I hope you can get in somehow, Gary. I spent the last couple days cleaning up a 303 that's been in the drawer for a while. It was in kind of rough shape, so it made a nice little project knife. I figure there'll be enough 110 variants floating around, I might as well show off something else. My "111" (a weird 110, not the fancy silver one) will probably make an appearance. Pics and storytime for both to come. Who knows what y'awl will convince me to pick up to go with them next month.

I've got a few spare Bantams, 325s and 327s that I'd be willing to send out free of charge so those Buck-less people can participate. Just might have to play catch up for the first few days depending on how quickly they go through the mail. Just let me know!

Only on MTO would you see an offer like that.  I hope friend Gra finds his toy so he can participate.  I think I will sit this one out.  I probably will have something or other to occupy my time in February.
Thinking back, I must have had a Buck fixed blade and/or a 110 at one point.  I know I had some stock knives.  After all, I did find the box for one when I did my Make-a-Buck project.  I either had a 110 or a similar Puma.  Maybe both.
That was a very kind offer from friend MTSAK.  Teacher and duck distributor.  I do appreciate the thought.  Best wishes.  Gary

So the hunt for the hartsook continues.......

But found this, it's not a buck, but if you squint it kind of looks like a Buck Colleague Knife

I have a little assortment of Buck made knives luring around.

I already have a few Buck badges, and also committed to the BOND challenge yet would love to share a picture a day.  I have Canoes, Stockmans, a Bird knife and a few 110 and 112s. Plus a couple 5xx models.

Will be fun 😊

Now to set a daily reminder🙄
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

I can't find my Buck Hartsook, I have put a request on Bushcraft UK for a cheap Buck knife to do the challenge, but no reply....

So unless by some miracle I find the wee knife, I'll be supporting on the sidelines...

I've been gazing longingly at some of the mid-sized lockbacks for a couple days. Unfortunately, the nearest place I could handle any of them in person is over an hour away. The 112 Ranger fits my general size preference pretty well (4ish handle, 3ish blade) but a lot of people are saying the 500 Duke pockets better, so I started looking at them, but then I saw a lot of recommendations for the 501 Prince.

In an effort not to buy a half dozen very similar knives chasing the "perfect" one, what do y'awl think?

It all depends!

The 112 is a great size, the original is intended for Sheath carry.  Yet, I found it fit nicely in my back pocket of jeans, laying horizontally and easy to extract.
Yet, the Slim Select version offers a pocket clip, is lighter and is much lighter.  I have maybe every color plus some specials. Usually $30.  Recommend the RED.   I also have a Micarta with coated blade that is a EDC.

The 500 is about same size, drop point blade, sheath carry as it arrives with a sheath included. I prefer a 112.

Now, the 501, is a pocket carry version, sized about the same as a large stockman.  It is very versatile. I even did custom with Sunset bone jigged handles for dress up.

Take a chance and order a Slim Select 112, nylon handle, and take for a test drive.

I personally find the slim series to be great in pocket, but too thin to be really comfortable in hand.

I was under the impression you were asking about the traditional Buck lock backs.  To review those:

110 Folding Hunter, 3 3/4” blade, 4 7/8” closed, 7.2 oz

112 Ranger, 3” blade 4 1/4” closed, 5.6 oz

500 Duke, 3” blade, 4.6 oz

501 Squire, 2 3/4” blade, 3 3/4” closed, 3.0 oz

503 Prince, 2 1/2” blade, 3 3/8” closed, 2.0 oz

055, 2 3/8” blade, 1.9 oz

505 Knight, 1 7/8” blade

Now, I don’t own all of those and YMMV, but I would have to say the 501 Squire would be my choice out of the group for general EDC.  It’s got enough blade to handle most common EDC tasks, but it carries nicely in pocket, without the weight and bulk of some of the larger knives in the series.

Top to bottom:  110 Folding Hunter, 501 Squire, 91mm SAK for scale, 055

I see you have gotten a lot of information from those with more knowledge than me on the various models.

I will just add that if you are wanting a traditional looking Buck folder and like the size of the 112, then despite it being heavy and no pocket clip, I do recommend the traditional wood and bolster 112.  But if not going traditional looks and still like the size the 112 slim is very pocketable for the size.

I personally find the slim series to be great in pocket, but too thin to be really comfortable in hand.

This is where the Slim Pro or Sport are nice; still light but a little thicker in the hand

Starting the challenge with this scalpel-sharp model 385, small toothpick.  If I had a watch pocket, the 385 would fit perfectly.

Day1

Happy new year to awl!

This Buck 442 is one of the oldest in my collection, and it’s an unusual one, I’m given to understand. It was discontinued in 2006 after at least a decade in production. It seems that there were three sizes and this is the middle one. I think they were simply named BuckLite and were simply lighter knives and not a counterpart of the usual series of lockback knives.

Either way, one thing that I always found peculiar was that this doesn’t have a nail nick. The only way to open it is to pinch the spine and pull it open. I read in one place that it was a purely cosmetic choice to avoid the groove where grimy bits could get stuck.

While I’ve had this for decades now, this is the knife that broke my streak with a Swiss Army knife   Just a couple of years ago I went camping and I shoved this in my pocket along with my usual SAK. At one point at night, as everyone was getting peckish and I was in charge of cooking over the fire I found myself using the Buck constantly. It was just easier to open, close, and to use without worrying that I was torquing it in the wrong direction or something.

I hate to admit that it was after that weekend that I bought a new folding knife for the first time in 20 years. Since then it’s been a random assortment of folding knives paired with a SAK, or almost exclusively since the Micra Challenge last year… a Micra.

So here’s the Buck that broke my streak

The 303 CADET is a popular slip joint in BUCK’s catalog.

The 301 and  303 are currently the only slip joints made in the USA.

The 303 pictured was made between  1972 and 1986 and suspected it was actually made for BUCK by Camillus by the format on the tang stamp and long pull.

You don’t see that on any slipjoint under $300 nowadays  >:(
