Day 3
Mail call....
As a fan of scifi & fantasy art I was excited to see the re-launch of Heavy Metal magizine. Missing the No1 per order I got in on the extended ordering for the Hildebrant cover variant, and after a month wait it has arrived
 :woohoo:

*and the Trekker is there too :dunno:
I don't even know how many times I've seen the movie based on that, in the 40+ years that it has been around. Great soundtrack, too.

I have a copy of the movie.  Also have Heavy Metal 2000 which wasn't nearly as good. I think the last time I bought a copy of the magazine had to have been close to 50 years ago.

Day 3:

Cleaned up the basement while working on a few more 3D prints, mostly structural elements for the enclosure kit. Decided to upscale the horse and flip it upside down (saw someone else had printed it that way on Thingiverse).

The MP450 was probably my first good multitool--I got it as a birthday gift from a family friend, well, actually his father. After his father passed, I retired it and went with an MP400 I got in an eBay lot paired with a Leatherman MOLLE XL holster and removable bit adapter/bit kit. Also--the scissors on this one are pretty handy, and quite strong for zip ties and such.

Day 3

My reader and my fountain pen are always in my pocket whether I'm leaving the house or not.  Both are indispensable to me.  I need to be able to write stuff down and I need to be able to read what I'm writing.   :dunno:

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

I didn't realize they relaunched Heavy Metal, I might have to check it out.

Day 3

No one stopped me from opening the mail with an axe.

Going canoeing tomorrow, which is a very Nessmuk activity. Kind of wish I'd put a stainless knife in my carry set. That's not a bad idea if you're doing a limited carry; take at least one stainless for when you're going to get it wet. I'm sure it'll be fine.

Yes, Lego is legit for the challenge.  We have seen a backpack already and a belt type pack.  I remember doing a cooler last year.  I had decided to either turn the Anniversary challenge into a SAK Stack, Spartan, or Opinel badge attempt.  I wanted an Opinel badge last year, but the only Opi I had at that time was one I made myself.  Yes, it was fairly pitiful.
There is still lots of room for creativity in this one.  So far, no watches.  I liked the Lego Grouch.  The additional Nessmuk entry was nice too.  Might be the first Condor on the site?  If I can borrow enough money somewhere, I might just put in a weedwacker post for this month's challenge.  Hmmm?   Best wishes.  G
 :climber:
Thanks for the idea. Gary.
My wife picked us up one of those battery powered Chinese weed whackers.  Still unused at this point in time  , out in the cart shed.

Flower photos are always good, Echo.  Probably be a lot of fireworks.  One of the neighbors used to let off a cannon every July 4th.  Newcomers often called emergency numbers so the fire department or whatever could fish out the smoking remains of the unfortunate explosion.  Finally, someone must have gotten the idea that blasting that thing was smurfing off the neighborhood.  Best wishes.  G

Day 4

Annoying people started shooting off fireworks above my house about 9PM.  I was already in bed.  Actually, on top of the bed.  It was too hot for covers, and I didn't have the strength to drag any over what was left of me anyway.  They would fire off two or three whizzbangs and then wait about 20 minutes.  Then they would shoot one.  That went on for an hour or two, until they passed out I am assuming.
I mentioned the cannon salutes.  For a couple of years, I thought they were throwing dynamite down an old well or something.  The ground vibrated from this thing.  A guy moved in across the road and he told me of his first 8 O'Clock wake-up call.  It happened while, in his words, he was on the pot.
My pal Buck had one of these cannons too.  He didn't bother shooting the usual black powder with newspaper wads in it.  He had zinc balls that would fit the bore of this thing.  Something around two inch diameter.  Could have been a little less.  They would, by actual test, zip through an old water heater like it was made of paper.  Then bounce over the hill.  Cutting out tree limbs.  His neighbors hated him too.  Last I saw the ugly thing was still parked in his shop.
I almost forgot.  Today marks the two year anniversary of my time here on the site.  Best wishes.  Gary

Thanks for the bonhomie and such, fellows.  If I hadn't wasted my time here, I would have probably wasted it doing something else.  The friends are what make this place great.  I haven't had any reason to count digits lately.  I don't do any fireworks, and the last time a multi tool got me was a Wenger that pierced a pinkie.  I put some stuff on it.  Don't want to get Wenger Finger.  Brrrr.
Best wishes.  Gary

I had been thinking about getting one for a few years. Last Christmas my wife gave me this one.

Day 4

I had been thinking about getting one for a few years. Last Christmas my wife gave me this one.

I have the Moonshiner. Stays on my belt when I'm in the woods, and basically serves as a bolo-type  knife that serves as both a heavy machete and light hatchet. It has taken a beating and just continues on working. It's survived strikes with fences and rocks.

Keep meaning on trying a smaller, more EDC-friendly Condor fixed blade. The way they handle their 1075 is just plain amazing.

Day 4:

More messing around with the 3D printer. Bijou and Recruit on duty today. I've had at least two or three Recruits over the years. Kinda just didn't  get used to them. Bought one new, gave it away. Got this one (used) in a lot, and gave it to my Granddad. Got a third, broke the scales, swapped them to nylon off a Waiter, and gave that one away too. Eventually traded back for this one, and I have to admit, why have I not liked it? It's fairly light being 84mm, and comfortable due to no back tools. I would love to have a Cadet II--but I'm probably better off modding one. Missed out on a cheap one a few years ago in a huge $100+ lot I couldn't afford.

Upscaling the horse and flipping it over has fixed the broken legs, but because I avoided supports, the legs ended up a little warped.  I think back to feet on the ground will still work well, and the larger legs should mean it's easier to remove from the support material.

Printed all my scrapers and pry tools, instead of trying to find the plastic putty knives, trim tools, and spudgers I've got all over the place.

The Vise Grips actually work. I decided to try them as my first print-in-place project, and I am honestly surprised given I have an entry-level printer. I chose a  version with loose tolerances (intended for .3--I used .25), and they're a little loose. I had thought they would just print solid and that's it. Yet, they work perfectly and seem durable for semi-hollow PET-G plastic. May try another with the tighter tolerances. These are gonna be really handy for non-marring work. Will try to do some standard pliers as well for my box.

I'm seeing  a few multitools as well. I doubt they'd work very well, but I am currently printing off a "print in place" credit card tool with pliers.

Day 4

Happy 4th of July! I was super busy today so I carried my Platy and the Dacian. I really forgot how much I truly enjoy the Dacian. I don't carry fixed blades nearly enough and this one hits a sweet spot for me.   [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I agree with Gary, this is one of the most varied challenges I've seen. Keep it coming awl.

Day 4

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I forgot to give you all a Nessmuk quote yesterday, so here's a make up. "Go light; the lighter the better, so that you have the simplest material for health, comfort and enjoyment." This is, in my mind, the needle to thread. Nessmuk wasn't an ultralight camper (or he wouldn't carry 2 full sized knives AND a hatchet). He wants to minimize his load and simplify, but only so far as he can without making himself uncomfortable.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Went canoeing with my wife today. We had a pretty good time. Here's (some of) what Nessmuk had to say about canoes:

Quote
In spite of the disparaging remark that "a canoe is a poor man's yacht." The canoe editor of Forest and Stream pertinently says, "we may as properly call a bicycle 'the poor man's express train.'" But, suppose it is the poor man's yacht? Are we to be debarred from aquatic sports because we are not rich? And are we such weak flunkies as to be ashamed of poverty? Or to attempt shams and subterfuges to hide it?

Don't be a weak flunky! Go enjoy your poor self!
