Cowboy Club
on: February 11, 2025, 12:56:48 PM
It seems there isn't any club for the simple, but great Vic Cowboy? Isn't that a shame? :dunno:

Perhaps there aren't that many of them out there? I don't know. It being discontinued for a while and all. And perhaps it always had quite a limited appeal and audience to begin with? It certainly isn't one of the most discussed models on the forum, thats for sure.

Nevertheless, it has quickly turned into my favorite SAK, since I got a vintage one not long ago. I tend to reach for it much more often than any of my other ones. Both when I'm heading out or when I need it to take care of small tasks around the house.

Since I mainly use my SAK's for blade purposes anyway, I tend to not miss many other tools when out and about. I rather much prefer the slim profile and lower weight over excess tools. I do use the few other tools the Cowboy has to offer though. In fact I find the selection rather complete for what I tend to need.

The tweezers are always nice to have. I use them mainly for splinters from whittling and for removal of the occasional tick. I've given up on the eyebrows. They grow wild now. :ahhh
I very rarely use the Phillips driver as intended, but I use it all the time as a marlin spike when doing rope work. Works great.

I've really come to appreciate the 111 mm SAK's for their ergonomic handle and size, which is just close to perfect in my opinion. Not too long, not to short. They fit and handle great in the hand.

I find the Cowboy ideal for pocket carry. Since it's so slim and light, I totally forget about it until I need it. I wear jeans every day and the Cowboy sits neatly in my front pocket, where it is close to unnoticeable to any outsider, unless they choose to intensely eyeball my groinal area at close range, which unfortunately happens very rarely. ::)

The main uses for my SAK's are whittling with food preparation coming in as the runner up. The Cowboy handles both easily and with an attitude.

Does anyone else appreciate the simple Cowboy? And for what reasons?

Nice whittling Dane!  You're right, definitely no club for it prior to this one.

Nice pictures!  I like the Cowboy.  I had an old one with the slot in the Phillips for opening tins.  I sold it years back and regretted it!  It was hard to find a replacement at a decent price, they do seem a little scarce.

For whatever reason they seemed to disappear.  They're definitely hard to come across.

That one of yours appears to be in great condition Dane.   Just wait, we have some older SAK collectors here.

It is as new. I don't think the previous owner ever used it.  :dunno: It's even one of the older versions, as far as I can tell from SAKwiki? It has the regular Philips driver without the can opener, and "Patented" printed on the blade.

Hope to see a few more Cowboys. :D I agree, Barry, that there must be some hiding in some of the amazing collections around here.

I've got the Hunter and looking to expand. Sadly that one doesn't match my needs any more so doesn't really get much carry time any more

I've babied this one since I got it Styx.  It's in incredible condition and I don't want to mess up the military markings on it.

I agree. I also really like this lock. I only have the Cowboy and a Workchamp with this type, and I use them all the time. The 111 mm's are really growing on me.

A model with the same toolset as the Adventurer, but with the side lock, was issued to the Danish military at one point and is often sold second hand here. I don't know, if this was called Adventurer back then also? I'm considering adding one of these to the lineup, when I find a good one.

There is a Danish Army knife thread in the SAK section, but I've not seen it in awhile.
I like the 111's too.  I always called them the SAK of the 21st century.

Thanks for starting up the club Dane
Great to hear your enthusiasm for the Cowboy.....
And amazing whittling!!!   :tu: :tu: :tu:

Looks like  RP added it to the SAK Clubs stickie - So that is great    :salute:

I love the 111mm too - But I am a scissors guy - So the Outrider is my favourite
But as you mention it is a bit bulky.

I keep meaning to start a thread about how Vic seems biased against the backspring Phillips!    :pok:   :(
Cowboy, Adventurer/Centurion, Craftsman, Master Craftsman .......

Thanks Huntsman.

I hadn't noticed that the Cowboy had been included on the official SAK clubs list. That's so cool. :ahhh Thanks for mentioning that. :)

I totally agree about the scissors. They are simply just great and one of the most useful tools on a SAK if you ask me.

Is the Outrider so bad when it comes to bulkyness? I'm starting to get used to the Workchamp, and that just about crosses the line of actually being too big for pocket carry for my comfort. I definitely won't carry anything like the Outrider or Workchamp day-to-day, but when out in the woods, for sure, always. :) Day-to-day something considerably smaller and simpler is all I need.

I agree on the backspring Philips, Huntsman. I do think the backspring driver mostly work fine for marlin spike purposes though. What bothers me a bit more is the backspring awl. This is a tool I use way more often on my other SAK's when whittling, and though the backspring version is still extremely useful, I can't help to wonder if an inline version would offer better control? I also rekon that the added length will be helpful? Sometimes the handle of the SAK stumps into my project when using the awl on something with a bit of "dept". I can't help but to think, that an inline awl would give me the possibility to make deeper holes and access harder-to-reach spots on my projects. Since I've yet to have a SAK with an inline awl, I can't say I know for sure, but I think I would prefer the grip and handling of an inline awl when whittling and doing woodcraft.

For that reason, an Alox with an inline awl is my planned next purchase when I'm visiting a Vic store shortly. I just can't seem to agree with myself which Alox it will be though? :dunno:
I'm leaning towards the Harvester at the moment, since the small pruner blade on this could be interesting for whittling. But I'm also considering Farmer X or Pioneer X, for the scissors obviously, perhaps combined with an Alox 2, which also has the pruner blade. Then I can have both scissors and pruner blade. I'll probably only be able to decide when I'm at the store where I can hold them in my hands. :)

It's on Page 8, second from the top, of available awards under "your profile". It's officially the "Discontinued and SAK/Multitool" challenge.

Thanks Barry. Didn't know how that worked. I had only read about the 30 day challenges. That sounds so much fun. Will definitely do that.

I get why there aren't too many of them out there. I guess it is a rather strange set-up? A backside Philips on a 111 mm is perhaps not the most sought after tool on a SAK, and when it is one of only a few save the blade, I get, that the demand for such a knife is limited. I'm obviously very pleased with mine though. A 111 mm so slim and light is a pleasure to carry and use.

It's actually fine for me TBH.
Although it does depend on the trousers  ..... Jeans and working or hiking shorts are fine.
Would not want to carry in suit/office work trousers and maybe not even chinos

..... What bothers me a bit more is the backspring awl  ..... I can't help to wonder if an inline version would offer better control? I also reckon that the added length will be helpful? ....  an inline awl would give me the possibility to make deeper holes and access harder-to-reach spots on my projects .... but I think I would prefer the grip and handling of an inline awl when whittling and doing woodcraft.

I am a big fan of the back-spring awl and its probably my third most used tool after scissors and big blade.
I use it mainly for pilot holes when drilling +++  or to make a complete hole in something.

However, you are going to love the inline awl, and as you say it will be much better suited for your uses.
Good luck with the Alox decision  .... And you know what we say here at MTo?   ???   Buy them awl!!      :o

Mine too, in that order.  On the ones with sewing eyes my wife can sew with the awl, and crochet with the hook.

Pioneer Harvester/Swiss Army 7 is a brilliant woods/whittling SAK.  Main blade, pruning blade, saw, and inline awl all come in handy.  Thick enough to get a good grip on, but not so thick or heavy as to be awkward to use or carry.  Smooth back springs and no key ring make it very comfortable in hand.

Add a Classic or even better, a Rambler, and you’ll be covered for scissors, plus a few bonus tools.
