Day 26

The Voyager and I found what may be the largest spider I have personally encountered in the wild hiding under a piece of our firewood.

Fortunately, these wolf spiders are not dangerous to humans.  Also fortunate that I am not afraid of spiders, or flipping that log and seeing this one there might have given me quite a scare.

We stayed at this terrible camp my first year in scouts. No idea how the troop picked it. Food was bad, programming was bad, facilities were bad. Our site had the "spider tent" that I think had a few wolf spiders in it. After trying to cram an entire patrol into a two man tent, I was eventually banished there with one or two other guys. Came out a lot less afraid of spiders than I went in.

Day 26

Surprised I didn't post these yet this month. The bigger one is just over 5", while the smaller is a bit over 3". Very thin and slicey, got them primarily to use for fish, but haven't used them for that yet. I've got my eye on an aftermarket kydex for the smaller, as a possible pocket fixie.

It has been my observation that the provided tents at camps do not close up in such a way as to completely prevent insects, spiders, etc. from getting in or out.  While this is in contrast with most commercially available tents (which usually have zippers for this purpose), it hasn’t really been an issue in my experience unless someone does something foolish to attract them (e.g. food in the tent, light left on in the tent with flaps open).

It certainly doesn’t bother me.  I’ve been known to sleep in my cot or hammock under the stars when the weather is favorable; also to simply doze off in my camp chair by the fire.

Yeah, most camp grounds we went to that provided tents were canvas wall tents. Better air flow, better in the rain, worse for bugs. We tried to drag the cots out and sleep out at least one night at summer camp, weather permitting. Did it once in a while on bed rolls otherwise.

That’s a beaut!  I still don’t understand why the Ti isn’t a standard offering.

Day 27

Home from camp.  Overall, the Cold Steel Large Voyager performed every task I asked of it without hesitation, once I got the pocket clip tension adjusted to my preference.

One minor quibble is that the knife is thicker than it should be, which isn’t an issue in hand but means it doesn’t carry quite as nicely in pocket as it might.  Considering the knife already has stainless steel liners, I would think thinning out the handles a bit wouldn’t create any other problems.

The more serious disappointment is the amount of rust that has formed on the blade in less than a week of hot, sticky, sweaty summer carry.  I realize that stainless steel “stains less” but isn’t rust proof.  However, it seems predictable that (1) people would carry a pocket knife in, you know, their pockets, and (2) those pockets might be sweaty, at least in the summertime.  Also, the main reason I prefer stainless over carbon steel is that I don’t want to have to mess with keeping it oiled all the time.  I’m left questioning whether this steel is really a good choice for the application.

Stainless that stains from being damp for a couple minutes (I'm looking at you, Leatherman!) is one of my knife peeves. I don't expect to be able to throw it in the lake, but it should be able to get splashed and make it through the weekend.

Bummer on the rusting on the blade Nate. Try washing it with some dawn dishwashing soap in hot water to get off all of the salt from being carried this week. Once that is done try soaking it over night in Evaporust. The iron oxide should turn black or disappear. When you remove it from the Evaporust it may flash rust so oil it right away after you dry it. Any way hope it helps.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I probably won’t go to that much trouble over a $40 knife.

Day 20:

Gerber Strong Arm. I balked at the $80-100  price it has been over the past decade or so. Finally, Tractor Supply was blowing them out last fall at $30, so I bought one.

It's a pretty darn heavy-duty knife, and I also liked that it's combo edge for rope and brush.

I zip-tied a MOLLE 9mm pouch I'd gotten with a Benchmade strap cutter (despite it not fitting very well) to the front of the sheath. It will hold most multitools, knives, and small pliers pretty well. Saves me from digging in my pockets or adding yet another pouch to my work belt.

I have one or two of those floating around.  Decent knives; a steal for $30.  Good score!

Day 21:

Unpacked weed whacker--Walmart's cheap-ish Hart 40V attachment-capable model. Also  bought the  brush cutter with it. These are made by TTi, and will also take Ryobi and others attachments--handy, as Hart doesn't have a hedge trimmer, blower, or sweeper that fits the power head.

