Mini Challenge #2

For Mini Challenge #2, on Wednesday July 10 please post a pic of any titanium, carbon fiber material or Damascus blade steel you may have.  It can be a knife, an MT or just about anything else.  Show your bling.  It could be the titanium scales on a Leatherman Charge TTi, some carbon fiber scales on a folder or a blingy knife with Damascus steel.  Or a fidget widget.  Anything goes.

If you don't have any titanium, carbon fiber or Damascus - no worries. It just means you are smarter than me with your credit card.  If that it the case, post a pic of an Opinel.  Opinels are awesome.

Don't have any titanium, carbon fiber, Damascus or an Opinel?  Well, you are screwed.  But that's okay.  A Challenge within a Challenge should be challenging.  Sos24/Sherry will have another Mini Challenge to be done on July 15, and unless she has changed her mind I believe it will be something that just about about anyone can do.

Day 8: the pliers in my EDC pack. I don't carry a plier-based multitool, I prefer separate tools. Sometimes I switch out the small Knipex radio pliers for a different Knipex that is my favorite all around pair of pliers. However they are 60 grams (2 oz) heavier. That makes difference in a 500g (17.5 oz) EDC pack! Gonna show them to you tomorrow.

That's a relief.  I granted the possum a reprieve and decided to turn him loose.  He (or possibly she) had a peculiar expression when I opened the cage door.  Wouldn't leave.  I tried to coax it out with a piece of bread.  No go.  Then I went to stage two.
Stage two was difficult as well.  Holding a cage upside down while shaking it as hard as you can took a lot more effort than I had planned on.  Finally the possum saw I was about to initiate stage three, and it turned loose and came out.  Without going into detail, stage three involved the river.  I think the critter was sad to see the end of the free meals.
Now to sort through all my carbon fiber and titanium stock.  There is still some carbon fiber scattered all around where I live from the failed Space X Dragon.  The officials put out an advisory to not touch anything.  It seems a farmer up in Saskatchewan or somewhere had some big pieces on his land.  The news got out and he was probably thinking of selling some of the scrap off when a U-Haul showed up with men in black with papers.  They tromped through his field and ferried away all of the pieces.  Probably acted like it was his fault.  Farmers always get it in the neck.  Best wishes.  G

possum

My only possum steaks are in the freezer, and I didn't think they would thaw by Wednesday.  So I went with titanium, carbon fiber, Damascus or Opinel instead.

Day 8

I'm more of a traditional pocket knife guy, but I saw a Benchmade Bugout at the exchange for a very low price, so I picked it up on a whim.  I loved the blade, but the handle seemed too flimsy to me.  I know that's the point, but I decided to replace it anyway.  I found a cool aluminum and micarta handle online and a matching backspacer on Amazon.  The knife is still very light, but it feels much more sturdy.

With it is a Streamlight MicroStream, a cheap flashlight that is pretty nice for the price, and a Gerber Dime.  The Dime would be a cool little multitool if it wasn't made so cheaply.

The oring on my Umnumzaan was deteriorating, and I probably should chance it when I get around to it.  I see you have swapped it to a blue, how's that going?  What's the right dimension for the oring replacement?

I'm not sure. I got it used and it came with a few different color orings. I think you can get them from the CRK website

Day Eight

Here are some knives from my dad, my granddad, my great granddad, and my wife's granddad.

Think all the Old Timers were my dad's he gave me a couple years ago. I regular carry the big one with toothpick and tweezers.
The Craftsman was my wife's granddad he gave me before he passed.
The auto ones my great granddad's had but he always carried a yellow handled Case stockman. Not sure where it went.

Titanium, I've never gotten into, but carbon fiber, Damascus or Opinel,  I got.

What gets me is the ability for some folks to be able to find good deals at flea markets, thrift stores and pawn shops.   Gary's flea market find reminded me that the Boss Lady wants me to do some work on some "salt boxes" for Christmas this year.  I figured it could be an excuse for buying a new toy tool.   Though his find cost less than the case I bought for mine, I got 20 diamond bits with my tool.

Day 8

Back with the daywalkers after nine night shifts.

Driving out on the Peak District (Derbyshire, UK) today.

I always favour a tool with a saw for these roads, as they are pretty overgrown and it occasionally comes in handy.

I'm rocking a Bugout today too.  You are right about the flimsy part.  I can push the scales almost completely together when the blade is deployed.  But even so, it seems plenty durable and is super lightweight.  Like all Benchmades, IMO it is too spendy for what you get though.

Just over a week into the challenge now, with lots of different sorts of tools and carry items.  I liked friend powernoodle's MTO Follow the Leader rules for July 10.  I dug out some items for Wednesday's post.  I think.  I think I have something that might qualify?
So Sos24 will be the Leader for the July 15 challenge?  Good choice.  I wonder if everyone will have to make some coffee outdoors?  I could go for that.  I'm sure she will have a better idea that I could ever come up with, whatever it is.
I wish friend Surge could go to a Kentish fair and spend a day helping to judge the stave making or pie tasting or something.  Sounds like he has his fill of rats and fleas.  I might mention that it is hard to slow down to country living.  Most find it hard to make the transition from high rise parking garages full of unlikeable people and fleas to geraniums on the front lawn and a wee veggie garden in back.  Sitting on your front porch with a cool drink.  Drives people wacky.
A shout out for the grand dad knife collection.  I think I would likely carry the same Old Timer that you do.  That Craftsman and the little Uncle Henry would have to find some pocket time as well.  I just got my first Old Timer in decades a couple of weeks ago.  It's a honey.
Best wishes to all.  Keep up the good work. G

Sometimes I'm just not with it.  I understood Dad's Vic and watch.  But I had to look up a dice pouch and County Comm dice.  Still not exactly clear on that.  I also had to look up the o-ring for a UUmmmaru knife.  I probably spelled that wrong.  I already knew what an Ulu knife was.  I used to have one.  I saw my taxidermist pal using what looked like one on a hide one day.  I said, "Is that an Ulu?"  He told me it was a kraut cutter he had sharpened.  Cabbage or deer hides, it worked well.  Maybe he was using it on a wild boar hide?  It has been a while.
No need to explain dice or o-rings for a knife to me.  Probably turn out to be another one of those things that I need but didn't know existed.  Giving the Cub another charge.  I have been charging the battery instead of buying a new one all summer.  A little hot for mowing, but what the smurf.  Best wishes.  G

It's hard to tell with the lighting, but that looks like the same handle that was originally on mine.  I bought it on sale at the base exchange for about $120, and I think it's worth that amount.  Looking online, it lists MSRP at $190... that seems high to me too, but it's hard to say in today's economy.  This weekend, I put gas in both my and my wife's car, drove both through the car wash, and brought home dinner and it cost more than $190.  I certainly wouldn't have bought the Bugout for $190, but that's mainly because I'm more of a traditional folder guy.  :tu:
