Happy birthday!

Day 14

Traveler cut the zipties off a pair of new collapsible shovels.  I heard that Costco in the Great White North has the Skeletool bundle back. No luck here, but these are a nice upgrade to the ones we kept in the cars, so a worthwhile trip.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, y'awl! :hatsoff: I did have some "birthday cake," as seen here.

@BPRoberts: I'll have to see what this Skeletool combo pack is. And those shovels look pretty useful!

@LoopCutter: what sort of birds are you feeding?

@LoopCutter: what sort of birds are you feeding?
Cardinals, Hummingbirds, Eastern Bluebirds, Sparrows, Crows, BlueJays, House Finches, cow Birds, Red Wing Blavk Birds, Mourning Doves, Downey WoodPeckers, YellowBelly. To name  me a few.

Then because of  the activity, Red Tail Hawk and Parigrine Falcon, and a few other types, visit to nab a bird that is not paying attention.

CooperHawk loves to surprise the Mourning Dove, by approaching from the wet and starle one or two Doves who the try to  fly up and over my house. It is a 2 story, and a Dove will slam into the house, become dazed, crack to the crown, where the Hawk picks his prey apart for a meal.

Circle of life

Day 15

Outdoor Wenger photo.  I watched the deer coming and going about all day.  Probably all night too.  I think they like the cooler weather.  I need to walk up the little spring and see if there is still water in it.  Forgot to put out a snack for the smaller omnivores last night.  It is painful to think of some small furbearer lying in a tree hollow somewhere with a growly tummy and a tear in its wee eye.  The rascals dug up quite a few of my flower bulbs looking for grubs or something.  I might just pick them up and replant in the spring.  The bulbs, not the vermin.  Best wishes.  G

IMR may have misidentified friend Aztec's 'some kind of Backpacker' knife.  I said it was an Adirondack.  That would be a Viking tool set with a Hiker graphic and a blade lock.  Aztec's specimen doesn't have a blade lock.
Precise was the importer of the Wenger in question.  You can see their etch on the blade.  Precise also doesn't help by calling the locking main blade a 'packlock'.  Wenger generally called the pressure lock on the screwdriver/cap lifter a packlock.  You can't tell from the photo in the 79 Precise catalog whether the Adirondack has a blade lock or not.  The description says it does.
Wenger identification has lots of exceptions, changes, and weird snags.  What can I say?  Best wishes.  G

Day 15

Traveler with its twin, a Climber. I guess a Climber Small would technically be closer, but that's not in the budget. This is my kitchen drawer SAK, but I may swap in the Wenger at the end of the month due to the great can opener.

First, thanks to awl for the birthday wishes! :hatsoff: It was a pretty quiet day, which is okay by me.

@Echotech: 1980 is a special year for me, but the person who made it so isn't into SAKs.

@AzteCypher: :drool:

@z1913: I like the wood scales! :tu:

@ReamerPunch: I was awlso wondering if you're sharpening the can opener. I guess they need that after a time, too.

@IMR4198: if the deer like the cooler weather, I don't blame them. I look forward to highs in the 60s.

@Antti Lammi: that's a perfect SAK for kitchen duty!

@LoopCutter: quite a variety of avian life you have outside! And no doubt you'll soon get new grandkid photos soon.

@BPRoberts: I'm giving some thought to picking up a Wenger that I can keep in "awlways ready" status for can opening.

Another great day, y'awl! :2tu:

Day 15

Hard to believe we're halfway through the challenge! There was no use today, so just a glamour shot.

The elusive Premier.

Or maybe not so elusive as it was already presented by two other co-challengers before, but anyway - what not to like about this simple knife?

Day 16

I decided to switch Wengers in the middle of the stream.  The original plan was to carry a 65mm Esquire for the whole term, but finally teeny knife syndrome took control of me.  I fought it off with internal applications of chocolate ice cream and meditation.  Meditation, medication, whatever.  I forget.
I didn't feel like scuffing up a new Wenger, so I decided to carry my Sad SAK Handyman.  I picked this one up from the Surprise Box just so I wouldn't mess up something good during this challenge.  It is the sort of thing that I could see at a flea market table priced for $2.  At that price, I would look it over and offer a dollar.  To be fair, it is perfectly functional.  Scale tools are gone and so is the Wenger emblem.  The scale that the Wenger emblem was on is gone as well.  Pride of ownership is non-existent.  I cut the key chain hickey off.
So that's it.  It is a Wenger Handyman.  Four layer.  Usual basic tools, plus scissors, nail file, and a saw.  I took a photo of it along with a bank covered with goldenrod.  There are two large peculiar mushrooms in the picture as well.  I wonder if they are poisonous?  Wait a minute.  Those might be some kind of microwave dishes.  Never mind.  Best wishes.  G

@AzteCypher: I :like: that one, too. I'm happy it went to you!

@ReamerPunch: I'll be interested to hear how well the Flex works out for you.

@Echotech: I've never closed a blade on a bail (maybe because a bail isn't as likely to flop around as a keyring is?). However, I've closed back layer awls on keyrings more often than I'd care to admit. Maybe Wenger was on to something with that short length of chain?

@z1913: they're out there. I'll probably be looking for a packaged one for a while, though.

@Humayd A R Mahomedy: :hatsoff: and safety first when poking holes in lighters!

@IMR4198: maybe that would be a.good candidate for receipt of some custom scales?

Another great day, y'awl! :2tu:

Day 16

For once, I'm not in a hurry to post. One could get a few things done with this combo. The Griffin Pocket Tool's scorer works surprisingly well on lumber.