Had I known the Ryobi was brushless for $50 more, I would've ordered it. However, Home  Depot--hour and a half away. Walmart--ten minutes.

Day 28

Electricity stayed off a long time yestiddy.  Fortunately, nothing worth mentioning was lost in my fridge or freezer.  Unfortunatly, that was largely because it was empty except for a jar of pickles and some raspberry preserves.  I had raspberry preserves on toast for supper.  Decided not to add pickles.
Nothing to drink but water in the house.  I could have made coffee, but it was too hot for that.  Need to make a jaunt to W-Mart today for some stuff.  Until then, I will make some.... let's see ...... toast for breakfast.  Yummy.
Best wishes.  G

I have a pohl force prepper one, bought on a whim, and thought I would look it over, Vs the aurora 2

The prepper one is 5mm thick, and niolox steel, which is okay, it looks good, but not feeling it, so it will be rehomed

DAY 28

I have an Old Oak custom in 14c28n, with desert ironwood handles scales...this is a really nice blade, modelled next to the Helle.

It is just over 5 inches, and quite wide a blade

Now that is a mirror finish....

It is expensive, and beautifully finished unfortunately, as it is sooo nice, I don't want to smash it around.... might need a new home?

Happy Super Tool Saturday. Finished up painting the trim in the bedroom today. The ZT0452TI helped me demask the tape on the floor. The SuperTool helped install the screws for the blinds. I have gone as far as I can. The wife will need to pick a color so I can finish painting the walls. Right now, the walls look like a polka dotted cow. All the wall repairs are done and primed. Hopefully, I can get her to pick a color after she returns from her business trip.

Day 28

Coming to the end of the month, so time to do some recaps. Here's awl the folders I carried (I think) this month.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

From top to bottom, now with awards!

Dinner's Ready! Award- Opinel 12 OD: Way too big for the blade, but I'm a sucker for extra tools like a whistle. Great knife to leave in the bottom of a bag, glovebox, etc., not for EDC. I have fun blowing the whistle if I use it to make dinner. Everyone definitely knows the ham is done.

Brick Award- Victorinox Evoke: There is no reason a knife this size should be this heavy. I still carry it like three times a year. You're better off with a 111 or 130mm SAK if you want a "big" Victorinox.

Best Folding Kitchen Knife Award- Victorinox Folding Paring Knife: This is the knife I take if I might have to carve for the holidays away from home. It's not super comfortable (and not the best blade shape) for EDC, but it has its place.

Too Good To Be True Award- Spyderco Resilience: An awful lot of Spyderco for an awfully low price. And the awful clip screws and action to prove it. Skip. I want to get a Byrd and see if they're any better.

Best Kitchen Knife As A Pocket Knife Award- Opinel 10 Slim: Really straddling the line between a mini-filet knife and a pocket knife. Great in hand, very slicy, concerningly thin blade stock. Great choice as long as you don't abuse it.

Surprise Winner Award- Rough Ryder Sabacc: Why is this knife so good? Solid build, great walk and talk, good hand feel, looking great, IT HAS A HALF STOP! My whole hearted recommendation if you want a big knife for not a big price.

Knife Gary Got Everyone To Buy Award: Case Folding Hunter '65- TWO GIANT BLADES! 'Nuff said!

The Sabacc is more practical. This is more fun to carry. The Sabacc will probably outlive me. This will probably outlive the universe. The Sabacc retails for and weighs around half as much (depending on which handles you get). As a Pennsylvanian, you can pry my Case from my cold dead hands, but I admit the Sabacc is probably the best all around big smurfin' folding knife I carried.

Tomorrow, fixies!

I have a Robin 2 Wharncliffe and the Cara Cara 2 Rescue. I paid around $30 each for both (though technically, I traded my well-worn Spyderco Harpy for the Robin--I paid like $25 for it in rough shape).

