Regrind a blade
on: February 12, 2009, 05:23:03 AM
I have a Spydeco Para-Military that I adopted from the previous user and want the blade reground from a serrated blade to plain edge blade.

Who is "qualified" to do such a task that you can recommend from personal experience or know of through other contacts.

TIA
Why do I carry a 45 ?
Because they don't make a 46 !

Although i think i could do it i wouldn't recommend it.

Because of the amount of steel that has to be removed to do it properly, the blade would get much more narrow and as a result the edge would thicken quite a bit.
Because of the drag this induces the resulting knife wouldn't cut anywhere near as good as a real plain edge Paramilitary, so i think you would retire the blade very soon.

By the way, serrations are much more useful than most people give them credit for, not only for literal sawing action, but for push cutting (sometimes with a little wiggling) too.
For real tough chores i always use my full serrated Military.

I've done it, and it can be a real pain in the butt, plus it's difficult to keep the right contours of the blade.  I would also like to point out that by the time you ship the knife to someone to do it, pay them to do it and have it shipped back to you, you might as well have bought another one.

Just my two cents though...

Here is a picture of a Tom Krein regrind of a knife I just took in on a trade . It's the Spyderco Jess Horn with the red scales.
http://kreinknives.net/regrinds.htm  click on photos to enlarge them.

This is my second Jess Horn, one is original the second one had been a regrind ( shown ).

The difference lies in the fact that the Jess Horn was a plain edge model to begin with.
But since i'm nowhere near as good as mr.Krein, maybe he can pull it off, regrinding your serrated Para-Military to a plain edge model that is,

I was going to suggest Mr. Krein but I see you`ve already found him.
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.
