Packing with detailed instructions. The box is made from cardboard sticked and stacked together.

I think this HMM Utility Knife is well designed and target towards more to the edc and craft market. The knife as well as the packaging are well executed. It is an art piece that will be appreciated.

Carrying on hand

Hope you enjoy this entry as much as I like this utility knife.

My favorite utility knife/box cutter for EDC is the Screw Pop.  Yeah, who knows where the name came from.  But its about as minimalist as one can get in this genre, and rides easily with the rest of your pocket toys.  It won't deploy in your pocket.  I prefer a carbide blade for long edge retention.  This thing gets used more than my EDC knife or MT blade.

Day 02
I would have thought there were more utility knives around the house, but this is all I've found so far. The Workpro is probably my favorite for all day carry because it is so light.  It also doesn't need a tool to change the blade, and has a liner lock like the black tool, but it doesn't have the line cutter notch.

I like the Workpro also  :tu:

Day 13 Friday

This was my carry at work yesterday. I have picked up a cold so moving pretty slow. That is why I didn’t get around to posting yesterday. I went home and straight to bed.

Day 14

Moving slow around the house today. Went to do some chores in the back yard and almost got blown away, so bagged that after a few minutes. I guess I will take it easy and drink some hot coffee.

I like seeing all of the older Stanley utility knives. Reminds me of when I started working with my dad 40 years ago.

Work has interferred with me contributing to this Challenge so far. But I do want to participant to the amount I can.

Here are my Fastback type utility knives:

The Fastback seemingly has been a hit for Milwaukee. I bought one a couple of years ago after several people I knew did so. However, my initial experience mirrored ReamerPunch's experience with Nextool products. The driver failed on my first attempt to use it
But I did buy it again a couple of months ago with the intent to use it during this Challenge.

I like it a lot. If this was the only tool I had on me, I could get a lot of work done.

Klein's version is both an upgrade and a slight misstep compared to the Fastback. As Cody pointed out earlier in the Challenge, the Klein locks at 135° and 180°. Also, it has a removable bit driver. However, the bit driver only accepts single end bits. And the bit driver rattles around in the holder, qhich I find irritating.

The Toughbuilt utility knife appears to be built tough. And heavy.

Unlike the Milwaukee and the Klein, the Toughbuilt bit driver swings out from the side. But it does lock in place while in use. And it has a prybar. Though it is billed as an electrician's utility knife, I think it would even work better for a handyman or painter, though its weight may be a deterent.
It was sold at one time at Lowe's, but I had to buy mine on Aliexpress.

Finally, we have the EDCFans utility knife, which can be found on Amazon:

I bought one 2 years ago and actually used it to install a dozen canless LED fixtures in a home. But it is decidely cheaper feeling than the other multi function utility knives I have. I gave away the first one and would not have bought this one except for this Challenge and the fact it was less than $10 due to a coupon.

I will try to share pics of my more electrician-centric utility knives when I get more free time.

@Adam I have that toughbuilt I like that one very much and paired it with a Knipex Cobra 125. Very capable that way. But the bit is 60mm instead of the usual 65mm.

@Adam5 I am right there with you with enjoying seeing all the Stanley utility knives. They sure do have a nostalgia factor. I remember my dad and grandpa using them. I went looking through the garage soon after the challenge started. I know I had a few Stanley’s kicking around, but I could only come up with old yeller. Thanks for adding your insight on the Klein utility knife. I have had my eye on that for over a year. One of the reasons I haven’t pulled the trigger yet is the off center bit driver. Based on your feedback and Cody it has moved down the list.

With the phone being at 14% battery life and me being tired (strong beer is a contributing factor), this will be but a brief post. But y'awl are doing great, I'm looking forward to more contributions from Adam, and go Navy!

Day 14

Today I used the EABs to open a bag of trail mix. The DeWalt blade cut the plastic easier and cleaner, so it gets the win.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

As the EABs lack bottle openers, they had to sit back and watch while I used the MiniChamp to open the beer.

This should be the utility cutter that I still own for longest time. I bought it when I was a teen looking for a hook blade for plastic sheet cutting, when I was into models. Come across this multi blade knife targeted exactly to model makers.

Straight edge (mounted wrong way )

It features 4 functioning blades. A straight edge, saw, hook blade and a chisel. It is made mainly from plastic. With the upper side of the rail/tip being metal. The slider is made from plastic as well. It is a flip and push design.

Tip, the metal is there for added strength for backing against the blade when large force is applied

The end cap can be removed to open the compartment for extra blades storage and for changing blade. Slide out the slider and the blade and function can be changed. The compartment is enough for storing all the blades not in use, but the blades rattles in it when used.

Straight blade, correctly mounted this time

All four blades and handles are made in Japan with Japan stamped. The hooked and straight blades are used most. And they have rusted a bit. The saw had a few use. And the chisel is never used. The straight edge was my main heavy duty blade used when I need a longer edge and snap off utility cutter will  snap from such uses. Like cutting boards and wires etc after I have moved out from my parents.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
Beside some other cutters and a tape measure for size comparison

Recently I tried to clean up some of the rust with 3 in 1 oils. I tried to sand off some of them when I was teen as well. I think the hooked and straight blades have higher carbon content from how much they rusted compared to the other two blades.

Too bad this and the replacement blades are no longer in production. This utility knife always has a special place in my mind, for some unknown reason. Or the reason is the blade and body are all well made Japanese goodness in that golden era I love in 1990s, in my happy carefree teenage days.

Day 14

Busy  day today especially with my sister-in-law's wedding but the EAB saw a bit of use today.

Opened up two Christmas gifts for the kiddos.  A rambler for daughter which will get personalized scales swapped on and an Armbar Drive for my son.

After that, I used the EAB to open up bags of ice at the wedding and I used it as a chisel to break up the ice chunks.  However, I failed to dry it off after using it as a chisel and the blade started to rust.  I normally resharpen these blades twice before thinking about swapping them out but the abuse I gave it today felt it warranted a new blade.  The Minichamp came to the EAB's aid.

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

Day 15

Still pretty much under the wather again today. I got the watchamacallit ST300 and a Dewalt utility knife with me as I putter slowly around the back yard. Living in the Pacific Norhwest, you have to take full advantage of when it is sunny to get anything done in the yard. I was able to fill up half a compost bin before I lost the energy to keep going.

Is that a micro bit? (small electronics size)

It's a stubby 1/4" hex. Not labeled, but I'm fairly sure it's a #2 Phillips and the flat is about 5mm.

Fireman, I've got something, too. Thought I had it mostly licked Friday, but it's come back pretty hard the last day or two. Hoping to push through to the holidays without taking a day off, but we'll see.

Day 15

My wife asked if I could sharpen scissors. I'd never done it before, but they're in the Sharpmaker book, so I gave it a shot. They are officially sharper than they started, so I guess I did alright (how do you test scissors sharpness?) Used the Lockdown to take them apart to clean and oil the pivot, they were kind of stiff when she gave them to me.

Mini review: The Lockdown Drive swaps the decent scissors for a redundant awl, and the weird, but capable, pry/opener/driver thing for a mediocre screwdriver. It is awlso slightly smaller. Overall, I'd give the edge to the Pry, but if you're really hard up for a 1/4" bit driver in this size of tool there aren't a ton of options.
