Oversize Alox SAKs
on: April 25, 2025, 01:10:21 PM
I've been tinkering with a couple of 5/6 layer alox SAK combinations and landed on two that I really liked. Both stemmed from my appreciation of the blade heavy Swiss Bianco special the Carver.  Thanks to ComboTool for advice on a couple of issues I came up against - main one being lack of spring tension in the middle layers - hence the stainless steel pins in both of these to stop the centre one bending out of shape. The 6 layer still loses a bit of tension in the middle layers (due to flex in that long pin still I imagine) but is still acceptable. You cannot use a brass 2.5mm centre pin in a build this thick. If I was to do this again I might even drill out the centre spring pivot holes to 3mm too - not taking these apart now though ;0) Had to spend a while getting the layer orders right so all nail nicks were accessible but in the final config they all are very satisfyingly usable. The 6 layer uses drilled out scissors from a 91mm SAK so the nick is on the opposite side to the usual 93 mm ones.

5 layer with GAK combo tool and 6 layer with the 'urban' 3d phillips/openers combination

Nice job! Since you seem to like dual large blade configurations, have you considered making one of them serrated?

Definitely something I have considered and would like to do but I’m going to give that some practice on some old/broken blades first before taking the files to a nice one :0) I’ve got some 91mm junkers I can use …watch this space.

You do have redrill the hole and reshape the pivot end but works quite well. Would be better using a non-match striker version but no way I was going to take apart my Victorinox GAK even though it’s a bit of a scruffy one.   ;)

Yes very similar - they are a big sturdy chunk of metal - I use mine all the time now.

Bit late to the party, but I have used a slightly different approach to accommodating multiple tool layers on the alox platform here, namely by using a central rigid stainless steel liner.
Cheers!

That’s a very cool mod. Did the magnifier go in with no modification? Agree that snap is a huge problem as the layers increase so the stiffer central liner is a good way of getting that tension back.

I was edcing the one with the GAK combo tool (rebuilt with some nice green scales LE scales) and managed to lose it somehow. Gutted. Like yours the amount of donors made a repeat build unlikely! :0(

Thanks - IIRC I had to file a little bit off the magnifier tang as the 93mm back spring protruded a bit and applied excess pressure, as well as remove the nail nick for space reasons. Your mods look spectacular. Sorry to hear about your loss :-(

These are my 5 layers 93 mm knives – I don't want to say ALU, because one is ebony  :)
They all have at least two big blades and one little blade.
