The Almighty Paperclip
on: March 16, 2025, 04:45:24 PM
Reading through the MacGyver Challenge thread, I got to thinking about the almighty paperclip.

1. Who carries one daily?
2. What size / style?
3. How do you carry?
4. Have you had to deploy in an EDC scenario?

And sure, why not, poat picss too!

I have been carrying a clip for some time.  I am not sure how long.  It stays inside a little oval change carrier.  I keep a few coins, two spare keys, and a couple of safety pins.
I did use a paper clip I was carrying several times at the local public library.  It came in handy to release stuck DVD drives.  I showed their tech how to do it.  He was surprised.  I saw a lady take her newly acquired library card and slide it in a floppy disc slot.... ?.  Thought that was how she was supposed to log in.  I might have had to help with that one.  I don't remember.  Floppies are a thing of the past now.  Not remembered with affection, either.
I will say that the safety pins are likely more useful than a paper clip.  I emptied my little change pouch and found the paper clip was still in there.  A green one.  Best wishes.  G

I learned how to pick some locks with paper clips when I worked in the penitentiary.

So Ozark, are you going to finally take the MacGyver challenge?  Still time to sign up.  Might not ever do this one again.  If you still want a picture of my paperclip, I can oblige.  Let me know.  Best wishes.  Gary

Im not sure if I qualify. I dont carry duct tape and I only have 58mm SAK's and a Bantam (and of course paperclip). I know that wouldn't stop MacGyver, but I should at least upgrade my SAK optiona first. But maybe I could enter with a minichamp and paperclip only.

Carrying duct tape is a snap.  All you do is take an old plastic card (ID, old bank card, or membership card) and wrap a couple of turns of duct tape around it.  Friend Marlowe carries it every day already.  Some others do too.  Nobody will be carrying a whole roll of duct tape.  Although it would be easy with a pack.
A big part of a challenge is figuring out how to make something work.  Not always simple.  It is supposed to be a challenge, after all.  That's why we don't have a badge for 30 day cookie eating.  Or a 30 day get out of bed challenge.  Give it some thought.  The hardest part of a challenge is making the daily post and photo.  I have found that carrying the SAK or multi or whatever is the easy part.  Can't give up before you start.  Best wishes.  G

30 day cookie eating.  Or a 30 day get out of bed challenge.

The first one is much easier than the second one.

We do not discriminate. Any SAK qualifies, and for this challenge, any kind of adhesive tape is ok too. Roll a little tape around an old card like Gary said, or around a lollipop stick or something, and you're good to go. :tu:

I decided to go for it. I posted on the MacGyver Challenge thread. I am probably going to go with the minichamp. I am probably ordering a compact soon. If I do, and it arribes in time, the compact will be my official entry. And, I have already started carrying duct tape with my paperclip. I should be all set.
