DAY 22

I have been looking hard at the Hartsook, and as a backup blade, I was wondering what it could be teamed up with, I am leaning towards a bark river ultra light Bushcrafter, but as photo candy, here it is next to the legendary Alan Wood Bushcrafter, my grail knife....and in my opinion better than the Rays Mears woodlore.

free photo upload

This Bushcrafter is perfection, in all but one area, needs to be a stainless steel...not a fan of 01 steel

Day 22

After all the whining about the Cadet, I decided to give the 301 "just" Stockman a try when I saw a decent deal on it. I love this size, roughly equivalent to Case's 47 pattern. I still think the spey is more of a modified drop point than a true spey, but you can at least see them going for it here. This one has a much nicer action than my old 303, or the one or two 301s I handled in shops. Not sure if you just have to get lucky with a good one or what. Case gives you a smidge longer blade, and I prefer their rounded bolsters, but Buck's blades are a little thicker. They awlso ship with a nicer edge. The Case is definitely better looking, but I think the Buck will hold up better. Overall, I'm still a PA boy at heart, but I'm going to enjoy putting this in my pocket.

Day 22

Busy day today for the Whittaker.  Between cutting open a new toilet, opening the bolt bag, and screwing down the seat, it did pretty good.  The flat Phillips did better than I expected but it still wouldn't be my goto.

Interesting. I'm a big case fan myself. Buuuut I'm a solid buck stockman person. (Although a Case 18 stockman is dear to my heart) With the Buck you get straight non-crimped blades each riding on their own spring, and it's just about the same thickness as a case stockman. And as lot of people dislike the relatively weak springs on the 301s but when your hands are wet or it's freezing cold, it's a lot less nerve-wracking to open then some other bear traps.

That being said, if I had to pick a slipjoint to carry, a Case 54 trapper is probably the one I'll reach for first.

Anyways...

Buck 112 helping with dinner to the charigin of my wife, really just slicing open the packaging, which always gets an eyeroll or an occasional "we have kitchen knives you know"

Here's the 388 and 385 with coffee.  I love these two.  They came as a pair in a WalMart Christmas gift set about 2016.  Buck also had these in brown and brass finished a couple of years before or after that, but I'm glad I got the black and silver colored set and not just because they perfectly match my Yeti cup and coffee.

I'm preparing a pork shoulder in the slow cooker, and I couldn't close the lid.  The Buck 140c Pak Lite Skinner was the perfect knife for cutting off the high corner of the roast that was in the way, because it is easily cleaned.

I still think the spey is more of a modified drop point than a true spey, but you can at least see them going for it here. I have enjoyed your perspective on the Stockman’s blade options between different models.  And you are correct the Spey blade is the most misunderstood blade out there IMHO.

I my first SPEY blade was on a Trapper pattern I bought because I liked the size and having two blades. I was 8 years old.  4 yrs later I found I could make money trapping and selling fur skins.  Muskrats and Rabbits were my target. And because I was under 18 no permit or licenses were required.  $2 for a Muskrat, $3 for a Rabbit.  No blemishes. No errant slices, and no bare patches.
I was shown why the SPEY BLADE was my best tool to complete the job.    The key to it s function was that end of the blade was not pointed, the rounder the better.

Now 50 years later I buy my first STOCKMAN, a CAMILLUS  model 66.  Oh! I like, 3 blades, 3 different blades.   The a Buck 301, wow just like my Camillus. (Then learned that 301 was made by Camillus.  Then I stumbled on to a CASE ‘18, California Clip for main blade🙄 and then found a CASE ‘47.

Then found STOCKMAN models varied, the Clip point is there usually blade height (depth) varied, the Wharncliffe, and the 3rd blade was the option.

CASE’s Spey blade have a definite point, Buck’s are less so,  and as my experience taught me no point is best.

But I am not selling skins, 🙄 I do not really need a Spey blade. But it does cut I find a use.

The STOCKMAN’s size is now important to me and like you the Buck 301 is just right, as is the CASE ‘47.  My two favorite currently made models.  As well as the CASE ‘75😜.

IMHO, today!  The SPEY blade can be what ever, a rounded tip, a drop point. A AWL, a sewing needle, a hoof pick or it can be absent.   My tastes in slip joints have changed from when I was 8 years old to today at 71.   Function and wow factor warms my heart, so sharpness of steel and color of scales, or just the simplicity of covers.
 Changes day by day.

A STOCKMAN is a great pattern regardless, as is the CANOE. The trapper, sod buster,  Texas toothpick, or others.

Enjoy!!!

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Day 23

Thanks BP.  Surgery went well.  Not the most invasive, but first time for cataracts.  Eyes and a scalpel can be worrisome.

Cutting open some hamburger which is easy for me, so I get to make some meals.  Wife is the “chef” and it is her eye.  2nd eye in 2 weeks.
