Tenable Model 6
on: January 27, 2025, 09:04:37 PM
The Tenable Model 6 is a budget-friendly rendition of its premium counterpart from Kansept, a knife beloved by the community for its performance and versatility. While the original Model 6 was a solid performer, I felt it had a few minor flaws that held it back from perfection. With this version, Tenable has addressed those concerns while introducing thoughtful upgrades that make it even more appealing.

For those unfamiliar with the Model 6, it was designed by Nick Swan, a retired law enforcement officer who knows the value of a reliable, functional knife. His philosophy is simple: a knife should be a tool, not a trophy. That practicality is evident in the Model 6, which blends utility and self-defense into one cohesive design.

Handle & Ergonomics

Micarta handles are a standout feature of this version. As someone who loves titanium, I’ve come to truly appreciate the tactile charm of micarta. It’s a material that evolves with use, taking on the oils of your hands and developing a unique, worn-in look over time—though a quick wash with soap can restore its original appearance. The texture reminds me of an old pair of denim jeans: soft yet reliable, providing excellent grip without being abrasive.

The handle design mirrors the Kansept version with a simple but effective ergonomic profile. A generously sized finger groove locks your grip in place, while the gentle arc of the handle conforms naturally to your palm. This level of comfort allows for extended use without fatigue. A particularly nice touch is the lanyard backspacer, which is both functional and stylish, adding a subtle pop of color to the design.

Locking Mechanism

The Model 6 uses a cross-bar lock, which I find to be a significant upgrade over a traditional liner lock. Cross-bar locks are ambidextrous, allowing for easy one-handed operation—an invaluable feature when your other hand is occupied. The tension on this lock is perfectly dialed in, making it easy to disengage with just your thumb. With the patent on Benchmade’s Axis lock expired, it’s great to see this mechanism being adopted so widely, and Tenable has executed it flawlessly here.

Blade Performance

The blade is a modified sheepfoot design, arguably one of the best shapes for general utility. Its low tip is perfect for precise cuts and scoring, while the flat grind ensures efficient slicing performance. The 14C28N steel strikes an excellent balance for a budget knife, offering solid edge retention, corrosion resistance, and ease of sharpening.

One of my biggest gripes with the Kansept version was the deployment mechanism. Its thumb hole was too small, often requiring me to rely on the rear flipper for opening. Tenable has fixed this by incorporating dual thumb studs with a textured ramp. These changes make deployment much smoother and more reliable, eliminating the frustrations of the original design. While I typically prefer thumb holes over studs, the added functionality here is undeniable.

Final Thoughts

The Tenable Model 6 is a shining example of how minor tweaks and thoughtful upgrades can elevate an already great design. By addressing the issues of the premium version and introducing practical enhancements, this budget-friendly knife offers incredible value without sacrificing quality.

With its comfortable handle, reliable cross-bar lock, and versatile blade, the Model 6 is an excellent choice for everyday carry. Whether you need a dependable tool for daily tasks or a knife that’s ready for anything, the Tenable Model 6 is well worth considering.
