I've seen Multilights before, but I never realized it's just an MP400 handle with a light where it'd connect to the pliers and slightly different tools. The lock looks like the one they put on the 800, which I'm sure makes some sense to some engineer somewhere, but I'm curious why.

Day 8
Trowback Thursday that also has Three Layers (but isn't a SAK)
This is a '90s Toolclip Clone from TrueValue hardware stores. (And it is spot on except for the clip)
Someday I might splurge on a real one.
I used to be a lot of things, and someday will again.

Day 8:  Throwback Thursday

I think I have more throwback models than I do theee layer SAKs.  Some of these old models are also my favorites, like the Kick and Blast.  I should pick up a Fuse.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

It’s not perfect, but is a good compliment to a SAK.  I’ve added SOG wirestrippers and awl to mine.  I plan to swap in a serrated blade but haven’t gotten around to it.

Day 8: Throwback Thursday

We've seen a lot of four-layers here, but time for me to post my personal favorite. This models is officially referred to as an Angler, but our own El Corkscrew gave it the more evocative "Drunken Fisherman" nickname.

While the Angler was still in production until recently, this specific layout (CS, scissors/hook, no pliers or file) was only available for a few years in the early to mid 90s. Ask yourself how often you really need that woodsaw on the Huntsman, or can't make do the can opener driver. On the other hand, how often do you need to poke, prod, jimmy, or fork something? The fishscaler is the true gentleman's fourth layer tool. You'll be able to spear fruit from the party tray without getting your fingers sticky, pick the lock on the jammed office paper towel dispenser, and pick up that weird but cool thing on the floor. Or scale/measure a fish and disgorge hooks, if that's helpful to you.

:like: What model is it?

I "think" it's the Swiss Hiker but I can't find it in the wiki and my google-fu hasn't given me enough conclusive evidence.

Day 8 : Three Layer Thursday

This Security 14 was a nail breaker until I cleaned it up.  Most of the tools have their snap back except for the can opener and the main locking blade.  My usual tricks aren't doing as much as they normally do to alleviate that issue.  I'm going to continue to work those two and see if I can get some better snap out of them.

Day 9
Flashlight Friday

I started to write down Freaky Friday, but I think that's a movie?  I might have to see if Tubi has it.  The USPS stuffed someone else's package in my mailbox.  I couldn't figure out where the address was, so I looked on Google maps and saw it was the house only a couple of hundred feet from my mailbox.  There is no mailbox for that house, and I am not at all sure that anyone lives there.  Never see anybody.  Sometimes there is a little blue car parked by the house.  For weeks at a time it seems.  Then there is nothing.  Again for weeks at a time.  I haven't seen a person at that house since the blue car showed up a few years ago intermittently.  Box was for someone named Ms. Phoenix.
No way I am going up the steep driveway to that apparently deserted house.  Vampires?  Fortune telling wacko lady with an attack cat?  Used to be I would drive by and there would be a groundhog sitting on the porch.  What if Ms. Phoenix is some sort of mutated semi-groundhuman?  Is there a Mr. Phoenix who would shoot any intruder graveyard dead and experiment with the remains in a back room?
My mailbox was tipped over like a tired old man snoozing on his porch.  Someone had taken the time to kick the back of the mailbox so the pitiful battered remains were only hanging by one nail.  There weren't smart enough to open the mailbox to see if there was anything in it.  They could have had a package for someone who might or might not be named Ms. Phoenix.  Or might or might not be one of the undead.  So I am stuck with a mystery package and a mailbox that I will have to fiddle back together.  Tracking number says the box was shipped from Waxahachie, Texas and stopped in lots of places in between.  Supposed to come from a Walgreens in Valparaiso, Indiana.  I think I will try to mail it back again.  Instead of walking 200 feet and returning it by hand.
Probably wind up in my mailbox again.  If it is still standing.  Why couldn't Ms. Phoenix, whoever or whatever she or it is order something from Leatherman, or something?  Best wishes.  G

Be careful with this situation. May want to report it to the postmaster. I wouldn’t do anything with it without their written permission to protect yourself from implications. Have heard of people using vacant houses as addresses for shipping illicit materials. I could be totally wrong, but better safe than sorry.

I am a little surprised that anyone read all the detritus that I wrote.  It is a little unusual that someone would have something sent to a house with no mailbox.  And what sounds like a phony name.  That is the biggest reason I refuse to go up to the house.  I guess it is a trip to the post office later this morning.
I didn't mention that the Leatherman in my Day 9 photo is a Bolster.  Used to be a Costco edition.  The flashlight is an old Gerber.  Best wishes.  G

Took the parcel to the post office and left it there.  Brought along a hammer and wacked the mailbox a little straighter on the post.  I couldn't give any good info about Costco.  The Bolster used to be sold only there.  I think it cost $39 or something with a nylon sheath.  Later Leatherman listed it for $59 I think, and Walmart had it on their ads for $80 or so once upon a time.  It is sort of a hybrid of a Rev and a Wingman.  It was a pretty good multi for $39 and not too heavy.
Anybody want to bet that the parcel addressed to Ms. Phoenix doesn't wind up in my mailbox again?  I might be missing out on something.  She might be cute.  Vampires can be cute, right?  Best wishes.  G

Day 9: Four Layer/Flashlight Friday!

For four layer Friday I am carrying the EvoGrip S18. I am a fan of the evogrip scales. They switch things up and feel a little more premium than the plain cellidor. I also kind of like having a locking blade, after a mishap or two I have had closing slipjoints on the fingers. The scissors are good. Different than vic’s but stouter and more robust feeling. I don’t love the saw on this model. I feel like anything shorted than the saw on the 91mm becomes hard to use effectively.

