DAY 8

I have only three true stockman style folders, a case, a rough rider, and an original Sheffield (about 100 years old)

(Image removed from quote.)(Image removed from quote.)

The original Sheffield stockman is far more robust than the newer versions, and will most likely last 100 years more.....and all my knives get rotated and used.

Very nice TRIO of Stockmans.

Would like to learn more about the Sheffield! It appears stout and harty, it does😉

Scales bone or synthetic?

Good for you to rotate your three, I know that is difficult amongst the MTo crowd
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Who made your Sheffield Stockman? I have four Sheffield Stockman's and they're all thicker than the American Stockman's. I've got Joseph Rodgers, Needham Bros, William Rodgers and a Ibberson Stockman knives.

Using the awl to improve the draw through on my relaxation stick.
I've never heard it called that before! :like:

It's a 1987 Jeep YJ, funny little project car. Little bouncy for the trails, but it's fun. I'm currently debating what I want to do with it.
4.0L swap! If I planned on staying in Michigan, I'd be looking for a YJ with the 4.0L and a 5-speed that I could slap a fiberglass body on.

New sharp?

Opened a beer and a couple packages today.
Gingerbread stout? I must find some of that! :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh
More great stuff, y'awl! :2tu:

Day 8

More can opener action. Yes, I eat cherry pie filling straight from the can.

It's fine. Not amazing, but decent. They brew it in Baltimore, mostly, not Dublin. I bought it to make beer bread with, and just kind of grabbed a bottle without thinking too hard beyond, "Beer!" today.

Day 9
First package arrived. Used Bestman to open it impatiently on the roof of my car :)

There was some yellow box inside…

I left the unpacking for the office. There was my first Stockman.

It is nice small knife. I expected it to be larger. It will be great for the pocket.

I will cuddle with it once I come back home as I didn’t want my colleagues to think that I am a weirdo :)

30 Scouts in 30 Days: Day 9

So far, I've mostly been able to show off the good scouts. Favorite modern, best cheap and cheerful old school, etc. But you don't get 30 of the same pattern without a few stinkers, so here we go.

Uncle Henry used to be somewhere in the upper-mid range of Imp/Schrade's dizzying array of sub brands. Nicer than that Kamp King everyone had, but not as nice as a Diamond Edge. Now, they're just another one of the interchangeable junk lines from Nu-Schrade.

I've never been a big fan of "staglon", but I think the new stuff is even worse looking than the old. The tools have a "lovely" finish that reminds me of my dad's old screwdriver. Not quite mirror, not quite flat, just tastelessly in the middle.

Of course, all of that could be forgivable if the tools were actually decent. They're not. Out of the box, the action is rough and "grindy." The blade has a passable but not great edge.

It's rare to see such a stubby flat driver on a scout, and the lack of reach and leverage isn't doing anybody any favors. Likewise, the awl is more rounded than pointy. The can opener is probably the worst I've ever used, both small and unpointy. It takes a lot more work to take a bite out of a can than most others, and those bites have to be real tiny. My arm was sore by the time I was done opening the soup can in the back ground, and it took longer than it should have.

All this for ~$25, which is more than the asking for almost any modern mass production scout knife, or a good used classic one.
