I hope the raccoons in my neighborhood packed their things and shoved off. But I did post a cat photo in the Hiker Challenge yesterday.

I saw the cute kitty photo there.  Too bad you didn't post a pet photo on the MRE challenge.  There is a 1 point bonus for fotos of fuzzies.  I have my varmint snax and a camera outside tonight.  At least one skunk won't be getting a photo shoot.  I saw it lying hors de combat on the road below the farm as I did my Walmart trek this morning.  Didn't have to see it to know it was there.
Every time I see a certain woman downtown, she lights into me about the deer.  Too many deer.  Need to thin out some deer.  She almost hit a deer.  There were 10 yearlings in her yard at one time.  Like it is old IMR's duty to deal with the deer.  It is surprising how little I have to do with the deer population.  The deer are populating all by themselves.  Not one deer has ever sought my guidance or opinion on their population dynamics or family planning in any way.
Maybe I can roll out of the rack tomorrow and remember to make some coffee and eat a Pop Tart out of my home-brew MRE.  Might check for critter photos if I can remember it later.  Best wishes.  G

Good looking SAKs are two bonus points.  So far friend Dane is the only contestant with a bonus.  Best wishes.  G

Wait a minute now, I thought the GSMRE was supposed to contain all pre-packaged, shelf-stable foods.  Nobody said anything about hunting critters over a bait pile or adding relatively fresh roadkill to our cups of top ramen.  If those are within the rules, I think we need to know about it. :pok:  I myself ran over an iguana just last Wednesday, and it is probably still there.

Being in the UK, guess I am the first person to post on the eating day...

Breakfast - an oatmeal biscuit and coffee, had the added the wooden bushcraft mug to the kit, and the showcase of the Roxon spark (which was in the bag on day one, just forgot to state), which will be the user for the day, as plan to get the Seva stove out for the challenge....

More updates as the day progresses....

One for Gary....I found the little lady last night, she is going back into rotation  :woohoo:

Wishing you all good luck in today's testing of the gastronomical fitness of your GSMREs.  Having been unceremoniously robbed of a precious hour of sleep I am now on my way to work.  I think Tuesday is my most likely consumption day.

Last day.  Folger's instant coffee and a Pop Tart.  I remember well the little Bijou that friend Gra abused in the inaugural Classic challenge.  Still looks pretty good.  The titanium eating utensil looked very efficient.  You get two extra points for the SAK but missed out on another two points when you didn't bushcraft yourself a Felix Immler spoon from a branch.
I haven't tackled the Casio time adjustment yet.  Compooter and smurf phone reset themselves, of course.  Might check the trail camera for videos later.  Later, as in after the sun comes up and you can see the bobcats.  Best wishes.  G

11'ish tea / coffee break, have been in the garden clearing the Wendy house ahead of my soon to be 8 year olds party...

The wife and children are outside, so tea in the sun shine....

A good example of a correct temperature coffee

And the amazing little stove, these Svea 123 stoves are brilliant, I lost this one for a while, and have been looking for it....found it yesterday.

More critter pix.  No varmints were cooked in the making of these videos.  My trail cam is acting up.  Didn't turn on to see what particular masked culprit took away the snack material.  The Ray-O-Vac Alkaline batteries are likewise trash.  Power levels are down 25% after less than 48 hours.  Used to be good batteries.  Last for months.  Not anymore.  Garbage batteries may be causing the camera to act up.
I did get my old reliable ancient Casio reset.  Also, the one remaining wall clock in the house. Time for a critter pic.  I don't award myself points.  Just so you know.  Best wishes.  G

Nice, Gra_farmer. :like:

I also took the storm kitchen gas stove out in the lovely weather today to make the canned chili beans I chose for my MRE.

Since these quick-opening-things on cans are not to be trusted, the SAK came out to do the job. :D It also did the fire starting by the means of saw on ferro rod.
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The meal was surprisingly palatable. I will definitely buy these again to bring on camping trips and hikes. :tu:

Great job, gra_farmer and Dane! :like:

My alarm woke me at what I thought was 0600. I got out of bed, threw in a nicotine pouch, and plugged the router back in. After it powered up, I grabbed a phone and found...I was wrong! By then it was just after 0700. It was about as dark as a mineshaft outside. I've reset my "off-duty" G-Shock and the clock on the radio set, and will have to adjust the clock on the PC later. It's long past time for Daylight Savings Time to be banished to the annals of history. I'll spare you further ranting and get on with it...

Breakfast

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Sadly, I don't have a nifty little camp stove like gra_farmer's. But I do have an electric tea kettle. It was used to heat water for the oatmeal and coffee. Apparently one needs a little less water when using conventional methods rather than the microwave. The oatmeal was a tad too runny for my liking, and I didn't quite gag it all down. The rest of the meal was consumed without difficulty. Compared to what I usually eat for breakfast, it was positively decadent.

I should be having lunch around 1200.

Two more points to friend Dane for the SAK, and another point for the home-made cup.  I think friend Gra needs a point for his wooden cup as well.  I downloaded one of Felix Immler's books a while back.  It was a kiddie-level book.  Shows you which end of the knife to cut with.  There are lots of cute kid camping photos in it anyway.
I'm not sure why I haven't bought any oatmeal lately.  Seeing friend Farmer's breakfast reminded me of that.  Usual IMR breakfast is two fried eggs with cheese in them and a couple pieces of buttered toast.  I haven't had any eggs in about three months or so, since I refuse to give in to extortion.  I did have to open a bottle of water.  One cup of coffee just wasn't enough.  Best wishes.  G

Lunchtime....

The canned veg was the star of the show, and the sardines added once the veg was heated up.

For a snack I opened the sea and pepper crunch....very nice...but accounts for 1200 calories....ahhh

So I do a lot of cooking, most of the cooking....which is fine, so as you can see I am preparing dinner for the family...

It is meant to look like this....

In the first picture is my salt and pepper crunch...my dinner.  What you didn't see is that during my outdoor cooking at lunch, my wife asked for bacon, garlic mushrooms and eggs....*sob*

Lunch.
A little early for some folks, maybe.  I am trying to adjust to the miserable time change lag issue.  I never carried salt or pepper while fishing, but the Beanie Weenies could have stood both.  Gulped them down cold out of the can.  Vienna sausages were just like always.  I cracked open the bag of pork rinds and had a couple to kill the taste of the Beanie Weenies.
The water got a tube of the peach flavored powder.  Not a great lunch, but very portable.  An outdoor type jacket, waist pack, or fishing vest could hold all except the pork rinds maybe.  It did serve the purpose, and could have easily lasted in storage for a year.  Best wishes.  G

Some good choices for lunch, y'awl! :tu:

Lunch

Two things are worth noting here. The Tajín was used to improve the taste of the ramen. And the can of Vienna sausages is sealed by design. Chaos inevitably erupts when  the sound of a pull tab can opening is heard.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I ate nearly all of this meal. I got some help with the Vienna sausages.

Edit: I know Gary has mentioned Cheerwine previously (but in which thread, exactly, escapes me). I saw it in Kroger not too long ago, and was pleased to see that it's made with cane sugar instead of some artificial sweetener garbage.

Dinner

So the torment continues, for my loving family I have made a maple roasted parsnip, sweet chestnut, kale, goat cheese and almond loaf.  With sides of olive oil roasted on the vine tomatoes and garlic, with another side of maple and butter red cabbage, pear and cinnamon.

I mean just look at that.....

....my dinner.....

Looks like friend Farmer made a sweep of the points with a 2 point SAK appearance and a 1 point cute dog photo.  Tossing a snack to a dog like that is irresistible.  I took a photo of the pork rinds before I finished them off altogether and had another cup of instant.
Cheerwine is a NC thing.  I never saw it until I went to college.  All the guys from down east NC grew up with it.  It isn't wine.  Just a cherry flavored soda.  It had a cult following along with Charles Chips.  The snacks came in a big hat box looking tin.  You had to buy the tin.  A vendor would drive a route and refill the tins for everyone.  Everyone called it Charlie's Chips.  Best wishes.  G

The little classic has been used a lot today...just have not taken pictures.  Well I am wrapping the day up, and had a moment to put some material loops on my new gloves....the little classic needs it's scissors sharpened...

....as for the food, you can live on it, but looking at the food I have been preparing for the family has been a killer....the issue is that I am a very good cook, and the smells of the food prepared for the family has been torture

Thank you Gary, it's been fun...the calories consumed today equal....wait for it....

....2030 calories, it's that salt and pepper crunch, oh the deep fried goodness  :drink:

The canned fish and stock cubes are going in the get home bag, as they were the winner food item wise, for me at least.

I finished up with the tuna. It is a lot drier than canned tuna but easier to carry. Nice and flat. Doesn't need a can opener. I have tried several brands and flavors. With some crackers it would make a nice light meal. Not bad out of the pack.

I think I am done for the challenge. Didn't sleep much, so I might conk out early. Thanks to everyone who contributed. Still waiting for a couple of contestants. Best wishes. G :hatsoff:

Someone told me one time that Vienna sausages were the perfect outdoor food.  It was food and drink all in one.  Eat the weenies and drink the juice that's left over in the bottom of the can.  I disclaim all knowledge of the last part.  Not me.  Nuh uh.  Never gonna happen.  Yuck.  How could anybody do that?  Okay, I did it today.  It's sort of thick and very salty.  In case anyone wanted to know.  Just for future reference.  Best wishes.  G
