Day Six of Combo

Carried the Skeletool today. Used the pliers to replace a fuse but not the blade .  ::)
I haven't carried the Skellie in a hot minute , may have to add to the rotations.

Day 7

Maybe you live somewhere without these type of briars.  The green thing that looks like a cable in the second photo.  They get 8 or 10 feet long maybe with tendrils that hold on to things.  Tough as a piece of wire almost.  Sometimes they have a leaf or two on them, sometimes they don't have any.  Little fine thorns on them.  I can cut them with my 108mm saw blade, but it isn't easy.  I decided to see if the Gerber could handle them.  Fail.  The serrated section looks a little like a saw, but it won't cut like one.  Trying to cut the green thing with the plain edge didn't work.
I did try the Opinel DIY wire cutting notches on it as well.  They did cut the thing in two, but I had to take three or four cuts to finally whittle it in half.  The deer actually eat these things.  The briars, not Opinels.  Don't ask me how.  I haven't decided whether to call the Opinel DIY a combo edge or not?  Anyone have ideas on that?  Best wishes.  G

I had the same thought Gary, decided the notches didn’t really count but I’m willing to be convinced otherwise :D

Day 7

Glam shot today on the deck in the backyard . It is sunny today with a high today of 37. The snow in the backyard is starting to melt. Only real use today for the 550SBK was to scrape some paint splatter the previous owners left me on the kitchen cabinets. I have only been looking at it while washing dishes over the past 18 years or so. Figured now was the time to take care of it.

.

Honestly I'll probably do this whole challenge this just the mini grip. I have other combo edge knives I just haven't been bothered to dig them out.

I noticed the size issue as well, and I'm a bit torn by it.  I can remember very well when 3.25 inches was the sweet spot for a folding knife for me, and when a Buck 110 was perfectly good for a camping knife at a whopping 3.75 inches.

Maybe years and years of carrying a SAK has changed my perspective, but now 3 inches of blade is my limit, and the Skeletool KBx is just fine at 2.6 inches.

This significantly limits the folders that suit my preference.  Perhaps thats a good thing for my wallet, but its somewhat boring for our hobby.  I wouldn't mind getting back to the 3.25 inch mark to expand my horizons, but it just doesn't suit me anymore

I missed your comment the other day. So I'll add a very delayed response.

I'm in a similar boat. I'd be more than happy with a SAK and it's sub 3 inch blade all day. I've lived in a wide range of places. From towns where a 6 inch fix blade on the belt wouldn't make anyone blink, to big cities where slicing your sandwich with an small opinel makes the people nervous. I hate to admit being influence by it, but living where people are more skittish just makes smaller knives more appealing, what's the point of carrying a huge blade if I can't use it without terrifying the neighborhood?

Of course, only the main clip point blade is fair game for this challenge…

Day Seven of Combo

Delica, Skeletool and a 2010 Soldier. The serrated edges are all very keen to slice. Would recommend these if looking for a good combo edge.
Carried the Delica today. Used to open up two twenty four packs of water for work.

Day 8

I gave the EZ Out another test on vine cutting.  Pretty standard stuff for a SAK with a saw.  I have come to the conclusion that the serrated edge on this Gerber is not a saw.  I cut some little vines.  Stuff about a quarter inch diameter were no particular problem.  Then I stepped up to the bigger stuff.  About an inch diameter.  I tried to rip it in two like a saw on a SAK.  Not even.  Then I went to the sawing technique.  Saw, saw, saw.  It wasn't worth the amount of effort I was putting in.  Fail.  After the end of all that, I felt the blade and touched it up with my carry along ceramic rod.  Several of the little jags on the serrated side had started to roll over.  Enough that you could feel them with a finger anyway.
I'm not really sure what this Gerber model is good for.  It feels sharp.  The plain edge slices paper quite well, although it is clumsy to use for that.  Normally if I test how well a blade cuts paper, I start the cut closer to the handle.  Not with this one.  The serrated edge doesn't like paper.  This particular EZ had never seen a sharpener.  Still had the factory edge.
Maybe some people carried these knives for possible self-defense.  It does look formidable and 'tactical', whatever that means.  Not my thing.  I would carry it if I didn't have any other knife at all.  Probably carry this thing for another week and then switch to something else.  Best wishes.  G

Now there’s a challenge!  :like:

Serrations are not the same configuration as saw teeth, and won’t work the same way.

The rule of thumb is: plain edge is for natural materials like wood and food whereas serrations are for synthetic materials like paracord or plastic zip ties.

If you were to cut paracord … The way that you would use this knife is - fold the length of paracord into a loop, get the heel of the blade at the first serration closest to your hand in the paracord. Then with one swift swipe, tear through the paracord so that the plain edge follows through to the end of the cut.

Try it out with any synthetic material like plastic packing material or tubing.  Let us know how it turns out!!
