Hey Barry, do you ever wipe down that nice black Gerber with oil?  If you do, does the color come off?  Blackening stainless steel works a little weird sometimes.  I heard something about it coming off.  Best wishes.  G

Day 07

The ubiquitous Victorinox Classic. I have one of these (or a Rambler) on every set of keys so I always have scissors and a backup knife no matter what else I might be carrying.  I don't believe you can ever have too many.

Day 7

Removed the Bond to make my pocket a little lighter today and rearranged my Platy. Decided to carry the Vosteed RSKaos today. On Tiktok I'm trying to do a new knife everyday so that trend will follow on here I'm sure.

I just tried on the one in the picture, and nothing.  It's an older one, so it's seen a lot of wiping down prior to me.

Might be more of a thing with a brand new tool.  Someone said their new black Leatherman left schmutz on his hands.  Who knows?  Might have been some kind of preservative.  The black looks good on your Gerber.  Best wishes.  G

Day6
Anything goes so I'm showing off my latest free tool trash find....
A little Harbor Freight 5speed drill press w/ upgraded keyless chuck.

I used to be a lot of things, and someday will again.
But for now I'm just a lost jack of trades with neither mastery nor home. ~NoaIsumi

I feel like Gerber's BO is "stickier" than most. Not sure what the difference is in how they apply it.

Day 7

Decided foam was close enough to wood to bring out the sheepsfoot. We live in a converted church with two story windows. Two story windows with window ACs mounted just above floor level on the second floor. That means that just as much (if not more) cooling goes to the first floor dining room than our bedroom. My FIL gave me this hunk of styrofoam, which I cut approximately to fit (nothing in a house this old is straight). A towel helps to fill in the little gaps. It makes a huge difference (and awlso reduces the noise coming from the dining room/kitchen to bedroom in the mornings). We're hoping to get the window units out for minisplits sooner rather than later, but this is a great temporary solution. Should probably just put a little shelf there.

And your Nessmuk for the day:

Quote
And don't neglect to take what sailors call a "ditty-bag." This may be a little sack of chamois leather about 4 inches wide by 6 inches in length. [...] three darning needles and a few common sewing needles; a dozen buttons; sewing silk; thread, and a small ball of strong yarn for darning socks; sticking salve; a bit of shoemaker's wax; beeswax;[...]The ditty-bag weighs, with contents, 2½ ounces; and it goes in a small buckskin bullet pouch, which I wear almost as constantly as my hat. The pouch has a sheath strongly sewed on the back side of it, where the light hunting knife is always at hand[...] I can always go down into that pouch for a water-proof match safe

Three things jump out here:

1. Nessmuk clearly knew how to sew. Definitely a wilderness skill that we don't think of as a stereotypical "mountain man" one, but important one the less.

2. He wore his ditty bag as a hat. You're all out there like morons with your boonies when you could be using a head purse. WITH A KNIFE IN IT!

3. He used matches. I thought of those as a much more recent invention, but apparently modern "safety" matches are nearly 200 years old, and it looks like "strike anywhere" style ones may have been even older. You learn something new every day.

Day 06
Celebrating things that still work for me.  A Gerber Diesel and a 1989 (I think ) Sony Walkman.

AM/FM AND tape? I may have to look for one of those at the flea market. I still have my RCA tape player/recorder I used in school (mostly piano lessons) from Radio Shack, and it still works, aside from a cover that doesn't like to stay shut.

Day 6:

Got the second set of supports printed last night, then had  to re-do them again this morning due to running out of filament. D'Oh!!!

At least I got the hinges done right.

Day 7:

Spool  holder and bottom set of cladding done, now onto the top surround. Each of those will take around six hours to print, so it looks like another day.  I also pressed the magnets into their supports, and glued them into place.  In addition, I bought 3/4 of the supplies I needed at my local combined Family Dollar/Dollar Tree. I did have to order a new set of craft knife blades, a pin-vise style drill (aka "tip drill"--as my old one was from a welding shop, and designed for cleaning torch tips), and deburring tool were bought from Amazon.

Each of the surrounds take about 100-150 grams of filament, so I ordered some more PET-G. PET-G was what Flashforge recommended for the enclosure, though I have PLA on backup for the hobby stuff until that arrives.  Honestly, I kind of prefer PET-G for the stuff I'm printing, and so do quite a lot of others it seems. I've done lots of stuff at varying levels of detail and settings, and unless I did something dumb, it came out great. From what I've seen, PET-G can be used for basically anything you'd typically use PLA for. Not sure about high-detail applications, however.

The Squirt EL may not be an EDC, but it tends to always be handy when I'm doing hobby projects. It's been kept in the box for trains, slot cars, RC, and now 3D printing since I bought it secondhand several years back. Always wanted one as a kid, but couldn't afford $30. About a decade later, I could for this one in like-new shape. Typically though, they ain't cheap...

No tape player. This one is just an AM/FM player.  I store it without batteries, but when I put batteries in it works like it was new.

Day 8 - this is my largest SAK  :climber:
Funny thing (and a bit sad) in the town that I grew up in we had a hardwear store and they had this exact one in their window when I was a kid and I always loved to watch it, and when they closed down a few years ago after over 100 years in business I went in and asked about it. I gave them a bid and after a few days they gave me a call and said that if I still wanted it I could come by and pick it up

DAY 7

A day behind, as life and work gets in the way of fun.

I have been thinking about really thinning out the collection, and the consideration of what I actually need keeps popping up....for me the charge and surge leatherman tools are right up there, but with a little adaption the MUT is possibly the best tool for me.

So the MUT and Carothers Basic 5 on the belt.

Weird sidewalk weed.  Looks like a crochet doily.  Probably poisonous or tries to bite you on the ankle as you walk by.  Happens all the time in the movies.  Best wishes.  G

Purty.  Are you going to do a sheepdog post, Barry?  Pets are part of the MTo milieux.  The edge on my DIY was rolled when I got it.  Didn't take much to get it back in shape.  The Opinel stainless steel cuts well.  Best wishes.  G

P.S. I figured out the ugly weed is spurge.  Yes it is toxic.  Don't know if it attacks passers-by.

I find the original Supertool to be a convenient carry, like a compact full-size tool (compared to the Surge and ST300).

Excellent pics, everyone.  This anything goes challenge is fun.
I said, yesterday, that I had my PowerPint out to help with a paracord project.  Turns out that I went in another direction and didn't need the pliers.  But here's the end result.   Just need to add the cart key and I'll be good.
