Tromping around the Cretaceous period, the Talarurus thrives. Heavily armored, with a club on its tail it was built like a tank. That was 89 million years ago, but this tough thunder lizard still roams today. Enter the Talarurus, a new knife for 2024 from the folks at Vosteed. These guys normally name their products after modern animals, but seems the company is going way back, using dinos for inspiration. Oddly enough, their new Ankylo is really short for ankylosaurus which is in the same family as the Talarurus. Anyways, enough talk about dinosaurs let talk knives.
This guy's shape is reminiscent of the companies Dachshund model. Which is awesome because that model was a premium offering, and this knife gives people the same feel at a lower price. The Talarurus is built tough, cross-bar lock, micarta handles, thumb disk, and a modified sheepsfoot blade. The dimensions of this knife are an overall of 7.18", a 4.16" handle, with a 3.03" blade.
He's compact, but that size makes him easy to carry. The handle shape puts the knife forward in my hand, almost making it a three finger grip. There is a small area that can be used as a finger choil, but it's not as pronounced as some other models. As a result I don't think it's made for that, but can be used as such. The micarta is very nice, smooth with just enough texture to be grippy. Some companies put out micarta that has little hairs everywhere. Vosteed does this material well, it's a difference you can see and feel. Overall handle shape is very comfortable, making it feel natural with my thumb resting on the thumb disk. The crossbar lock is smooth, with just the right amount of tension out of the box. There is adjustment if someone wants the lock to be stronger or lighter, but I feel this tension is just right.
The modified sheepsfoot blade is the perfect shape for utility. There's just enough tip to make penetration easy, while the nearly flat belly is great for zipping through tough fiberous material. Cutting performance is really good thanks to the full flat grind. Sabre, hollow, and convex all have they're place. But I think flats offer The best compromise for everyday carry blades. The 14C28N steel is a perfect choice for this knife, and I'm glad Vosteed continues to use it on their budget offerings. This Sandvik steel is heralded by many to be a budget super steel. It performs excellent is terms of corrosion resistance, edge retention, and strength. It's field serviceable, and will go a fairly good distance before needing to be touched up.
This prehistoric blade is right at home in the 21st century. It's good looks, performance, and comfort make it a great choice for everyday carry. The folks at Vosteed continue to offer good designs at a price point many can afford. Hard to believe how far they've come from such humble beginnings. 2024 is shaping up to be a heck of a year.
