Morakniv Eldris question
on: September 09, 2024, 06:40:17 PM
I'm thinking about purchasing a Mora Eldris for a variety of reasons, e.g. I love the value of Moras for the price point, I love the blade on the Kansbol and this is just a shorter version and I am slightly obsessed with Moras almost as much as Victorinox SAKs. My question, for those that have an Eldris is if you carry it as a neck knife and didn't purchase the retention strap kit (Which is almost 2/3 the $ of the knife itself) , what solution did you come up with to carry it around your neck, in the inverted position? I understand that the fit of the knife in the sheath feels quite secure, but I would rather have some kind of retention strap just in case. I don't want to pay for the official Mora solution, but I am comfortable crafting something on my own. Any ideas you have and of course, pictures, would be most welcome.

I slipped some paracord through the drain holes (in the right and out the left, as well as vice versa) and tied about four cobra weaves once I had the desired length. The requisite length of paracord would be less than $5 if you had to purchase it. I'd bet a fair few MTo members would have 4-5 feet just laying around. Unfortunately, I don't have any photos, as my Eldris went to a new home.

Farmer X's Eldris went to me, actually, and my carry solution was to belt carry it rather than neck carry.  Specifically, I found that the Eldris while still in its plastic sheath fits in any universal, tactical flashlight pouch so that's how I carry it.  I lost all my old pictures when my last computer died so, unfortunately, I can't oblige you at the moment with a picture.

I've never warmed up to the idea of neck carry. And if I did, the Eldris would not be my starting point. It's a chunky little bugger.
I would not worry much about retention though. It's almost a bit too stiff to be safe. Like you have to use so much force that when it breaks free it comes out so fast there will be a natural reflex to overcompensate and unintentionally hit something with the tip. It's not something an experienced knife user need to worry about, but this was something I only realized after gifting each of my twins a Mora Eldris as their first knives for their 6th birthday. I was a bit on edge the first times they used their knives, but after a while they figured out how to do it safely and no fingers were lost in the process.

I bought the knives with just the sheaths, thinking that we could make leather belt sheaths for them as a family project. Well, 6yrs is a maybe just a tad early to enjoy leatherwork so when I found the plastic belt adaptors on sale I just bought those as a quick solution. Kind of glad I did. Kids are now 12 and they still haven't adopted the habit of wearing a belt, and just put the knives in their pocket. They still love their Eldris and carry them more than their pocket optimized folding knives that they got a year or two later.

I can add this: the great thing about Mora's plastic sheaths is that they are truly ambidextrous.

As aicolainen says; the retention on the Eldris is, if anything, too strong.  Certainly no danger of it ever coming out without a very strong tug.  I've not carried mine as a neck knife routinely but a length of paracord is perfectly good enough, but I think I also tried a "ball chain" to good effect.  To avoid any accidents I think it's a good practice to lift the knife well away from the body before pulling it out.  It does have a habit of jumping free.

I bought my Eldris in 2017, I've necked carried it on a few camping trips with a simple piece of paracord. Never really came lose on me but I wasn't necessarily jumping and rolling with it.
Beyond firecraft I don't find much use for it.
My experience is ball chains break, just switched to a piece of paracord for my cold steel tac force II because broke the chain.
