Day 19

My wife and I decided that taking down and storing a 12 foot Christmas tree wasn't worth it. Besides, it's a great light source. We may get tired of it eventually, but for not we plan to just swap out some of the ornaments seasonally. Well and everyday tree needs some EDC...

My son remarked day before yesterday that he missed the glow of our Christmas tree.  We all agreed with him.   :(

Day 19

Switched over to the Buck Whittaker Summit 760.  I've only had it for a bit so this is the first time I've used it.  Did pretty good at sharpening the pencil  :D

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

Mail call from Saturday’s delivery, left unopened.

Day 20

This two-blade version of the 301 has micarta slabs, brass bolsters, and S30V steel.  The blades are also flat ground with long pulls.  It was the BOTM a couple of years ago.

I do wish Buck would offer Pro versions of the 301 and 303 as part of their regular lineup (as they do with some of their other models).

Grapefruit duty…
Those thumb studs do not allow fully penetrate the fruit. Can these be removed? I guess so. I don’t think I really need them as you can easily open the knife without them.

What's that texturing at the top of the blade? Is it just aesthetic, or functional?

Day 20

We got a little less than a Buck 110 worth of snow.

Yes, I read of users that removed the studs. They are press fitted and a  small pry tool should succeed.

But, on the other hand, full penetration of the blade cutting into a citric fruit could cause gunk to accumulate within the pivot, and be difficult to clean😉

The giant thumbstud is the biggest complaint I have about my 112 TRX. I've thought about removing it but haven't done it. On the other hand, the thumbstud on my 110 Slim Select was loose when I got it and it just fell out on its own a week or so ago. It took a bit to get used to it not being there but hasn't been a problem since. It isn't nearly as big as the TRX thumbstuds though

My technique is to go in half way from both sides. Not going past the thumb stud is a good guide to keep things clean.

Thumb studs can get in the way of sharpening sometimes, for whatever that’s worth.

Day 20:

Pulled out the Bucklite Bucktool because even though it's got problems due to the cracked pliers stop, it's still functional. Figure it'll become one of my beater tools until a better one comes along cheap. Honestly though, I like the mini one best due to the duckbill pliers without cutters.

Used it to slice open a new pack of water filters.

Since directly behind me is the Marklin stuff I pulled out of storage, as I recently discovered a fairly new hobby shop a couple towns over sells parts--that's a lot better than 2+ hours each way.

Surprised the prices on eBay have gone down considerably--I can get locomotives and rolling stock for half as much as it went for 4 years back. Getting ready to pick up a couple locomotives and a new wreck crane since mine's missing a few pieces.

Here's one of my favorite cars--advertising Spatenbrau out of Munich. I think Marklin has covered most of the breweries in Germany. Plans are to sell the Schering Plough cars I have off--best I can tell, the set my DRG Class 89 and most of my track came in was a drug promo in the '80s.

Aesthetically, this is why I like the ones made for certain export markets that remove the thumb studs for special blades featuring nail nicks--but the 110 and 112 Slim use standard 110 and 112 blades for once. Buck will occasionally sell them as web specials.   Plus, for me, not only does the removal of the studs make cutting easier, but also sharpening.

I can imagine that with 112’s smaller blade it can be even bigger problem. With longer 110 you can handle this bit better.

Sharpening of the knife is also good point.

I found after adopting a RED 112 Slim Select at Cabela’s about 6 or 7 years ago, that if the stud interferes with sharpening, I was making the grind edge to deep on the 420 HC steel and experience edge roll causing my edge to be ragged and noticed when cutting paper it was very noisy.  And, I had to use a stone more frequently.

I adjusted the angle, so the spine was more elevated, a less deep grind.  Then after stropping each side I had a much sharper blade. And minimal noise when slicing paper.   Also, a slice, that provided no pain when my skin rubbed ever so slightly against the blade. Only saw blood. No pain…

I then learned, even after a heavy day cutting cable casting or jacket casing, a stone was not required, only 9 or 10 passes against my leather belt on each side.

I also, learned that slicing through animal hides when processing caused more harm to my blade edges than the variety of man made materials ever did.

420HC and S35VN are my two favorite working blade steels that are the easiest to rejuvenate in the field.

It is all about the depth of the grind, 😉
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Being that I'm reducing my MTo'ing (for fear of becoming an enablee), I have done rather a poor job of keeping up with this challenge. But it's good to see the orange 112 being used and appreciated! :tu:
