MINI CHALLENGE DAY

Day 15

Swiss+Tech.  Orange bandana.  Sargent Tool, New Haven CT.  I bought it years ago to have a parallel jaw plier.  Had no idea what it was.  It is a sewing machine belt plier.  Cuts round drive belts for old fashioned machines.  Has a stop to allow a punch to make a hole in just the right spot.  Then the belt is fastened together by a metal staple looking thing.  Plier crimps it correctly as well.  Belts for these things were leather, but I think there are later synthetic ones.
Many companies made these sewing machines.  No electricity in US homes, so the machines were driven by a foot treadle which was linked to a flywheel.  The belts went from the flywheel to the machine head.  The same sorts of machines were easily converted to an electric motor in later years.  Sometimes the leather belts on these machines were fashioned into a loop without using the pliers.  I have seen belts that had been sewn together with stout thread.  Linen thread waxed with bees wax was common to use fixing shoes, horse tack, and other leather goods.  I have used it myself.
Just as a point of reference, the power pole in my front yard is one that was put there in 1948 when Nantahala Power brought electric service to the rural homes.  It has been tagged for replacement, but so far nothing.
Best wishes.  G

And a happy racky family chowing down on some date-expired pears.  In true Mama Racky behavior, the youngsters tried to sneak in for a snack, but Ma growled at them and kept them away until she had eaten some first.  Best wishes.  G

Day  15 + mini challenge

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

A rare railroad yard lantern. Orange lens, kerosene type.

Why or where used is unknown to me. This was part of my late father n law’s collection of anything and everything railroad.
My dear wife, was given an opportunity to pick any items from his collection before auction day and this is what she selected. It spoke to her.
This sits on my fire place mantle in his and her’s memory. 🥲

I have the orange criteria covered too!

Awl being tied together by the little pliers MT😀
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

I love that lantern Gordon!  I live about 40 minutes from a Pennsylvania Railroad town, Altoona.  It still has a lot of the shops from those days.  It's Norfolk Southern now.

Here's my orange!

Another day, another cigar.

It's warming up today and I'm waiting on a package, for the Boss Lady, to arrive.

In keeping up with the mini challenge I thought of being out some orange in my key fob and obsolete with my tea crate hammer.

Day 15

For today’s mini challenge, I pulled out the Klein MODBOX with the micro driver and bit kit. This is a handy little kit that gives you some security bits and specialty bits. For the obscure tool, I pulled out a drill adapter ( We use to call it a pork chop) that is used by airplane mechanics to drill out rivets in hard to get areas. It uses specialized drill bits that have a threaded end. It could also run threaded countersinks for flush rivets and fasteners.

What do you think, Barry?  Good enough entries for a mini-challenge?  I have thoroughly enjoyed the pix and explanations so far.  Nice job, people.  Best wishes.  Gary

Then, something orange, a wind turbine maintenance ship we saw on our way out of Sydney (Canada, not 'Stralia)

And, while I didn't bring any obscure hand tools on the trip, I did take a picture of some at a museum. Answer sheet to follow.

I think I have used or owned a lot of those tools, Bob.  Number 12 was a hard one to guess, but I finally decided it was a dead rat.  Not much of a tool, but entertaining when you tie one on a piece of string and swing it in circles.  Best wishes.  G

PS. On second thought, number 12 could be something to melt metal in.  Lead, or babbit for bearings?  Hmmm?  Could be a rat.  G

Day 15
Used the scissors to cut some shockcord the. pliers to tightened the knot

As far as orange, my water bottle has some orange designs on it.  I also was using some orange water flavoring.

As far as tool, I debated between a couple items, but decided to go with a Navy boatswain whistle.  It may not be something normally considered a tool, but it the hands of a good boatswain mate, it was a very effective communication device.

Very cool, the boatswain whistle.

Was this exact item issued to you, or this one that fell from the inventory cage?

I saw in a pawn shop may 6 years ago, was planning to purchase. But and gentlemen was standing next to me, had a Navy ball cap on, with a ship ID just standing there.  I think a minesweeper or transport in WWII.

Then after a few minutes, he asked “are you going to buy that there boatswain whistle, sir?”

I replied, “yes, it is the first one I have found!”

He shrugged and turned away walking.   I then asked, “do you have an interest in it?”

He stopped, turned around and said, “YES, I HAVE BEEN WANTING ONE FOR A WHILE!”
“Want to show my grand babies how I greeted visitors onto my ship when I was on duty in the war!”

“He LL”, I said “you can have this one then!  But, only if I can buy it for you! , and that is not a question to be discussed…”

( I already had my $ out for that item and a Couple of knives I found!)

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Just like Captain von Trapp used to call his children in The Sound of Music.  More nice pix from everyone.  I liked the big barge with the crane.  I saw something very similar lately.  Just not so big.  Same shape with a crane.  It was in a parking lot.  Big oversized load pulled by a truck.
I actually found an old crosscut saw like the one in Bob's museum photo a few years ago.  Just an inch or so was sticking up from the sod in my front yard near some boxwoods.  I had been mowing over top of it for years.  I kicked the thing, then decided to pull it up.  That is what it was.  Two man crosscut.  Handles had rotted away years ago.  Blade was rusty but still sound.  I showed it to a visitor and he pitched a fit over it.  So, I gave it to him.
Congrats to everyone for some interesting posts today.
Best wishes.  G

Day 15

Some really cool tools around here that I've never seen before.  Mine's not as uncommon but I like it.  It's a clicking hatchet that my dad used to use at the shoe factory to cut the leather.

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

Day 16

I got caught up reading all the posts from yesterday.  I put out a can of condensed chicken noodle soup in an empty ice cream carton for the varmints last night.  I think they snuck in and got it before dark.  They don't like green vegetables, but eat pretty much anything else.
I used to get some dog and cat trail camera videos, but not anymore.  The lady across the creek from me used to have about 20 cats.  I think the coyotes got every one of them.  I'm not sure what happened to the dogs.  Maybe the people who had them either moved away or something.
I noticed a dead tree fell partially into my side yard.  Not really in my way, but ugly none the less.  Assuming it doesn't rain today, I might go out and see if I can fix it up a little.
Thanks to all who helped out with the mini-challenge by their contributions.  I think Barry wants to make this a weekly thing, so someone will have to volunteer for next Friday.  I would suggest that whoever decides to lead the next mini-challenge should announce in sufficient time to allow the members to get their photo items in order.  At least a couple of days of lead time.  Hopefully my silly comments didn't anger anyone.  If they did, it really wasn't my intent.
Swiss+Tech at W-Mart.  I was going to look for the magnetizing/demagnetizing thing, but forgot.  Best wishes.  G

DAY 16:  One tool I want in MTs is the file, and I'm very picky about files.  For a small tool, the PS4 has a decent file.

Day 16
e
I started my robot vacuum to vacuum the family room, rushed over grabbed my small plier tool, slipped it in the pocket and drove over to RURAL kING for some supplies!

Found the gas can in sale, new pallet. Still wrapped in plastic, no problem !!! No knife ?!?!

Employee cut one free.    Scooped up the other items, coffee, Famous Dave’s pickles, jar of pears, weed killer, and double check coffee!

Inspected car, no mini tool.  At Home search garage floor.  Nope.  Kitchen nope, family room floor. Yep !!!

Missed the pocket 😱

Just got a roll of paracord in, today.
Supposed to be khaki but looks more like a light tan to me.   With all the other color variations I have on my bag I've given up on having it match.

I was wondering, Noodle.  Did you write Glock on the side of your holster, so anyone reading your post would know what they were looking at?  Or was it already written there so you would know which holster to grab?
I bet you recognized Fireman's 1911 front sight staking tool.  Best wishes.  G
