Day 30/30: Ode to the 93mm Alox - The Everyday Essential

This month-long journey with my Alox EDC has been fun, but one thing remains constant: my love for the 93mm Alox size. Some tools were too big, some too small, but the 93mm Alox emerged as the perfect fit for my everyday needs.

On the larger end, the Victorinox Alox Evoke, with its impressive single blade, felt like overkill. While undeniably cool, its bulk made it a challenge to carry comfortably. It was simply too much knife for my typical tasks.

The 84mm Alox offered a more reasonable size compared to the Evoke. It retained some pocket presence but felt a touch small. Functionality-wise, it offered a good balance, but for my needs, the extra 9mm of the 93mm Alox provided a bit more utility.

The 58mm Alox, while incredibly compact and discreet, felt a bit too limited. Its small size made some tasks, like slicing fruit quite awkward.

The 93mm Alox, however, is the EDC "just right" size. It disappears seamlessly into my pocket, yet offers a surprising amount of functionality. The blade tackles everyday tasks with ease, and its slim profile ensures comfortable carry.

This little powerhouse is a testament to the idea that size matters, but so does design. The 93mm Alox strikes the perfect balance: compact, versatile, and always ready for action. Here's to my pocket-sized hero!

 :iagree:

The 93mm in general, and the pioneer specifically, is where it’s at for me. One thing I like about the 93 over the 84 is its equal end pattern. Each end is the same size, not asymmetrical like on 84/91 models.

As I suspected, this wasn’t much of a “challenge” considering my edc for the past 12 years has been a pioneer and either an alox classic or alox rambler on the keys. Even though I might be tempted sometimes by the expanded tool offerings on some 91mm models, I’ve just become so used to the pioneer it’s hard to use anything else. Even for this challenge, I couldn’t bring myself to drop a different alox in my pocket for a day, I just wanted to carry the pioneer. Though I did get some glamor shots of the other alox in.

I guess for many it may be boring and repetitive, but it just works for me.

DAY 30

Final day and I have been using the farmer x (mainly the scissors) to help make a floating candle effect for a friends wedding (think Harry Potter)....I stupidly didn't take a photo as it has been a rush to and we have been at it for 7 hours...120 led candle on 160 metres of fishing line....I'll update the with picture showing it up on the wedding day...

So a picture of the alox bantom helped to open a can of baked beans when the ring pull broke.....worked very well

I have found that the alox farmer x is my favorite alox, but this challenge has been difficult for me, as a Leatherman carrier, only carrying the alox as my primary tool found that there were many tasks I couldn't do.

Day 30

Final day and finished this 84mm red Alox mod just in time!  It has the large blade, file, saw, opener layer and an awl on the back side.  Tools were acid etched and aluminum washed.  Also polished the edges of the factory liners.

What sort of filtration system do you have? I'm guessing it's a little different from my Brita.

Just the one that came with the fridge.  Mom liked the Brita water filter so that's what we used growing up and continued to use that until the wife and I bought our first fridge that had a built in filter.

@lazar - That's an awesome looking Alox right there!!

Day 30

Just a small gathering of my current Alox.

Awesome challenge folks.  I've gained a new appreciation for the Alox, so much so, that I'd like to improve my modding skills so I can create a custom Alox for myself.  Thanks to lazar for hosting this challenge!

Well does not show the full effect, but you get the idea of the candles we were doing...they will go up on to the ceiling of the venue suspended on fishing line and hook system.....should look good at night time.

What an awesome build!
Did you have to modify the alox scales in any way in order to have a flush fit over the outer liners? Are all the liners aluminum, or have you also used the thinner (nickel silver?) liner of an alox model?
Thanks for these pics at the end of a beautiful challenge!

I did have to put 2 counter sinks in the scales, one in each, for the fourth hidden pin.  It was a challenge peening that pin, had to semi assemble the knife leaving space between the first scale and first liner where one side of the 4th pin was already peened.  Slide it into the corner of the backside of the vise and then peened the other side of the 4th pin.  Then put the other scale on, pushed everything together, trimmed the rest of the pins and peened.  No other mods to scales or outer liners to sit flush.

One of the inner liners came from an alox model and one came from a cellidor model.

This was a great challenge.

It prompted me to modify my Pioneer X to fix the scissor ergonomics. Before the mod, the Pioneer X was a shelf queen, but now it might find its way into my EDC rotation.

The challenge taught me that an alox 93mm SAK paired with an Executive is a potent combination.
Current SAKs: Explorer, SwissChamp, Handyman (modded), Climber, Super Tinker, Tinker, Woodsman (modded), Electrician, Pioneer, SwissTool, Executive, Ambassador, Champion Plus

 :iagree:

I spent a portion of the challenge last year with a 93mm Alox and an Executive or Rambler/Rally.  What a solid combination.

Alternatively, I do also carry an Explorer or Swisschamp with Alox Minichamp.  Also great and highly capable combos.

If I didn’t end up using pliers so much I would probably just carry one of those combos.
