO would fall into my lap😱
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

I have a Scout or three laying around, and they should qualify for the SAK-Alike badge. Since I believe the Anniversary challenge badge is the one exception to the one challenge badge per month rule, I'd be in for the Scout challenge.

If this will be a challenge within the  challenge, you only need to sign up in the Dean51 thread that Steve started.
After your name declare your path CASE, GEC, or Scout.

This way if have the Dean 51 badge you obtain a new badge during a repeat.

Last year I did the CASE.

Also, Steve already mentioned in that thread that even if a few go for Scout path a badge can be arranged.

A WIN WIN

I originally stopped by  to share pictures of my only Scout pattern (traditional)

Actually I have two of the same, acquired a year a part, first at a flea market and second one at a CASE discount table at a Sharp Hands event.

And then I consider this my ultimate scout type knife and is part of my camp kitchen now. A OHT

I have one Case scout that'll probably come out to play. I really want them to bring it back. There's no one making any kind of multitool on the East Coast that I know of. I think they got the openers from Camilus or ImpSchrade though, so seems like a longshot.

At least we picked a cheap one. Unless you want to get the fancy Boker. We're all eager to hear if it's worth $300+.

If people want something cheap and "name brand", the old Ireland Schrades (usually red scale-no bolsters) are at least as good as the US ones and often go for half the price, or less, since everyone assumes they're junk. I carried both an Irish and US for a month during the country of origin challenge, and I actually liked the Irish one a bit more. Sometimes you can even find them NIB for cheapish.

That being said, it's such a straightforward pattern that the modern Marbles, Rough Ryders, etc. generally seem to be good.

You can also go hunt around and try to find your BY-Demo-knife if you want something a little special.

That Boker camp knife is a nice one, but not $300 nice.  I might "peruse" fleaBay and see what catches my eye.

A Camillus 99 with Delrin would be a good jumping-off point. They shouldn't be hard to find or expensive.

I just remembered, I have a Camillus Scout second in my Camillus box. The tang stamp what been defaced, but it is a Camillus in blue synthetic.  As bout the size of my scout jr if not larger.

PS:  the Marbles scout pattern is a bargain for sure.  Stout and capable.  Mine is only a blade and can opener, two blades.  SMkWs had last year have not checked of late.

The "GI Jack"? Cool little knife. I wish more companies would play with the blade and one tool patterns.

After reading the other thread, as to what qualifies as a Scout, would this Colonial Sportsman qualify as a scout even though it doesn't have the metal bolsters?

Since I mentioned. I thought it appropriate to include pictures.

My GI JACK (left) and the Scout knife (Camillus 2nd?)

If interested, the cap lifter and awl are both locking blades on the scout. 😉

The Scout knife (Camillus 2nd?)
I think you're right. My ChannelLock blue 27 has the tang stamp similarly X'd out.
