Day Twenty One of Buck

(Image removed from quote.)

Trying a new clip on my 112 but I misplaced the right size torx somewhere. Paired up with my handy SnapOn ratcheting driver.

I kept trying to decide between that one and the cheaper Williams/Case-New Holland versions, but ended up getting the Craftsman V-Series (a Facom rebrand) at Lowe's last fall. Still thinking I'll get one in a high-vis color. While pricier, the Snap-On versions are easier to get--right off the truck at a shop close-by--as opposed to special order/going online.

Day 23

Well, at the beginning of this challenge, I said to myself, “You have plenty of Buck knives.  You don’t need any new ones for this challenge.”

Clearly, I’ve failed to heed my own advice.

The 301 on package duty…

Day 22

Busy day today for the Whittaker.  Between cutting open a new toilet, opening the bolt bag, and screwing down the seat, it did pretty good.  The flat Phillips did better than I expected but it still wouldn't be my goto.

(Image removed from quote.)
Productive day
Day 22:
Opened a package containing a new set of MetonBoss scales for one of my Bugouts.

Sweet. MetonBoss does make some nice scales

I have enjoyed your perspective on the Stockman’s blade options between different models.  And you are correct the Spey blade is the most misunderstood blade out there IMHO.

I my first SPEY blade was on a Trapper pattern I bought because I liked the size and having two blades. I was 8 years old.  4 yrs later I found I could make money trapping and selling fur skins.  Muskrats and Rabbits were my target. And because I was under 18 no permit or licenses were required.  $2 for a Muskrat, $3 for a Rabbit.  No blemishes. No errant slices, and no bare patches.
I was shown why the SPEY BLADE was my best tool to complete the job.    The key to it s function was that end of the blade was not pointed, the rounder the better.

Now 50 years later I buy my first STOCKMAN, a CAMILLUS  model 66.  Oh! I like, 3 blades, 3 different blades.   The a Buck 301, wow just like my Camillus. (Then learned that 301 was made by Camillus.  Then I stumbled on to a CASE ‘18, California Clip for main blade🙄 and then found a CASE ‘47.

Then found STOCKMAN models varied, the Clip point is there usually blade height (depth) varied, the Wharncliffe, and the 3rd blade was the option.

CASE’s Spey blade have a definite point, Buck’s are less so,  and as my experience taught me no point is best.

But I am not selling skins, 🙄 I do not really need a Spey blade. But it does cut I find a use.

The STOCKMAN’s size is now important to me and like you the Buck 301 is just right, as is the CASE ‘47.  My two favorite currently made models.  As well as the CASE ‘75😜.

IMHO, today!  The SPEY blade can be what ever, a rounded tip, a drop point. A AWL, a sewing needle, a hoof pick or it can be absent.   My tastes in slip joints have changed from when I was 8 years old to today at 71.   Function and wow factor warms my heart, so sharpness of steel and color of scales, or just the simplicity of covers.
 Changes day by day.

A STOCKMAN is a great pattern regardless, as is the CANOE. The trapper, sod buster,  Texas toothpick, or others.

Enjoy!!!

Interesting
Day 23

Thanks BP.  Surgery went well.  Not the most invasive, but first time for cataracts.  Eyes and a scalpel can be worrisome.

Cutting open some hamburger which is easy for me, so I get to make some meals.  Wife is the “chef” and it is her eye.  2nd eye in 2 weeks.

Glad to hear the surgery went well

Buck 110, ALUMINUM

Likely one of the first light weight models that Buck offered.

2 questions.
What are the scales made of, and did they do a 112 in the same style?

Buck Challenge 2025
Day 23 of 30

A few days back I ordered a used Victorinox  "Hiker" off the big auction site, so I could participate in the March Hiker Challenge hosted by Farmer X. I got home yesterday to find it had arrived. Used the 112 to breach the packaging. To my surprise, this one is like new. Seems it was carried around a little bit, but never actually used. Happy indeed!

I do not think the 112 was offered in Aluminum.
I learned of the Aluminum 110 while involved with the first FOOLS OF APRIL challenge. And when I found one I snatched it up.

The handle material maybe G10, but I really cannot confirm.
I would expect Micarta to be heavier.
The tang stamp is 2017!

Thanks.
Great looking knife as a 110. My preference is for a 112 over the 110. Maybe just as well they didn't do one as it would only add to the list of unobtainable 112's that already torments me!  :D

Day 24

The contents of yesterday’s package:  a 110 Folding Hunter LT.

Thanks to the nylon handle, it weighs in at a reasonable-for-size 3.2 oz.  The texturing is a bit aggressive for my taste, but should provide a good grip, even when wet.

I also think there is a solid argument that this is one of the better values out there for a US-made folder.

Day 24

Just opening mail.

Has anyone else ever felt like they put a little too much thought into what they carry day to day to the point of not choosing anything at all?

I was very much a SAK guy until 3 years ago. Now I have a reasonably sized collection of folders.

This challenge has me reevaluating my carry yet again. I’ve been enjoying the Buck 112 in the pocket without using the clip. Modern folders all have clips as well as the chance of falling open in the pocket (they open much more easily)

Since I am wearing slacks today, I might have ordinarily carried a Victorinox Compact or Bantam.  But I carried my Buck per the challenge rules.  It got me thinking about which folder I would have carried, and I came up with the conclusion that I’d have left the house with nothing

I think one of the Buck knives that a few of you have, like the 303 would be good enough for a day like today

The Spey blade on the 388 is a great cigar clipper and is also my favorite pencil sharpener.

Looks like a sweet collection of useful Bucks.
I really need to get a new slim.  I gave away my old one.

I’m probably more in the LC, group, where if I start overthinking I end up carrying multiple.

I almost always have a SAK in the pocket, even if I decide to carry a traditional or another folder.  If I can’t decide which SAK, I’ve been known to carry 2+.

Day 24

Read some shot show articles and looked at Buck's new stuff in the catalog. 301 and 110 peeked to make sure they weren't about to be replaced. I like the new handles one the 301, but I prefer the "bolt cutter" shield to the anvil.

Curious to see how the Range series winds up. Buck Bugout?

I agree, hammer. Knife, bolt shield is a CLASSIC!  I have some Canoes with that shield.

I was surprised they expanded the 301 and 303 models with a variety of scales.   The anvil shield will match there packaging.

The two 301 Buck of the Months with just a clip and Wharncliffe have no shields.  Just long pulls and flat grinds.

Yet, the 301 size is a winner with me!

Interesting if I will be able to resist buying the new versions.
