Nice one, Gary! :like: It looks to be an older one, possibly with a saber grind master blade. Am I correct?

Not too old.  I looked up the Case date chart on-line last week.  I think it was made in 2000.  Saber grind.  The second blade has notches milled along the top surface.  First one of these I've had with that feature.  Simulated rosewood.  Some of my old ones had a lanyard hole.  This one doesn't.  My first Stainless Steel example.  Best wishes.  G

Day 1: A SOG Vulcan I bought at an indoor flea market last year in pretty bad shape for $10. Cleaned it up, did some adjustments, and straightened out a bent clip.

Personally, I prefer it to Benchmades. It's very ambidextrous and suited to both LH and RH use (I always carry and use knives left-handed--southpaw here), and opens quick without any assists other than the studs+ flipper (typically something I hate, as they're often on assisted openers that don't have studs).

SOG"s official measurements  for the Vulcan used 3.5" in most literature and retailers who still have listings up.

Yet, the blade is exactly the same length as my Spyderco Byrd Cara Cara 2 Rescue which is marketed as having a 4" blade by Spyderco.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Used it to open up an new joystick, a pretty inexpensive Logitech Extreme 3D Pro.

I had planned on getting the Logitech G29 for racing/driving and just a cheap joystick for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 and Flight Simulator X.

Instead, I bought a Thrustmaster T128 and T-Flight HOTAS One at Walmart yesterday for much less money (about $280 total vs. $320 for just the G29)   I had originally thought about sending it back to Amazon, but decided to keep it so I could program it for use alongside the T128 in Farming Simulator (mostly to map keyboard controls to, as well as use for  loaders). At $30, it's a third the price of the Thrustmaster Farmstick marketed for use with Farming Simulator 22 alongside the T128 and the Simtask kit.

Also, despite the low cost, it feels like a better stick than the one on the Thrustmaster T-Flight setup--and I like the layout better.  I'm gonna try flying with it a bit before it gets programmed for FS22.

Unfortunately I will not be able to join you the entire month, I do want to follow along.

Eye sureties are planned with several followup visits already scheduled.

My photo to contribute is the Victorinox Hunter, a solid large folder with an ample handle.

The Alox Hunter Pro (red) is camera shy.  May make an appearance later.

You AWL have fun.

PS: I do have a couple fix blades I utilize camp and tour hikes.  But not planning much excitement this month🥲
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Day 1

Today’s carry will be my ZT0452CF. This is one of my favorite knife patterns and is a really joy when I do take the time to carry it. Its got a lot of blade in a slender package that just disappears in the pocket. This pattern also has one of the best action of the Zero Tolerance line up.

Day 1

Carried my 0452CF today as well.  I agree it’s a gem, and one of my favorites.  It cut the tag off a McD’s toy for one of my daughters.

Nice write up!

I was hoping not to have to address this issue during the challenge, but…

I happen to have a SOG Vulcan as well, and agree it’s a good knife.  Mine is the tanto version, but the blade measures maybe 3.5” or a bit under by the AKTI Method, leaving it a good 1/2” short of the 4” blade length requirement.  Assuming yours measures about the same, would you kindly consider showing us one of your 4”+ blades?

Thank you.

I kind of figured. Also, looking at my photos, it's still technically shorter than the 4" Byrd. After doing some measurements afterwards, I did something else with one of the larger blades I had handy, a Mikov Venando 376. Made in the Czech Republic, the blade is 5.5" with a saw back. It's a little too thick to work effectively as a saw, and the saw teeth are too sharp to allow me to put a thumb on the spine. However, it's a sharp high quality knife.  Few years back, a woodworking supply business out of Missouri was blowing them out at bargain prices, and I think I got three or four different ones, with this being the only fixed blade (wish I'd gotten one of the Uton Czech Army survival knives when they too were cheap--a surplus dealer in PA recently had a few of the issue sheaths for next to nothing, so I could've outfitted it to Czech Army standards).

Getting replaced with a Glock Field Knife (also, I have an Ontario Spec Plus SP-2 based on the Jet Pilot's Survival Knife), as it's tough, but inexpensive. Seems in the US, the sawback 81 is more common than the typically issued 78.  Plus, Glocks are kind of designed to be used for semi-abusive tasks--heck, they actually predate Glock firearms!

Thanks for being a good sport!

That’s a cool-looking Mikov, even if the saw isn’t terribly functional.