Personally, I prefer the Robin to the Dragonfly on which its based. I get a better grip on the scales, and the handles have liners underneath. Also, a decent 4-position clip. Not the bent wire as on the Dragonfly.

I am ordering a Lynch NW Ti clip for my Bond, and will likely try a solid (not wire) clip on the Dragonfly as well.

Day 22:

Weed-eated a bit, then turned my attention to the basement. My grandmother has had a ton of problems out of her roughly 10-year-old dryer.  I did my own troubleshooting, and replaced the thermostat and thermal fuse with whatever was on Amazon cheap (with plans to eventually replace it with OEM). The appliance repair company put a new heating element in, and it was something I could've gotten cheaper from Amazon--as it was just a generic part as well (but priced like Maytag...).  That was about a month ago. It recently overheated. Not sure whose parts are to blame--but it's  likely one of the three.

I got out the Switch Lite this afternoon. I have a DSi (as well as a Game Boy Advance SP needing repair) that I bought in 2009, and recently came back across it. Couldn't find my New Super Mario cartridge for the DS, and couldn't find Super Mario Bros 2/Mario Bros. for the GBA.  I cringed at the prices as I sought to rebuild my old library of titles (have found less than half so far in my stuff)--anything good is as expensive used as it was new--the shovelware you couldn't pay me to take then is the only thing cheap.   Thus, I decided to bite the bullet and buy a Switch Lite from Sam's Club so I had access to the titles at my Walmart and other local stores (else, I'd be stuck with the pricey old DS games at a local comic book shop). Maybe I should've waited, as with the advent of the Switch 2, I'm sure that come Black Friday, all older Switch consoles will be cheap.  Thinking I'll get a regular one here soon.

Been mostly playing older titles available for free with the Switch Online membership.  I mostly just wanted to play Mario Bros and Mario Kart, but I've got 12  hours in Earthbound of all things. Gotta admit, I'm hooked--and I hadn't even heard of it before.

Great write up!

I have a Sabacc as well, and though mine didn’t make an appearance in this challenge, I agree with your assessment of it.  In fact, I’ve found all the Rough Ryder Reserve knives I own to have very good F&F and W&T, and think they are excellent value for the money.

The Case 65 pattern is a classic, and as I’ve said earlier in this thread, I think everyone should have one.  The two-blade model is a bit on the heavy side (unless you manage to snag one of the rare bolsterless versions), but if it is replacing both a pocket knife and a fixed blade hunting knife (which I think was the original intent), then maybe the weight isn’t so unreasonable.  Unfortunately, when the bolsterless CF version came out, they were priced at such a hefty premium above the standard versions that I’m afraid they didn’t sell very well in spite of the substantial weight reduction, so were quickly discontinued.  Also sadly, even the standard models have gotten very expensive of late.

Day 29

Finally made it down to W-Mart yestiddy to buy some groceries.  Looked for some sandwich meats, but there were almost no cold cuts in the store.  Just empty spots on the shelves.  Lots of watermelon.  I haven't bought one in..... maybe ever?  I used to raise some and so did my neighbors.  Some people were shooting fireworks last night.  I can't see a single house from my place now.  Everything has gotten so tall and leafy.
Didn't mow this week.  Still don't have a weedwacker.  Bare spots in my yard are getting bigger.  No rain and high temps (for here anyway).  I think I wound up on the roster for challenges in July, August, and maybe September?  I really don't want to do 4 in a row, but I think I will start out with the July Anniversary challenge and see how it goes.  I never have dropped out of a challenge, but this might be the first.
I hope some members who did the Giants of June/Big Blades last year will apply for a badge.  After all, there is no time limit stated on when you can apply for one.  We do have a nice badge this year thanks to friend Reamer Punch.  Best wishes.  G

Here’s my ZT0452TiBLU on cigar duty.

It came to me used, showing some wear and scratches.  But action is still smooth and lockup still tight, and I suspect it may outlast me.

I definitely prefer the all Ti versions to the CF versions; not sure why they aren’t the standard.
