Day 8

I, too, have a Klein 32305HD. Which I suspect originated with Poncho. It was in Sos' GAW box the last time I had it, and iirc Poncho sent the box to me

I had some work to do on our patio and grabbed the 32305HD in case I needed a screwdriver:

Day 8:

Another new bit ratchet kit. 2 in as many days :ahhh

I decided I’m not a huge fan of the Wiha, the head is a bit wobbly and the direction lever is too big. At the same time I learned of the Icon bit ratchet kit from Harbor Freight.  At $40, it’s $10 more than the Wiha set, but has a locking flex head ratchet with a bit driver at the end of the handle. The long extension can also be used to make it a T-driver.

The case is plastic and a bit larger than the Wiha, but has a nice soft touch rubber coating (the black parts) and a nice spring loaded sliding latch.

It’s all made in Taiwan, and the ratchet is similar to many others. I’m guessing all these Taiwanese ones are made in the same factory.

Time will tell if this is a keeper. At $40, it is harder to justify.

Thanks for the list correction.

Great pics everyone.   :salute:

I asked ChatGTP Plus about the etymology of "ratchet", and here's what she said:

"Oh, you’re diving into some linguistic flavor today! Alright, let’s break it down.

The word "ratchet" has a layered etymology, depending on whether you’re talking about its mechanical origins or its slang evolution.

**Mechanical Origin**
The OG form of "ratchet" comes from the French word "rochet", meaning a notched wheel or cog. It ultimately traces back to the Old French roche (which meant "rock" or "cliff" and had that rugged, step-like imagery). The English adaptation of "ratchet" in the 1600s described a mechanism that allows movement in only one direction—think of a ratchet wrench or a gear system.

**Slang Evolution**
Fast forward to the early 2000s, and "ratchet" got a whole new life in African American Vernacular English (AAVE). It’s believed to have originated in Louisiana, particularly in Shreveport, where the term was popularized through hip-hop.

One strong theory is that "ratchet" is a phonetic variation of "wretched," which was often used in Southern Black English to describe someone messy, uncouth, or wild. It blew up in pop culture thanks to tracks like Lil’ Boosie’s "Ratchet" (2004), and later, viral hits like Beyoncé's "Bow Down", where she says, "I know when you were little girls, you dreamt of being in my world, don’t forget it, don’t forget it—respect that, bow down, b****es. I took some time to live my life, but don’t think I’m just his little wife, don’t get it twisted, get it twisted, this my s**t, bow down, b****es. I’m so ratchet.”

[Powernoodle's editorial note:  stay classy, Beyoncé!]

Over time, "ratchet" took on multiple meanings—sometimes negative (like being tacky or loud), but also positive in a reclaiming way, celebrating confidence, self-expression, and not giving a d@mn about societal expectations.

So, depending on the context, "ratchet" can mean anything from "trashy and messy" to "liberated and fierce."

Fascinating how words evolve, huh? Language is a ratchet mechanism itself—always moving forward, never going back. 🔥"

Learned 2 things today! I don’t think I’ve ever heard “ratchet” as slang. And I thought a rochet was what priests or bishops wear. I had to look that up and it is what a bishop wears over a cossack.

I forgot about this challenge and I’ve been using and carrying a few mini ratchets nearly every day. If I can get around to taking pics I’ll join and keep going late.

I was hoping to see the Chapman ratchet, the Vic set,
and the Leatherman ratchet here! My go to stand alone is that mini craftsman and it’s great.

Has the 711L made an appearance?

Tone mini ratchet. Same as the Wera except for the Kraftform handle. 20 bits, great extension, tiny package.

I would have reviewed the Icon set, but we don't have Harbor Freight here. Only harbour fright.  How long it the ratchet? My Rujoi flex head looks longer. I'd like to see a stubby flex head.

Day 9

Here are the Chapman sets I have.  The large box started as a smaller set with a smaller box.   As I added bits, I had to get a larger box.  The yellow set is an inch size allen set, the blue set is a metric size “bicycle” set.  The bicycle set came with the rubber band and toggle.

It’s about 4 11/32” or 110mm long. The head is about 35mm to the end of the pivot.

With 21mm bit (+0mm clearance) is still impossible to reach the adjustment screw for final tightening

ok with 16mm  :woohoo: (trying to justify the buying spree at day 0)

Work done (the bracket)

Also used the vessel 220 with leatherman ratchet to mount (no action shot)

Powernoodle Day 9

I used the Leatherman ratchet to change a dryer vent hose at a house we are slowing moving into.

This is the hose I removed, which was snaked back and forth behind the dryer and washing machine.  The actual distance between the dryer and the wall connection is about 3'.

It was company Christmas gift. I put it in my truck to have on hand when I do maintenance work at my daughter's home and then it passed from my mind  :dunno:
