I compared my OC Electricians side-by-side, and discovered one has a sharpened cap lifter and the other does not.

I wonder if one of our resident experts can tell us about the significance of this and when it was introduced/discontinued. It’s a cool feature.

It's a wire stripper, later replaced by the modern notch at the base of the cap lifter. I have a few of each, and I don't know which I prefer. The edge is a more aggressive stripper, but I don't love having a sharp on my screwdriver like that. Like most things, I don't know that you can easily find a "hard" cutoff date (working through old parts, etc.) but I think late 80s/early 90s. Best ref I know of is here.

DAY 16  Four Layer Friday

I bought a pair of Deluxe Climbers (built/modded IIRC) from a member here because I like four layer SAKs in general, and the combo of scissors/pliers specifically.   8)

Day 16: four layer/fixed blade Friday!

For four layer Friday I am carrying an Explorer. Nothing too special here, but I do think this is one of the best 91mm SAKs out there.

Since my four layer Friday carry is mostly unexciting, I also decided to show the Spyderco/Phil Wilson Sprig. These aren’t made anymore. I sometimes carry it when fishing, but haven’t in a while. It’s a game and fish knife mostly. I don’t think I would do any heavy woods style work with this it unless I really needed to.

Day16
Four Layer Friday
Since we seemed to have a sailing theme yesterday figured the 4layer Skipper was a good choice.

Never sail and when I am working with rope & cordage I prefer the Meyerco Sailor for it's simplicity and stout spike. Although short and stubby, I actually use the Trekker's Philips driver as a marlin spike regularly.
I used to be a lot of things, and someday will again.

Looks nice and light! How long is the blade?

More great stuff for today, y'awl! :2tu:

Fixed-Blade Friday

Something a little different: the Rough Ryder Spanish notch Bowie. It's more a novelty than a serious user, but it has shaved hair off my arm.

I would guess transitional model, but couldn't say for sure.

The real question is if we can get anyone with one of the 93mms with a needle/spike. Cool knives, but too rich for my blood.

Day 16: Four Layer

Rounding out our sailors, here's a Rangergrip Boatsman with all the uniqueish tools deployed.
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The handle has a surprisingly nice bit driver built in, and the pouch has storage with a flathead and a #3 phillips. I think I might swap in a #2. Even though that technically doubles up with the CO, I couldn't tell you the last time I needed a #3. Either way, bit driver locks up real nice. A lot of times this style is loose and hard to use, but not here.

Blade layer has a OHO partially serrated. Serrations are at the base, unlike most Vics. OHO isn't quite as smooth as the Trekker-style, but passable. Shield works the lock (or you can just move the liner like normal). CS on back.

Opener layer doesn't have the locking caplifter, I'm assuming due to lack of space for another liner lock. I think the design is a copy of the original Wenger, but the CO is Vic. I'm pretty sure the awl is the same as the 91mm version (sewing eye is rare on the larger Vics).

The marlin spike is similar to the one on the Skipper. Has a 4" ruler, which is nice.

The star of the show is the swing out pliers. Not as nice as a full PBMT, but better than any of the "regular" Vic or Wenger ones. Fixed a bathroom lock with them today at camp.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Despite being the size of a small boat (barely smaller than a Spirit in most dimensions) I do enjoy carrying this one. It's a solid toolset, and quirky enough to be fun.

Day 17
Sad SAK Saturday and....
Spartan Saturday

Might as well do both.  This is the enogural.... inaougeral... unaugerable....  I can't spell inaugural.  Anyway it is the first Sad SAK weekend.  I will also put in a Spartan.
I lost a knife this week.  The thing about it was, I knew where I had lost it.  That seldom happens.  While I was doing the search and turning the world upside down without unearthing the lost knife, I ran across something I had totally forgotten about.  It is an ancient adjustable wrench made by Barcalo.  That is the company that made the Barcalounger, many years later.  Anybody remember those?  This old fossil was probably made in the 30's.  I sprayed it with WD40 and gave it a good wire brushing.  It works about as well as ever and looks better now.  I must have bought the old thing at a yard sale decades ago.  Probably paid a dollar.  Best wishes.  G

I never realized how well SAKs hold up in general aside from the scales when I was looking for an example for this. This classic used to ride on my keychain. Still perfectly functional, just a little beat up. Not even that bad!

Day17
I'm stretching "Sportsman Saturday" a bit with this one, so it's a SuperTool Saturday too with the '98ST from before.

This is an Bargeon Sportsman (early50s ?? cant remember), just a nice vintage Sak'a'like from Fance. Same load out as a Vic Sportsman with aluminum scales.
There is little info on these around as Bargeon is most known for automatics/switchblades and all Ive found on the Sportsman models is a couple archived auction listings.
Searches will often spell correct to 'Bergeon', the watchmaker & jeweler tool company who worked with both Wenger & Victorinox for case opener knives.

Climber for refrence

Neat!

Day 17: Spartan

What better way to spend the weekend than by carrying a Weekended/Serrated Spartan? My wife said she wanted to try an MRE, so I popped down to the surplus store down the road from our campground and picked up a Menu 17: Elbow Macaroni in Tomato Sauce. While you can rip them open like an animal, the Weekender assisted with opening the various little pouches.

Honestly, surprisingly decent food. I had them a few times 15 years ago, and I think they've gotten a lot better.

* Macaroni was ehhh, about the same as Chef Boyardee or any other premade pasta stuff.
* Mango/peach applesauce was tasty, decent texture. I'd buy a jar of it and eat it in my house in a non-emergency scenario.
* Chocolate protein drink. Didn't dissolve as well as I'd have liked, but tasted better than any other protein drink I can recall trying. Should've made it with hot water I think.
* Salted peanuts. Too salty, but I say that about almost all salted peanuts, so that's a pass.
* Bread w/ peanut butter and jelly. Spreads were comparable to any ol' store bought peanut butter/jelly. Bread was fine.

Overall, not planning to integrate them into my diet regularly or anything, but would keep a couple in the cupboard for emergencies or maybe take on a trip when I was feeling lazy/wanted a novelty.

Day 17

Sportsman Saturday

Here’s my Sportsman.  Other than the addition of the mini-screwdriver, it is stock.

I carried it quite a bit during the Tween Challenge the other year.  Maybe it’s all the years of carrying a 91mm, but I just don’t feel comfortable carrying a 84mm SAK as my primary knife.

You could have done a lot worse. Honestly, if they were more cost-effective, I'd eat massive quantities of them (I'm trying like mad to regain weight I lost unintentionally).

Another great day, y'awl! :2tu:

Day 17
Sad SAK Saturday

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Tatty Rally makes another appearance. Here its combo tool is deployed, and it's seen with the little slip it lives in.

Day 18
Slipjoint Sunday!

I actually never heard the term 'slipjoint' until a few years ago.  Maybe it is more of a regional thing.  After I made my post yesterday when I said something about losing a knife, I realized that I didn't mention finding it.  I did find it.
This is an old Parker powder horn type.  I bought several of these things for $7 each new.  That was quite a few years ago.  I sold all of them but one.  Once upon a time there was a lot of action in Parker and Parker Frost knives.  I have owned a bunch of the things, but only have this one left.  Best wishes.  G
