Day 4

Another comparison picture for the day. I saw a post on another forum today about how modern folders are so much bigger than their traditional counterparts. And it's kind of true. Here is a Copperhead from case, that's general a "fullsize" knife yet it's the same size as the "mini" griptilian. And massive compared to a "medium" jack knife.

Day 5

Chore day.  Hauling trash.  Washie closies.  I found myself in need of something to carry water and located a discarded bottle in the trash.  Too long to fit under the bathroom faucet.  Discarded bottle modification tool was handy.  EZ Out.  I started to make a plunge cut through the side of the tough plastic and found the knife's heart wasn't really in it.  Poked through and tried to cut.  Using way too much effort.  I stopped for a second and recalculated what was going on.  The plain edge is mainly on an up swoop and won't cut so well.  Tried to back out.  Plus, it is too far from your hand.  I foresaw a chance for an accidental IMR casualty.  Plunged the knife in further and surprisingly the serrated edge worked some better.  Still did a ragged, poor job of the bottle butchery.  It worked, but it wasn't efficient.  Any SAK would have done it better and without the angst of a potential blood letting.  Best wishes.  G

Day 5: When Opinel designed the Outdoor, it was meant as a mountain climbing knife, which is where the shackle key and the whistle come into play.  The instructors at this school carry them:

No mountain climbing for us today!  Just fixed breakfast.

No I don't believe.  I found this out while reading an article from Opinel a couple of years ago.

Day 5

Stuck with the 943SBK today. During lunch today, it helped me damasked the window in the kitchen I had painted the other day. It is hard to get into the corners and the pointy tip made it a breeze to peel up.

I noticed the size issue as well, and I'm a bit torn by it.  I can remember very well when 3.25 inches was the sweet spot for a folding knife for me, and when a Buck 110 was perfectly good for a camping knife at a whopping 3.75 inches.

Maybe years and years of carrying a SAK has changed my perspective, but now 3 inches of blade is my limit, and the Skeletool KBx is just fine at 2.6 inches.

This significantly limits the folders that suit my preference.  Perhaps thats a good thing for my wallet, but its somewhat boring for our hobby.  I wouldn't mind getting back to the 3.25 inch mark to expand my horizons, but it just doesn't suit me anymore

I really got into Opinel a few years back and read a lot on the different models.
I hope to get to the factory someday soon!

Day Five of Combo

Carried but only cut open a letter from the post. Spent the day on a sxs roaming the East Texas forests mapping right of ways.

This Delica size seems to fill in a lot of boxes. Good size, light, great clip, proven design that goes back a ways. I like it.  :tu:

Day 6

Gerber helped make some tuna sandwiches.  When I was a sprout, I wouldn't eat a sandwich unless it was cut diagonally.  I must have seen it on TV, or maybe one of my relatives did it that way.  I do remember a sandwich cut any other way didn't taste right.  There is however a Spam exemption.  Two slabs of Spam make a sandwich where small pieces fall out when they are cut diagonally.  Spam gets laid out on a piece of toast side by side.  Then you cut between them, so both Spams remain whole.  Mustard, of course.  Two slices of toast.  If you are in a hurry, a single slice of Spam can fit on one slice of bread, then you double it over so the Spam isn't naked.  That is called a 'doubley'.  Mustard is optional for that one.  Best wishes.  G

Had to open up a new pepper/grinder module too.  Gerber made the first cut, then it was mostly a peel job after that.  G

Day 6

I found a burr on the blade of the black scaled Trekker.  Some green compound and the strop fixed it after a few strokes.   Still learning about sharpening and stropping the “tapered” side of the serrations.

Really like seeing the wear to the black coating on the blade. I bet that blade could tell stories.

Not much action today. With any luck, the 943SBK will get a chance to free a new to me SOG paratool from the box later today. Mail has been running a little slow, so fingers crossed.