For the flashlight, I am carrying my new EDC. The Thrunite Archer Pro S. I really like this light. I think it is hands down the best value for money EDC light I have come across. The only thing I would change about it would be adding a clicky switch instead of the hard one, making turbo the first mode (not requiring a double click), and momentary on/off. For the 20 dollars i bought it for however, it is a wonderful EDC light. It has a lot of what I really want. Tailswitch, deep carry clip with a J hook for your hat, moonlight mode, turbo mode, and different brightnesses in between. So far, battery life and reliability has been better than my Microstream. My Macrostream gave out on me a long time ago and my Microstream is getting a little finnicky and the battery doesn’t really last well. We will see how this one holds up to the test of time.

Costco and Leatherman (and I think Gerber once or twice) did exclusive models for a while. They were usually only a tool or two different from the main ones, so not a huge thing unless you're a big collector or it happens to perfectly align with what you want. The last time I saw it was the Bolster (which was going on two years ago). Last year they just did a bundle with a Skeletool and knife, and this year it seems like they're doing marked down Revs. They seem to drop sometime late spring or early summer, sometimes price them down around Christmas, and then clearance what's left out in the spring for the next round.

The individual tools were kind of neat, and usually good deals. I think I paid less for that Bolster (pretty sure Gary got it out of the surprise box) than the Rev's MSRP, and I prefer the Bolster/Sidekick arm (slightly different main blade and serrated blade) over the Rev arm (with package opener. That serrated blade is a great package opener, and also a fine small serrated blade.)

Day 9: Four Layer Friday

The 4 layer 111mm knives don't get enough love. The Outrider's scissor and Phillips layer is one of Vic's cleverer designs. Shame it doesn't fit in the 91 or 93mm frame, I'd gladly trade smaller scissors and no mag glass to get most of an Explorer and Huntsman in 4 layers.

Day 9
Flashlight Friday

This photo shows my three go-to flashlights. From left to right: Lumintop Nano Frog, Streamlight Stylus Pro, and Olight I1R2-EOS. In the photo, the Nano Frog (at least its 10180 battery) and I1R2-EOS are ready to charge. The Stylus Pro has no batteries to charge...just put in two fresh AAA cells. :D

As an aside, the photo shows the Nano Frog with a 10440 battery tube attached. While more powerful, it runs a little warm.

Day 9: Four Layer and Flashlight Friday

Huntsman and Olight I3T today.  Deciding whether to fill the oil tank or wait a couple more weeks hoping the price doesn’t increase.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The Huntsman is circa 2005 maybe earlier.  It is my first SAK… well technically it’s my little brother’s.  He got it new around that time and I came into possession of it a few years later. I seem to remember needing it for the woods and and borrowed it. Not really sure how it became “mine.”  I might owe him a SAK.  I remembered earlier today too that this was the only SAK I had for a trip to CO a decade ago.  I remember vaguely using it for a few campfire related things.  I wasn’t really aware of the world of SAKs and MTs back then.  It’s seen better days.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I carry this Olight everyday.  For $15 on sale from Amazon it’s the best every day torch I’ve ever had.  It’s been in my pocket to illuminate everything for about 2 years.  It’s been accidentally washed several times, dropped from the roof onto concrete, and thrown by a toddler in a tantrum.  Still works great.

What are the usual tricks? I have a couple Wengers that I don’t carry because the backsprings are so weak and they have little snap.

I'm not sure if the steps below will help with weak springs but, if the tools are pretty stuck, the steps below are what help me.

* Give it a bath in warm soapy water and scrub with a toothbrush.
* If you don't have a sonic cleaner you can skip this step but, I picked up a reasonably priced sonic cleaner last year and I use this as a second step. I'll put warmer water with a drop or two of dish soap in the sonic cleaner and the run the SAK through this solution at least twice, flipping it over at the second turn.
* Air dry it or dry it very well with towels and oil every single pivot point and work the tool back and forth.

If the above doesn't loosen the tools, I do these additional steps.

* If I suspect there's more debris or rust in the joint, I run it a few more times through the sonic cleaner, or give it another warm soapy bath, dry, and re-oil.  The oil in the pivot seems to lubricate the debris or rust enough to get more of it out during the bath.

If all the above hasn't helped the tools gain their snap back, my last resort is to work the tool perpendicular to the body of the SAK.  With extra oil in the pivots.  I would open the knife at a 90degree angle to the body of the SAK.  Hold the knife with a rag so you won't cut yourself and then rotate the body of the SAK back and forth like you're spinning a dowel.  You could rotate the tool instead if you find that easier.

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

With a steady step, the man walked up the steep paved driveway up to what looked like an uninhabited cottage.  Shutters hung brokenly from painted windows.  Grass was long and untended.  A general air of decay hung like an odor around the place.  A firm knock on the door brought no response.  A short wait and then another series of raps on the rattly door.  He turned a circle to view the rest of the surroundings.  Something behind his back said quietly, "Yes?"
The woman was a mass of wrinkles like a slept-on shirt.  Pale, unbelievably old, and yet the one word she spoke sounded like it came from a woman in her youth.  A little taken aback, the man spoke.  "Ms. Phoenix?"  She nodded.  He held out a small package.
"Thank you for bringing this, Mister....?"
"No need for thanks.  Sorry I can't stay and talk, but I am cooking pasta today.  With my own sauce.  Oregano.  Tomato paste.  A few spices.  That's why I have all this garlic strung around my neck.  Well, I have to go now.  Nice meeting you."
