Olitans T024
on: December 01, 2024, 11:26:08 PM
The Leatherman Garage Batch #3 "Parts" was a unique, limited-edition multitool that combined creativity with exclusivity. Using repurposed factory components, it introduced an interchangeable blade system in a minimalist design. But with less than a 1,000 units made, it quickly became unobtainable for most fans.

That’s where the Olitans T024 steps in. Inspired by the Batch #3 "Parts," it offers a fresh take while adding some upgrades of its own. Let’s dive into the details.

Handle and Design

The T024’s titanium alloy handle is a clear upgrade from the G10 used in Leatherman’s original design. Titanium brings durability and a premium feel, and the CNC-machined texture ensures a secure and comfortable grip. The handle is well-contoured, with an enhanced finger area that improves ergonomics.

The bright yellow backspacer nods to the original "Parts," but it’s polarizing—it might not suit everyone’s taste. However, the overall design strikes a good balance between form and function, with a clean, modern look.

Blade Options and System

The highlight of the T024 is its interchangeable blade system. It includes three blade styles—pointed, sheepsfoot, and serrated—allowing you to adapt to various tasks. Swapping blades is straightforward: a Torx tool is included for quick changes.

The blades are made of 9Cr18Mov steel, a budget-friendly option comparable to 440C. While it offers decent edge retention and corrosion resistance, it requires more frequent sharpening compared to higher-end steels. Still, for an EDC knife, the performance is solid, especially with the well-executed flat grinds that make slicing tasks a breeze.

Locking Mechanism and Clip

Olitans opted for a frame lock instead of an axis-style lock, and while it’s a departure from the original, the execution here is solid. The lock bar has a steel insert for durability, and it feels secure during use.

The deep-carry pocket clip is made of steel instead of titanium, and it works well in practice. It’s strong, doesn’t create hot spots, and is easily adjustable if bent. That said, a titanium option might have been a nice touch to match the handle.

Final Impressions

The Olitans T024 pays homage to the Leatherman Batch #3 "Parts" while standing on its own merits. It’s a capable, versatile knife with thoughtful design elements, a user-friendly blade system, and a comfortable titanium handle.

There’s room for improvement—the blade steel could be upgraded, and the yellow backspacer may not appeal to everyone—but for the price, the T024 is an impressive EDC knife. For those who missed the original "Parts" or are looking for a more accessible alternative, the T024 is worth a closer look.
