We were on the Combo Edge challenge together, right?  That was fun.  Seems like an eternity ago.  Best wishes.  G
 :D

Yes, I did the challenge earlier this year. I agree that was fun. This year sure seems to be flying by.

Nice Spydie.  I had an Endura for about 5 minutes once.  It had the stainless steel scales.  I chased the guy down in a parking lot to get it back to him.  He was very casual about getting it back.  He said, "Oh.  You found my pocket knife."  A man of few words, I suppose.  Best wishes.  G

Spyderco does a good job with the stainless scales, really solid.  On the negative side, they are heavy and can be slick.

The FRN, like my Native Chief there, are nice and light, but texturing is too aggressive IMO.

Partly, it's why I traded the owner of a local knife store my battered Harpy for the then-new Byrd Robin 2 Wharncliffe. The Robin weighs near-zilch, and cuts basically anything like hot butter.  The Harpy was a little dull (probably would've been fixed by a trip back to CO), and the clip only was set up for tip down, RH (compared to four-position as on modern examples).

Keep looking for the Merlin, but they seem hard to find. They were the early lightweight version of the Harpy that's smaller than today's Tasman Salt.

Would this year's participants be added to last years in order to get the requisite number for a badge?   :dunno:  :tu:

That’s a mod question, but my guess is probably not.

Would be neat if we got enough participants for a badge, but at T-3 days we’re only half way there.

Even if no badge, we’ll have fun with it anyway.

I always understood that it took 10 participants to generate a new badge.  More like reaching a certain bar to be worth the bother of a mod to make a badge.  Lately I have been seeing friend ReamerPunch making new badges.  Something like the Where's Waldo badge or Carmen Sandiego badge.  Friend Aztec likes to make badges also.
I think RP enjoys making badges.  As a mod he could get it put on the list as well.  Worth a shot for someone to ask, right?  This challenge is in a bit of a Catch 22 paradox now.  No badge, so few participants.  Few participants, so no badge.
Best wishes.  G

Resilience.... Resilience?  You didn't stick it in the Sos Surprise box, did you?  Seems like I almost put my car keys in there once.  If the box ever (by some miracle) makes it to my place, I will look and see.
I will make a note.... Bob misplaced his Spydie.  Could possibly be in the Sos box.  Maybe not probably, but possibly.  Got your back, Bob.
Best wishes.  G

Badge?  Badge?  Who wants a badge?  I figured that I would take hat in hand and contact friend Reamer Punch by PM this morning.  Just to be totally above board about this, I will add a copy of my PM here.  Best wishes.  G

Hi Reamer,
This is the second year for the Giants of June/Big Blades challenge.  The question has come up about a badge.  It seems that some folks are holding back on doing the challenge because they know there is no possibility of an award.
Conversely, since there is no award, there aren't too many participants.  Sort of a knife related Mobius band. There may never be 10 participants with no badge.  A badge could certainly arouse more interest for next year.
You have demonstrated your affinity and abilities for badge making.  Would you be interested in taking the time to make a badge for the big blades?  I think I will post this PM on the June thread.  I hope that meets with your approval.
Let us know what you decide.  No pressure.  Either way.
Best wishes.  Gary (IMR)

If anyone has any ideas for a badge, let's hear them. Text works, drawings are better. I won't judge your drawing skills. :D

PN , that looks good to me. I think move the blade up a little and incorporate a handle of some kind, but keep the “BIG” with a black handle and blade silhouette. Background whatever anyone choice. I am not an artist, so I will spare you from my stick figure drawings.

Forgive the primitive mockup. I have  vision...

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The white is an grey in the shape of our traditional badge, shrunk down so it only covers ~2/3 of the available area. The white is the rest (transparent?) The red is a knife TOO BIG TO FIT ON THE BADGE!

Just a quick sketch, we can do better, but I think it's a fun idea.

While I'm going to take a break from challenges next month, I have enjoyed seeing the different badge ideas. And last year's challenge was a lot of fun. I'll follow along this year!

Day 1

Looks like I get to kick this one off.  Hold the ball steady, Lucy.  I almost didn't make it.  Internet problems.  This will be my carry for the month.  At least that is the plan.  I have had this thing for years.  Never carried it a single time.
I have had several of these big jack knives.  I think this is the only stainless one I ever owned.  Best wishes.  G

Lucy moved the ball just as I ran up to kick it.  I did a back flip and landed on something soft.  My head.  Good grief!  So far so good with the oversize carry.  I haven't noticed it in my pocket at all.  Best wishes.  G

Nice one, Gary! :like: It looks to be an older one, possibly with a saber grind master blade. Am I correct?

Day 1

Today’s carry will be my ZT0452CF. This is one of my favorite knife patterns and is a really joy when I do take the time to carry it. Its got a lot of blade in a slender package that just disappears in the pocket. This pattern also has one of the best action of the Zero Tolerance line up.
