Day 29/30: Pioneer Pioneer: My First (Respectful) Alox SAK Mod!

Today was a day of firsts: my first attempt at modding an Alox SAK, and a newfound respect for the skills of SAK modders everywhere!

I took on the challenge of transforming my Alox Pioneer into a streamlined one-layer tool, keeping just the blade and awl. Let's just say, there's a reason these mods often look effortless online! Here are my hard-earned lessons:

Drilling is tricky! Especially that pesky middle pin.
Precision is key! you can damage the Alox scales as the drill slips from the rounded pins.
Peening takes practice! My attempts left a lot to be desired (hello, future Torx screws!).
Less is often more! Over-enthusiastic peening led to some seriously tight tool action.

:hatsoff: Big shout-out to all the SAK modders out there!  Your skills are truly impressive. While my Pioneer may not be winning any beauty contests right now, but it now feels more personal and I'll proudly carry it!
Fun, isn’t it??!!

I modded my Pioneer X a few years ago. Replaced brass rod with threaded pivots. While at it I modded the can opener and removed the key ring nub.

I know what you mean by messing up the scales. I did a number on mine. Haha. But hey, it’s a user anyway!!

Layer, I removed the blade and awl, used it with the opener layer and scissors. Carried it with a dedicated knife, usually my Spyderco Autonomy 2.

Went back and forth some, then a few days ago, I redid it again. Just like you, went with the slim line blade/awl combo.

Yours looks great, keep trying!!

Good job on the mod!  Drilling is a pain, I have found though that the sharper the drill bit the better off you'll be.  Less chance of walking and slippage.  I only use carbide drill bits now.  For peening, it does take practice.  I've modded some punches to be concave, to round the peen nicely, also gives it a nice factory look.

Thank you.. I'll definitely try your suggestions!!

Unwrapping a 4000 amp breaker and inatall it in some swithgear.
The main breaker in my house is rated at maybe five percent of that. Do take awl necessary precautions!

Opening a quick snack with my Danish Bantam.
 And I ain't talkin' about the snack...

I like to sharpen the corner of the tool to use as a package opener.
More on sharpening combo tools later. Hope your Wi-Fi is now squared away!

My first attempt at modding an Alox SAK...
I may mod SAKs someday, but right now, acquiring the needed tools is impractical.  Your first attempt looks good to me. Keep at it; practice makes perfect!

Day 29

WI-FI DOWN!!! :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh
Due to the Wi-Fi being OOC, I'm posting at the library. Hopefully it'll be back up and running when I get home.

Today I'll show one of my all-time favorite SAKs.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I decided to sell this green Farmer a while back. Then a life-changing event happened (you No Lifers will know what I'm talking about). SurgeUK stepped up, bought it, and gifted it right back to me. I guess it's meant to stay with me. I'm so grateful to have such wonderful friends on this board! :hatsoff:

I awlso finally got to opening a can with the dedicated can opener.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Making the initial cut is easier with the dedicated can opener, and it cuts cleaner. But the combo tool feels more natural (to me, anyway). Maybe one day I'll try sharpening the tip of a combo tool some and see if things even up a little.

The potatoes were seasoned with salt, pepper, and ranch dressing mix.

Day 30. Still carrying the 94 Wenger Alox Soldier. Great knife, over the past 30 days I’ve carried this knife a majority of the time.  It has served me well though a variety of mundane tasks such an opening boxes and packaging and duties such as food preparation.   The Alox soldier is a great edc!

Yes it is great!!

My Wenger Soldier was the first SAK I ever bought. Carried it exclusively for several years. Still a great tool. Loved it so much I bought a back up, brand new in the box. Doubt it ever gets used because nowadays I tend to carry my modded Pioneer X with my Spyderco Autonomy 2.

But the Wenger Soldier is still my most cherished SAK. I even went so far as to work on making replacement bails, back in the day. Never got one that looks as good as OEM.

What sort of filtration system do you have? I'm guessing it's a little different from my Brita.

That's a bummer, but there's only so much they can do about the crowdedness.

As usual, great stuff from awl! :2tu:

Before I post the final official challenge photo, some thoughts. The Alox Bantam is one of my favorite carriers for its slim form, but all Alox SAKs are great, be they smooth or checkered (I have yet to own a ribbed one). Seeing the variety that y'awl presented was the best part of the challenge. Thanks to awl my fellow challengers for the great photos, and to lazar for hosting it! :hatsoff:

Day 30

Today I'll show a Wenger Patriot. The prop (maybe that's a bit off, as helicopters don't have props) is a Metal Earth model of the AH-64 Apache. It was gifted to me by MadPlumbarian, and I finally finished it this morning, just in time for the Day 30 photo.

Day 28:

I took off from work to attend an off-season FIRST Robotics competition and to cheer on the team that I help out as an adult mentor. Their robot had some major issues after a competition season full of hard knocks, but none that a SAK would fix. So no alox use on Friday.

Day 30!!!!

Going to end this glorious challenge with the SAK that started it all, for me. My very first SAK purchased and the one I carried for several years, exclusively.

Pictured with a snake skin found in the yard. Hung it on my poor dilapidated mailbox. I hit it accidentally and broke it off. Had to cobble it back together until I can get it properly replaced. lol
