How do you view EDC?

Poll

Is EDC a hobby unto itself or a function of a hobby?

Definitely a hobby unto itself- I buy things because I like the things.
It makes my hobbies more enjoyable- I buy things to use.
EDC is a necessary evil- I need these things for work.
A combination of any of the options above- I will explain below.

@rodia77 My thoughts exactly. You've summarized my EDC journey in just a few lines.  :D

I found myself in many earlier posts in the thread, too.  ;)

All of the above, of course.

I use most of what I carry pretty regularly, and I’m always considering ways to refine it.

I do sometimes buy things I don’t really intend to carry, which makes me a collector as well.

The only evil about it is that sometimes it becomes difficult to keep my pants up.

I have worked in the repair, maintenance and installation industry my entire professional life.

And, actually before on the farm and landscaping gigs in school.

But, since 1973, I have made a career fixing stuff, improving stuff and just delivery excellent service I. The electronic and computer game. Small equipment and big stuff, rooms full of stuff.  Traveling to the problem, always new landscapes.

Became specialized on some gear, a dedicated tool kit for some gear, as being mobile was necessary.  But, having the right tool for the job was actually the most important.   Always on the search for that edge.

Until, I was at a LOWES buying more cutting disks for my right angle grinder, I spied a LM ST300, $40 clearance.  2016?
I snatched it and never looked back.    That single tool changed my then current work gig. Safes me so many steps back to my truck for regular tools.

I then was always on the look out for the best of the best. The new sharps, unique items.  Plus, I was gaining points galore with hotel stays, exchange for Cabela’s or Amazon and even Walmart gift cards. Shared them with the mrs.s.  So she knew I was spending our paychecks or savings.

When I do buy a knife or a tool it will get used.  And it will get past down to grandkids hopefully much later.

I can go on and on
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

I also, found by quality clothing, like Carhart helps, and 2” wide belts, made by leather harness makers sold at a AMISH owned work boot shop.  About $45 a belt.   And I have dropped about 15 lbs too! 😜

 LC!

I have a couple good quality leather belts from Fox Creek Leather.

When I plan to do a lot of walking, I usually break out the VTAC suspenders.

I'll second the Carhartt recommendation. The pants I wear have a "fifth pocket" that allows for comfortable enough carry of a SOG PowerLock. Of course, if you're used to carrying a 58mm SAK in that manner, adjustments may be necessary.

I feel like my edc journey hit all of the options at some point but I ended voting for D. Early on I edc'd a Spyderco or SAK out of functional necessity or work. Then expanded it to mini first aid, etc. when my son was born. Then it started to be an expensive hobby. Now I just carry what I can fit in my front jean pockets and it's the basic necessities (SAK and flashlight) and a mix of occasional use (band aids in my wallet, small scissors, Leatherman Mini Tool, tape wrapped around a fresnel card slip, a freebie torch lighter, Delica), and one `cross my fingers` hope to never use glass breaker coz I'm a worrywart.

I`m thinking that once I get to be an older fart I'll probably just carry a SAK and flashlight and will be perfectly happy. I see this as part of my journey as I've noticed that my edc has gotten simpler and I'm starting to see the stuff on social media as toys and most companies trying to take my money rather than truly adding value to my life.

Sorry if my opinion is unpopular, but it's my story

Before joining here, I used to be a CRKT knife guy for everyday, and a MT for camping. Now that I know quality differences it turned into a high end EDC blade, and a MT of some sort. For the last few months, its been the Civivi Yonder, Vic MiniChamp, and Fenix E12. Does everything I need on a daily work needs. When doing construction a few weeks ago I strapped on a Wave, but by the end of the week found the SwissTool Spirit a better tool. Now the Wave is just back in my backpack, as a just in case tool.

Would be interested to know what made you choose the Spirit over the Wave in the end. It’s my preference as well, just seems to cover what I find useful without a lot I don’t. Also the dedicated Phillips with reach is more useful to me  on a MT than a bit driver.  If I want to be prepared for working with a bunch of  different bits, I’m going to carry a proper driver, because at the end of the day a MT is never going to be a great screwdriver.

XDDDD my conclussions since 6 months ago. My EDC right now is basically the Swisschamp and a TS10 SG : D

It is still very nice to carry a magnifying glass card, a tick card, some spare duck tape on another card, etc. But the basics are a SAK and a flashlight.
