I have to laugh, because reading through this thread would have you believe Leatherman is missing an opportunity to turn their “outdoor tool”. Into an urban tool with just a few minor modifications.

 :iagree:   :like:

Which leads me to...

Day 7

Ok, I replaced the ferro rod, signal whistle, mini sharpener, and saw with something more useful to a non-camper.  One last tool remains... the one I hate most on multitools and one that I have never needed - the can opener   :ahhh   Looking at the can opener's spot, there isn't much room to work with.  Maybe I cab fit a mini driver in there

@Cypren: I suppose the Signal's bit driver is adequate for light-duty use. But I wouldn't try it out on GM air filter housings (and the Signal is not an "at-work" multi anyway).

@JonesE: I like the topo! But I'm afraid that if I get one, it'll be a safe queen.

@Sos24: what do I miss about Virginia? Sheetz.

@m47mu74nt: I like the red, and it seems that file mods are kinda popular.

@Juan El Boricua: looking good!

@Rich_SD: funny how that works out...a good can opener is a desirable feature for me.

Another great day, y'awl! :2tu:

Day 7

The carabiner strikes me as a rather odd inclusion. It's too small to ride well on a belt loop. I'd rather see it closed up and used as a generously sized lanyard hole. Or maybe I'm missing the point.

Like the orange background Juan.  :like: :like: :like:

Would like it if Leatherman would make an orange and black Signal. That would be awesome.

My wife would knock me to next Tuesday if I brought the multitool I just used to fix our irrigation system (or other random dirty job) into the kitchen to open a can.  :megaslap:

Yeah, I hate the multitool can opener, but I salute all of you that make use of that odd tool  :salute:

Don’t even get me start on multitool corkscrews

For the Signal carabiner, I think we’re supposed to clip that to our backpack strap  :dunno:

Does it still count for the challenge if we just replace every piece of the Signal one at a time until we have a Wave? Asking for a friend.

You and me both. Especially given how much functionality of the tool was sacrificed for its inclusion. Not just the inability to close the tool with the other handle's attachments extended, but the entire second handle's worth of fold-out tools. The only thing I can figure is that it's a throwaway inclusion because the compromises were already made to prioritize the striker surface, something they may well have considered a must-have for its intended use as a camping tool.

Day 7

I didn't use the tool for a whole lot today other than slicing open packages. (And indirectly, slicing open my thumb when it went skidding across the edge of a heat-sealed package I was cutting through; have I mentioned how much I hate heat-sealed packaging?) New toys in the mail today were mostly specialty electrician's tools for my project of wiring a bunch of new circuits in the basement and the garage over the next week.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The blade on my Signal is getting pretty dinged up and has visible notches in it from what I tend to think of as fairly light use over the past week. Not an auspicious sign, but at least I should get my sharpening tools tomorrow to touch it back up again.

The multitool of Theseus

That's a great point.  I like the form factor of the Signal - it's like a jumbo skeletool - so maybe the challenge for me is making it into something useful to myself.  Or I'm cheating

I'd love to see the Signal-Wave.

Larger Skeletool is exactly how I think of the Signal. Which is why I don't own one. The Skeletool is a clever way to cram a knife, pliers, and driver into a small package. The Signal is... half of a Wave? strapped to a Skeletool, with a couple outdoor goodies tossed in.

Day 8

I'm team pocket-carry, and I'm not liking the Signal's pocket clip.  It makes the tool stick out too far.

Here it is compared to my ARC:

Here it is next to my Curl:

...and next to my Skeletool.  The thing I like least about the Skeletool is how far it sticks out of my pocket, but it is still not far enough that I don't like carrying it.  The Signal feels like it sticks out too far... but maybe I'll get used to it by the end of the month.

@Rich_SD: Mrs. FX would have done the same. And I wouldn't have blamed her. As nasty as my ST300 has gotten, its can opener is unlikely to see use. And I don't much like rhe Signal's pocket clip, either.

@Cypren: I hate those damn clamshell packages. And good luck with the wiring!

@BPRoberts: I guess that's a fair enough assessment. The Signal, in my opinion, would benefit greatly if the hammer and carabiner were removed.

@m47mu74nt: I like the red and yellow! Probably I wouldn't go for the X-Acto blade holdermod, though.

Day 8

Anymore, dealing appropriately with a six-pack holder is an infrequent use for me. Rich mentioned that he likes black oxide with a little wear, so the can opener is awlso out in rhe photo (it's been getting a workout lately).

Day 8

I learned that the Signal's wire cutters aren't enough to cut through thin chain links. (At least, not with my grip strength, anyway.)

Oh well, it can still be used as a pull handle.

I have been following along, reading each post, enjoying every photo

And, I so glad that I did NOT yield to temptation and purchase a SIGNAL.  I will admit, I was so tempted to acquire a SIGNAL, yet, my first stumbling point was. Which color/combo color.

I liked the Aqua, Guava, and Topo.  And of course a sexy Coyote Tan.

But, still like the same 4.

However, missing the start of October, I then thought I would read and learn.   What I have learned, is the SIGNAL is a Skeletool on steroids with neat little additional gadgets.

And that the tool has gained some 3rd party options to modify the tool for a Suburban usefulness.

So at the point I admire each of you for utilizing this tool, and I’m pleased I did not order one.  As I know now it is not a tool I would appreciate with my current lifestyle in this final stretch.

Keep up the great pictures and utilization of your signals.

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Day 9

The Signal helped out on a project I have been putting off for the past couple of months. When my wife and I built our offices in the back yard, the contractor she hired installed dual pocket doors in the wall between her side and mine. Due to the way he installed the doors, when they were fully open you would have to fish the door out of the pocket. It was extremely irritating and I finally had enough of that that aggravation. So I pulled the doors out and fabricated a door stop that resides in the very back of the pocket. The final result is that when the door is now fully open it sticks out a half inch making the door that much easier to close. So excited this is now done. Now, I just need to find a quiet weekend to varnish the door.

@Juan El Boricua: coffee is of paramount importance! :tu:

@Cypren: I'm guessing those were a little more substantial than dog tag chain?

@Sos24: the Zippo but holder is a neat idea!

@LoopCutter: thank you for following along!

@JonesE: pocket doors are cool, but I can see how slipping too far into the pocket would be irritating.

Another great day, y'awl! :2tu:

Day 9

Testing the wire cutters seems to be a must when I take on a PB multi challenge. First I had to use the awl to strip the sheath off this piece of Romex.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Then I cut it. The hard wire notch worked a little better.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Could I undertake a wiring project with only a Signal? Probably. But I'd want a little help from a Squirt E4. :D

Setting up a tent and a poncho shelter.  Used the Signal to help with putting in the stakes.  Decided using the hammer end just to push the stake works better than trying to “hammer”.
