Handheld geiger counter? Recommendations?
on: June 06, 2024, 09:20:57 PM
Do anyone have experience with handheld geiger counters? Reliable measurement, low weight and as always inexpensive if possible. It doesn't need to be scientifically precise but enough to give fair warning if I'm sitting on a hot rock for my lunch break. :D

I am not at all qualified to give a recommendation, least of all because I never expected such a question would pop up. But I am suddenly very curious about them. I'll follow this thread with great interest!

Yes, I never thought I'd ask that either.  :D

There is an area I've been curious about for some years. I have avoided it due to a high concentration of usmurfium way down in the ground. Being down in the ground it is fine - while the radiation on the surface is 4 to 10 times more than normal it is certainly not an issue for a walkaround. After all people worked nearby for years back in the day. But there are rocks on the surface which have come up from below, and I'd certainly like to avoid any seriously radiating ones. Hence I've stayed away.

Now though I got this bright idea that instead of avoiding the area as such I might have a reliable enough geiger counter and just avoid any particular problematic rocks or stones instead. That seems to make sense to me.

This is gonna drive me nuts: what sort of rock component has a name that would cause the smurf inserter to go off?

A geiger counter is probably overdoing it.  You seriously should consider having a radon test done on your home.  Radon gas is really dangerous.  Not exactly a rare test here.  Might be worth checking on in Norway.  Best wishes.  G

Radon has been measured and is not an issue where I live. I think it is actually a requirement now to measure for everyone building new houses. Radon is an under communicated issue many places but serious checking for it started here in the 90s or so.

Fair enough, a geiger counter will likely be overdoing it most times. The question is what times and do I feel lucky? I would like to know if I'm lucky or not before anything can become an issue. Peace of mind and the feeling of some control and safety has value too.

That is the name of the rock that does not show up for people searching google for certain other rock locations.

Edit: Come to think of it this thread might not be the wisest. I'll do some edits.

Go over to Amazon and search it up.. Appears to be plenty of standalone portable LCD units that should do the trick. The days of the sterotypical 1950s counter are long gone,

Yes there are plenty. I was hoping someone here had some hands-on experience.

One made in a country where the manufacturer can be held responsible for achieving the stated technical specs will likely do its job just fine.

I hear you. I don't have any experience with newer models.
