Do we have anyone in New Orleans here?
on: December 08, 2024, 05:04:58 PM
Megan and I have started planning our next trip and this time it looks like we may be going to New Orleans.

Other than the obvious (we will not be there for Mardi Gras), does anyone have any suggestions on what we need to see and/or do while there?

I can't suggest anything, having never been there myself. But I look forward to seeing your photos, wherever you decide to go!

And the Ruby Slipper.  Both are outstanding eating establishments.  Try the spicy, pickled green beans when you get the opportunity.  For the record, I don't really care for green beans but the spicy pickled ones were outstanding.

Do one of the tours.  The wife and I did  the haunted tour which included at stop at one of the oldest bars in New Orleans.  We had some purple drink that's supposed to be famous but I felt it was a bit to sweet for me.

Check out the St Louis Cathedral.  Regardless of your religious views, anyone can appreciate the architecture and history contained within that edifice.

Don't forget to walk down Bourbon street.

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

We will be staying in Tremé and not far from Bourbon Street.  I feel like that’s not negotiable- you didn’t really go to New Orleans if you don’t go down Bourbon Street, just like you’ve never been to Las Vegas if you didn’t do the Strip!

I'm not overly food adventurous, so I’ll probably stick to a variety of bacon cheeseburgers, but Megan is looking forward to eating all kinds of things!

As for the churches and architecture, I love both of those things.  While neither of us are overly religious we do love looking at churches and things- when we were in Greece a couple of years ago we drove for hours to spend a couple of days in Meteora where they have monasteries built on top of these amazing rock plinths.

And we saw some cool ones in San Francisco last year.

Louisiana and Halifax have a really cool history together.  A few hundred years ago the east coast of what would eventually become Canada was settled by the English and the French.  Eventually the English got the upper hand, and demanded that the French settlers renounce any ties to France, which they did and started to refer to themselves as Acadians.

Then, years later the English decided that wasn’t good enough, so they forcibly expelled the French from the area.  Since they had renounced France, they couldn’t go back (also, many generations removed by this point) so they went South and ended up in Louisiana.

Over the years the term Acadian got slurred/shortened into the term Cajun.

After the English lifted the Anti French ban, many came back to rejoin their family members who were able to escape being expelled, but even more stayed put because they were settled and Louisiana doesn’t have winter!

While the French heritage I have isn’t from Nova Scotia, I do feel  bit of a kinship with our Acadians (despite not understanding a word they say!) because I have lived well over half my life in this province with them.

That’s a huge appeal for me to go to New Orleans, if nothing else.

Look up a place called Coops. It's not far from Bourbon St and where locals go ( at least when I was there 15 years ago)..
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

Is this it?

If so, it's about a thirteen minute walk from where we are staying.  Probably a little longer than that for me as I walk slow, but I can work up an appetite!

My wife convinced me to go Emeril's restaurant.  A bit pricey compared to my usual haunts but man was the food outstanding.

Spent a lot of time in NO during my Best Buy days living in Houston.

Frenchman Street , garden district, Magazine street, Jean Layfett's bar, cemetery sightseeing, French Quarter, ride streetcar, Jackson Square .

Everything we did was spur of the moment. One minute you're downing a yard long drink called a hand grenade walking Bourbon Street, next your in a bar with questionable patrons .

100% worth the visit.

That's kind of how we tend to do it- plan a little bit, just for inspiration, then go and enjoy ourselves as we see fit.

On our last trip to San Francisco we had a bunch of stuff on our To Do list, and we did almost all of it.  None of it was set for a certain day/time (ie no tours booked etc) and we left lots of time for things we didn't anticipate- for example the Cable Car Museum, which was an absolute high point for me.  It didn't take long and it may have bored some folks, but I found it fascinating and they had a cool gift shop where we got a number of mandatory San Francisco type gifts, namely little cable car ornaments.

So basically, start with a list, check things off as they are convenient and we are able.

And if we miss stuff, we miss stuff.  There's always another trip....  :D

Despite the recent tragedy in New Orleans, our trip is still on track.  We will be on our way there in less than a week, and we are very much looking forward to the trip.  As I understand it, New Orleans is hurting from the incident, but it is business as usual in a city that has suffered a lot throughout history but keeps on going.

That's the spirit we are going with, and I am quite excited to see the city.  I have found a knife shop that isn't near us, but is near some other things we want to see, and it's actually very cool.  They specialize in kitchen knives but they also carry Opinel and Laguiole, and I am a sucker for those.

Interestingly enough, the owner is listed as a tenth generation Cajun, whose family went to New Orleans after being kicked out of Nova Scotia.  It should be worth a visit.   :D

If y'all have a rental car it's a small drive to see the beaches along hwy 90 towards Gulfport and Biloxi. Also Stennis Space Center is fairly close.

We aren’t planning to rent a car, in that we don’t have any plans to go anywhere else, but we may do it if the mood strikes us.   :tu:
