My wife and I always enjoy the Ms Phoenix saga.  We both get a kick out of it.

Growing up we had a store named Munden's Discount Center.  I think there were a few across the state of Texas but not very many.  It had that home grown feeling to it.

Regardless, this store had a little bit of everything.  I remember it had a Coke machine as soon as you walked in.  Mom would give me maybe a quarter to buy one of the glass bottled Cokes.  You had to put in your money before it would let you pull out the bottle.  Once you were done drinking, there was a wooden crate next to the machine where you would put your bottle.

Dad bought me first fishing pole there.  We bought the pole and the reel separately.  I still have and use that pole though the reel gave up a long time ago.

My in-laws still have a mom and pop shop right outside their neighborhood, Brazos Bend Home & Ranch store.  Been there for many years and still has a little bit of everything.  It has a small meat market in the back, some grocery items, some fishing items, some horse tack items, tools, etc.  Owner changed a few years ago but they were smart enough to keep it as is.  Always like stopping there, even if it's only to buy a soda.
May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

I decided to use the Gooble street level view map thing to take a photo of the elusive domain of Ms. Phoenix.  You know the movie vampire mythos of vampires not showing up in a mirror or a photograph?  I am beginning to wonder.
I can get a picture of the little hump of ground above the road where the being known as Ms. Phoenix lives.  Is lives the correct word for something undead?  Well, I don't really KNOW she is undead.  Anyway, I can get a (winter) image of the driveway and the green plastic drift fence that someone put up around the house.  All sorts of stuff would blow out of the yard of this place and wind up in the road.  Maybe the state put up the drift fence to keep it from being a road hazard.  I don't know.  So, I can get the hill in the photo.  The driveway.  The drift fence.  Junk along the bank below the house that the drift fence either didn't catch or passers-by threw from their vehicles.  Whatever.  But no house image at all.  It is fogged out.  No spooky old cottage.  No little blue car.  Just a blur.
I wondered if the other houses in the vicinity were blurred out.  Nope.  I can get a good image of the house across the road that nobody lives in.  The old barn.  On up the road a little is another house.  Clear as a bell.  I turned the Gooble directional dingus around and got a photo of my house.  Trees around it, but not blurry. I guarantee I live in it.
Is the undead invisibility factor at work?  Did Hollyweird get that right?  Is the cottage blurred out for other reasons?  Could this person be doing secret work of some sort and some sort of agency has made it so the Ms. Phoenix cottage can't be photographed?  I will try to post a screenshot from the net.  It looks really rugged with no leaves on the trees.  It actually looks lots better in the summer.  The green drift fence doesn't help the appearance any.  Best wishes.  G

PS  I wrote this thing yestiddy, but didn't post it.  No, I didn't blur the image.  I don't really know how to do that, actually.  I looked at the thing and saw the massive, creepy looking tree to the right of the image.  I would be willing to swear that thing doesn't exist.  I go by there all the time and never saw it.  G

Day 21

I am still trying to get rid of some of my excess rice supply.  I might not be the best at lots of thing, but I can cook rice perfectly every time.  This was a new brand for me.  Says long grain, but it isn't.  I used the Dollar Tree acquisition to open the bag.  I think I got some orange juice down in the it and made it sticky.  The knife not the rice.
If I got paid my just reward for all the work I did outside this month, I would be dragged outside and shot.  Didn't feel well early in the month and couldn't get back in the swing of things.  I think I will make a piece of toast for breakfast and watch the sumo highlights.
I enjoyed reading the hometown memories from friends Aztec and Sos.  Made me a little sad.  We really can't go home again.  G

Day 21.  The last 1/3, the final leg.

I had made a decision, early in the challenge,  that if I was yet able to participate at this point, I would break the  other OZARK VERSION out of its package and utilize it too!

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Allowed the scout’s awl to slice open the plastic.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

And, now free, the key implements, Corkscrew, Scissors and CORK BORER (not awl or poker with eye).

I like the Grey scales, and the price was just as reasonable as the RED.  IIRC, the Grey may have been the first version I saw available.   I do know a few of this version was gifted to those that needed.

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

The suburb I spent most of my childhood (and my early adulthood) in was initially very quiet. My parents said they could sit on the front porch all day and one car would go past the house. Next to no retail activity was present in the late 1970s and into the 1980s. By the late 1990s, I was working in the True Value hardware store. A less-than-great driver later plowed into it, and the owners closed up shop. I haven't been there in maybe a decade, and my parents have since moved. Any changes therein are likely for the worse.

On the subject of TV, both one of my VA contacts and my best friend in the area can't understand how I get through life without a TV. Part of it has to do with all the streaming nonsense. It seems that if they can't provide quality programming, then they just overwhelm you with quantity.

Day 20 (catching up)

The aforementioned best friend called me for assistance yesterday evening, so I wasn't able to post. But here's another Camillus, this time a 99.

I've never been able to establish a conclusive date range for this one (my best guess is 1960s to mid-1970s). But I can say this is some of the finest jigged Delrin you'll ever see.

Day 21

Three photos for today necessitate a second post. Here's a little hobo-like job marked Ridge Runner. I wouldn't consider it a true hobo, as it doesn't split into three separate utensils.

The bail flopped around and made itself into an annoyance when trying to shovel food out of a can or dig deep into a peanut butter jar. Since none of my SAK-alikes have pliers, the SOG PowerLock was called into action.

I think I would consider the cute picnic knife a hobo.  Some hoboes have a split personality, and some have it all together.  Evidently the term was originally hoe boy.  Mostly homeless men who would hire out as field hands, usually for manipulating a hoe.  Make a little money and likely get something to eat as well.  Nice Camillus too.
Best wishes.  G

Sunday was interesting.  I ran a little low on some items I wanted for the kitchen.  My rustic driveway was nice and firm in spite of the hard thunderstorm Saturday evening.  Started down the road, and..... a tree down in the driveway.
Looked it over.  Too big for the bow saw in my truck.  Decided to walk home and get out my chainsaw.  By the time I walked home, I was in no shape for chaining, sawing, cranking, heaving, or piling.  I decided to call my tree man.
Left a message.  He got back to me and said he could come Monday morning.  So, that's where I am.  I still don't have all of a dead pine tree out of my side yard from a month ago.  I felt pretty good and cleared out some more of it last week.  What is left isn't a problem actually.  Just ugly.
I might have to go buy an electric chain saw.  I am tired of trying to crank a big heavy gas model.  Might have to take a photo when my tree man comes.

Day 21: 1989 Case 62031LHR.

Moved my spare (and currently unused) desktop downstairs for use with the 3D printer, and to use to play American Truck Simulator and flight sims (as my wheel stand is a pain to move around) as well as for a later, eventually permanent setup for American Truck Simulator and racing sims. I plan to build a PC from scratch for those. Small upgrades and repairs have really broadened my horizons with computers from just buying prebuilt consumer models.

Received as a part of a trade for a couple of cheaper knives (an Opinel #12 and a couple of Rough Ryders) a couple months ago. I retired a 1985 once I got this one. It's beat to holy heck--broken bail and worn blade.

My Granddad received a 1985 from Pittston Coal as a work knife. It was handed down to me in 2017 for mechatronics class to strip cable. Weirdly enough, those are carbon--while later ones (a buddy of mine in that same class had a 1990s one) were all stainless. Dunno why Case made that change. Perhaps Camillus (who made them) dictated it? Weird when the hawkbill electrician they made was carbon during its whole run until well into the '00s.

Day 22

Couldn't get out of my driveway yesterday because of the tree.  Supposed to get it cut up about 9AM this morning.  Sounds like a light rain outside.  Seems like this challenge has almost turned into a Camillus challenge.  I had a USMC demo knife made by Camillus when I was a sprout.  I thought it was really something, but carrying it was less than perfect.  I was heavy to carry.  It stayed around a while, then my Dad made it disappear.  Just like he did my Camillus Cub knife.
I never was one to lavish affection on personal items.  Pocket cutlery was something that just came and went.  I remember some of the things I owned, but probably have forgotten most of them.  As long as I had some sort of pocketknife, I didn't concern myself too much with what it was.  Like a fellow I knew named Jack.  He lived with his great-aunt, and she did the cooking.  Claimed he didn't care what there was to eat as long as there was enough of it.
Photo of a Craftsman/Camillus.  Genuine simulated wood handles.  Made from the Delrin tree as near as I can tell.  Delrin feels greasy and slippery sometimes.  Other times it doesn't.  I am getting along with the paracord dangler better than I thought.  I got the lanyard thing out of the Sos Surprise Box at one time.  I got the Craftsman out of the box another time.   The cookie box was just an empty I forgot to toss.  The cookies were good, but not enough of them.
Best wishes.

AND... best of all the Zippo thing is red.  That practically makes it a Sak-a-like right there.
Guy came and cut up the dead dogwood blocking my driveway.  He sat on the tailgate of his truck and we had a nice visit.  Talking about old friends and relatives and times.  Tearing off the bottom of your shirt to make a kite tail.  Teachers from high school.  I enjoyed it almost as much as getting my driveway cleared.  Almost.  I forgot to take a photo.
Best wishes.  G