Day 1

Speaking of Glocks and sawbacks...

We had some kind of pride month kick off street fair in town today. Did a lap, had a beer and some fair food. Decided to be thematic and carry the "ombre" Evoke, which is a cousin to Loopcutter's Hunter Pro, and roughly matches the bi pride colors. Sliced some pizza and cut some soda rings to save the turtles. It's right on the 4" line, so awlso pictured is my Glock 81. I don't think I've used the sawback yet, I'll try to fix that this month. The Evoke is kind of heavy for the size, but it's a good sturdy worker.

Couple of nice ones, BPR!

I’ve eyed up the Evoke before, but I couldn’t get over the weight for a 4” folder, nor the price for a knife that didn’t feature a premium steel.

   Day 2

Carrying the Folding Hunter hasn't been onerous so far.  I thought the size and weight would be annoying, but it isn't.  I remember when Schrade made a similar knife with one large blade and a saw.  That would be ideal.  I hear that Schrade's current generation of knives are not so great.  I haven't owned any, so I don't really know.
I like the pattern pretty well for an outdoor knife.  Clyde Ormond wrote in one of his books how an old mountain lion guide carried one.  He told Ormond that he peeled lions with one blade, and spuds with the other.
    Best wishes.  G

I know Victorinox does not disclose their knife steels other than special.

The steel on my Hunter and Alox (red) Hunter Pro (older than the Evoke) is a much more stout knife steel and used in the SAK models.  It requires patience when sharpening.  I also had an Orange Hunter, that saw a lot of use and I will admit, it rivaled many a fix blade in function.    The darn ORANGE grew legs on a hunting trip never to be seen again, and the black one pictured was its replacement just because it was about $15  less than the orange. 😢
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

It's definitely not a knife I'd have bought for MSRP. The funny thing is, it's actually light than a Buck 110, which is shorter, but it doesn't feel that way.

Not a fan of current Schrades. I bought a couple for a comparison w/ the old US and Irish ones a year or two ago. Even the "bargain" old ones are better than today's.

I look at that Case pattern pretty often. I always decide what I really want is just a giant Trapper with a spey blade that size instead.

Gary - what model is your CASE HUNTER?

I like the dual blade model, and do have a Panama Trapper, but I do not think it is more than a 3-1/2” blade. Same as my GEC model 23. (IIRC🙄)

@ BPRoberts -  the EVOKE color handle, of blended Red and Blue has been the one I have thought of just having.
Considered it a USA color scheme.

Still a unique style for a Victorinox model.

Hi Gordon,
The CASE is a 6265 SAB.  At least that is what's stamped on it.  I will post a photo of the tang stamp so everyone can check the X's and O's.  Length closed is about 5 1/4 inches.  I have had several of these things.  Four maybe.  I don't remember.
Best wishes. G

Day 2

Went with the ZT0452CFM390BLU today. Used it to free a cheap blue anodized titanium bolt pen I picked up on the big River site. The quality of the pen was really good, however, the ink cartridge was not so great. I swapped in a spare Parker gel cartridge with 0.5 point and it is now excellent.

What a great start to the challenge. I am really enjoying all of the write up and seeing what y’awl are carrying.

It is great to have you join in where you can Gordon. I hope your surgery goes well later this month and the recovery will be a quick one.

This one is all I have left.  It is the only one I ever got that was stainless steel.  I can't keep anything.  I swapped off all the nice CASE knives I ever had .
I offered to sell this one to an old guy years ago for $40.  He looked at it and said, "This is one of the new ones.  They're not any good."  So, I put it in a drawer and that's where it stayed for years.
Seems like I had one of these with the bonestag handles.  I know I had two or three with laminated rosewood looking CV blades.  At least one of them had a lanyard hole in the butt from the factory.  Then I got this stainless steel one.  I had the sheath, but every time I picked it up it would be white with mildew.  I would clean it off and finally got tired of messing with it and threw it away.
Best wishes.  G

I understand.  I think the carbon models would be in demand today by collectors more so than the SS versions.    Yet, large folders just are not as popular as when we were younger.   Yours still cuts and looks pretty good.
Regarding CASE SHEATHS, it is best to oil them down on arrival and allow to dry.  Not sure the tanning process, yet have heard of them rotting away when not cared for.

Day 2

Another borderline folder and fixie day. Today we've got the Opinel 10 slim/Effilé and an Ontario knives ASEK. The Opi is billed at 4", and measures right about there. They updated this line last year, used to be even thinner. They used to be marketed as table/filet knives, now it's table/pocket. Still very thin blade stock, sill borderline concerningly so. I've got knives that're as thick just above the edge as this one is on the spine. Definitely not a hard use knife, but a joy to carry, light, easy to use, good feel, etc. Handle is also about 4" and reasonably slim. This is probably going to be one of my main carries on days where I can't have a big knife hanging off my pocket this month.

I got the ASEK after picking up an example of the old Vietnam era version for my dad as a gift. Fell in love with it the minute I picked it up, and decided to get myself the updated one. I like the old one a bit better, but still a great knife. Big enough but not clunky, another saw back (I think it's a bit more aggressive than the Glock, but will have to do a real world comparison this month).

I like the pattern pretty well for an outdoor knife.
Indeed.

I seem to recall a member here (or maybe it was back on the old KF) who was adamant about field dressing his game (mostly deer) with his Case Folding Hunter.  He couldn’t be bothered with a fixed blade, and swore that a simple slippie was easier to clean than any other folding knife.

While Nessmuk’s folding knife appeared to a large Moose pattern, I think the Case 65 pattern would have met with his approval.  He noted, “The strong double-bladed pocket knife is the best model I have yet found, and, in connection with the sheath knife, is all sufficient for camp use.”

I look at that Case pattern pretty often. I always decide what I really want is just a giant Trapper with a spey blade that size instead.
Get one.  You know you want to.
 :pok:

A spey blade wouldn’t do anything that the skinning blade on the 65 pattern wouldn’t do.

Besides, it is worth the price of admission just to see the looks on people’s faces when you whip that sucker out and open it up.

Awesome day 2 posts by awl so far!

Day 2

Inspired by Gary’s Case 65 pattern Folding Hunter, I slipped this unusual version into my pocket today.  With carbon fiber scales and no bolsters, it is much lighter than the more traditional versions.

Cigar duty of course.  On these knives, the clip point blade is my general utility/dirty blade, and the skinning blade is my “clean” blade for food, cigars, etc.

Day 3

I can see where friend Nate's carbon fiber CASE would solve a big portion of the weight problem.  Nice one.
For your soap fans out there, I will bring you up to date on the latest.  The sad Sos Surprise box soap opera.  Felicity has just learned that she is pregnant.  Possibly Justin is the father, but what about that wild night when Felicity was sodden with alcohol in Rio?  Richard and Kathryn both lost their jobs in high fashion after the earthquake destroyed Friendlyvale.  Then there was the continuing saga of the shadowy figure awaiting the arrival of.... the box.  The shadowy figure gently shook the box at the post office in a dark corner when it came.  Nothing made any cooing or hungry gurgles, so he breathed a sinister sigh of relief, and transported it.
Here it is.  The actual contents are much too intense for family viewing.  Keeping that in mind, the mysterious filling in the box has been masked out with a shipping label and a large CASE knife.  What was actually in the box?  Stay tuned.    [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Young fella, if you keep showing how functional that HUNTER actually is in your life, I just may be swayed yo hunt one down and set my slim select 112 on the side lines.

And, wow FELICITY is with child, most surprised, as I thought she was once a he, Felix a lifetime ago!

Day 3

Carrying my most rare ZT0452 today. This one is the 0452CFBLUBLK version. This one is a European market exclusive. I picked mine up from a French cutlery shop and had to re-export it back into the U.S. Blade steel on this one is M390 just like the ZT0452CFM390BLU.

Beautiful collection of ZT0452 over the last few days!  It’s one of my favorites as well.

I can see where friend Nate's carbon fiber CASE would solve a big portion of the weight problem.  Nice one.
 Gary!

It really does.  One of my more traditional Case FHs tips the scales at 6.7 oz, while the bolsterless carbon fiber version only comes in at 4.3 oz, about 2/3 the weight of the traditional version and about the same weight as a Vic Deluxe Tinker.

You make a compelling argument... I'm eying the carbon steel bone or stainless buffalo at the moment.
Tough call.

Stainless of course “stains less” if you’re commonly in hot, humid, or wet environments.

Case’s CV/CS FH takes a wicked edge though.

You’ll probably pay a pretty hefty premium for the buffalo horn over most of their other handle materials though, and I’m not sure it’s the most durable choice if you end up carrying and using the knife a lot.
