I enjoyed watching your video about the new Leatherman folder.  It looks good in your post too.  Not my kind of thing, of course.  I liked how you stayed with the facts in your video and told it like you saw it.  Best wishes.  G

Day 11

I went to a mining museum. Here is a display of carbide lamps which attach to the miner's hard hat. I have one of these at home. When I was younger I did some cave exploring with some old guys who still used these. They work great, but you have to be careful that you don't point it at your rope especially when you are dangling from it!

The second photo didn't come out too well, but I was holding my Bic lighter in front of a Hercules powder box and blasting caps.

I haven't smoked in 25+ years but I still carry a lighter everyday, all the time.

You know, Barry.  I actually have a photo of a BigFoot track.  I found it as I was engaged in an outdoor activity.  I am a little reluctant to post the thing.  Let me think about it.  Best wishes.  G

I was feeling a bit nostalgic about my old Stockman carry, today.  I switched over to the Cattleman's Jack  back in early March before we went on vacation.

Day 11

My son and I took a short trip this afternoon to The Museum of Flight at Boeing Field in Seattle. They had an exhibit lead by a South African artist Ralph Ziman that transforms a MiG-21 fighter jet into a work of art. The aircraft is covered by tiny multicolored glass beads. The exhibit is truly impressive and we were so glad we got the opportunity to see it.

The Peanut join us in our visit.

The beaded MIG next to the first 747.

Good luck, Dave. We're all pulling for you.

JonesE, that's pretty cool. We were out in Seattle last summer, but we didn't get to that museum. Next time for sure!

Pitcarver, happy to see another stockman.

Day 11

Was wandering around at camp when I saw this:

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

"That's a nice big piece of dead wood," I said to myself. A good excuse to try out the axe. I took a file and stone to one side to get it decent sharp, drug the piece out to the site and decided to test my edge vs the factory one.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The factory "edge" can only be called so fairly generously. It's more like hitting the wood with a wedge shaped hammer.

I switched to my edge, but didn't get any pics since it was so dry and eaten up that it basically exploded after a couple hits. Final results (probably about 20 whacks total):

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Will keep one edge factory and test more later, but was a good enough first go. Tried to work on a feather stick, and remembered that I was bad at them, even when I was in Scouts and did them semi-regularly. I awlways wind up just slicing off the "feather". Any tips?

Nessmuk makeup from yesterday: "A rope is only as strong as its weakest part." Never heard that version before. Kind of interesting how sayings change over time.

Nessmuk of the day:

Quote
Notably and preferably with the fly if that might be. If not, then with worms, grubs, minnows, grasshoppers, crickets, or any sort of doodle bug their highnesses might affect. When a plump, two-pound trout refuses to eat a tinseled, feathered fraud, I am not the man to refuse him something more edible.

Stay humble, team.

Day 9:

Opened more filament. Didn't realize I'd be so into 3D printing. The enclosure took a ton of PETG, however--and I likely used over half a roll for the first stuff I printed.

Recently traded a small Kobalt tool I bought new last year for this old Renegade. I believe Renegade was Walmart's fishing store brand, and this was the little brother to the Carolina Knife and Tool import version of Mr. Pinchy with fishing pliers.  I decided to retire my Squirt P4, and I'm honestly surprised at how decent of a little tool it is.

Day 10:

Forgot my phone yesterday.

Got some items in from Wurth, (mostly sharp stuff), and I really liked the look of their utility knife with bit driver. Paid a few extra bucks to get the Wurth bits and sheath.

All metal with a nice grippy powder-coat (which feels nice--though I typically prefer plastic--this is tougher), great build quality, and it can be carried with a bit in the handle. It replaced the Klein Flickblade that just felt cheap.

MINI CHALLENGE TIME
Yes, it's time for a mini challenge.  For Monday's post everyone participating should post 'Fire and Light'.  Post your usual tools if you wish, but include something to make a fire (matches, Zippo, Bic, flint and steel, whatever) and something to make light (lantern, candle, flashlight, etc.)  One item of each is sufficient.  Points will be given.  5 points for a completed entry.  2 points for a partial entry.  l bonus point if any item is red or blue in color.
Points can't be redeemed anywhere for anything.  The prestige of point accumulation should be sufficient anyway, right.  Looking forward to seeing everyones entries on Monday.  Best wishes.  G

Day 12

My first set of screw drivers, from Muji.  probably got it in my teenage. It is still around and my wife likes it more than my other screw drivers which she thinks are complicated. The philips are a bit worn but sufficient for her daily needs.

Gave it a little wipe today.

@Kaevin - Nice set of screwdrivers.  I had some cheapy ones when I was a kid that came in a little plastic tool box looking case.  They were not very well made.

Day 12

Dreamed that I was camping with friend BPRoberts.  He had a camp near a large river, but it wasn't really out in the wilds.  Roads and buildings nearby.  We had both turned in for the night when I saw something strange.  It was horses.  I poked BP and said for him to look.  There was a large flat-topped building with horses on the roof.  Not real horses, just statues.
Opinel with a lunchbox sized carton of Goldfish.  Best wishes.  G

Day 11
I separated a smaller branch from a piece of Leopard Tree (aka Brazilwood) using the very capable Swisstool saw. I had to cut around the branch, since the tree was newly cut and the saw kept binding. Still,it was satisfying.

Gary, that actually sounds a lot like the last camp site I was at. Houses across the street, just enough woods to be semi private, river band a couple yards away.  No horse statues though.
