Day 1

I got the mighty peanut with me today. Feels good to carry this one again. It has been about five years since it last saw the light of day.

Day 1

Carrying a bit of gear with me today. MKM Yipper, Leatherman Bond, Lynch All Access Pry, Olight i3T IOS and RITR bolt action pen/Mico pad. I noticed I'm missing my OKnife Otacle D1 so I'll have go throw that back in there. Other object is my medicine fob and Loops earplugs.

July kinda slipped up on me, today.

After carrying around Large Stockman knives around for a long time I went with a large Jack pattern.  Really like the equal end pattern.

Day 1
The MTO anniversary month coincides with my entrance to this plane of existence  :D
I'll try to post a few of my firsts in the multitool world (well, reasonable facsimiles thereof).
My first SAK was a Classic, which was given to me by cousin maybe in 86 or 87.
This is my second Classic, makes me wonder why I didnt get more. The month just kicked off  :D

Some cool stuff showing so far. I'm posting quick from a Denny's, as we're in the middle of a (not quite Nessmuk tier) adventure.

My wife and I have spent the last couple days swinging through upstate PA and into NY to visit GEC, KA-BAR, Case, and a couple indie shops. Weather rolled in worse than expected, and we had to find an alternate camp site. After a couple tries, we got a great little riverside spot at a new campground that's just getting up and running (running water yet). We got the tent up just before dark, and shot back out to Denny's to wash up and grab a snack (remember, smooth it, don't rough it).

For the Nessmuk challenge I need to lock in an axe, fixed blade, and folder. I showed off the axe I found yesterday, and it's just about a perfect match for the one in the book, we'll see how it performs.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

For the fixed blade, I was about 70% sure on this Boxer Blades MUK. It's a little heftier than I think I need, but again, it's such a close match for the one in the book. (Though I do suspect Nessmuk would also say it's a bit on the big and "murderous" side).

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I hemmed and hawed a lot on the folder. The book knife is something like a canoe with a clip and probably a pen. That's not a super common pattern, and not really to my tastes, so I'm taking some liberty here. I thought about a big ol' folding hunter, after enjoying carrying one briefly last month, but two "big" knives felt impractical. I definitely wanted something multiblade (if I only get to carry two knives, and I'm supposed to use them for camping chores, food prep, etc. I need as much as I can get), and as much as I want to carry my new Johnny on the Spot, I felt like I should keep it old school. I have a Case Trapper that needs a little love, but would be carriable. And then we swung through the Case/Zippo museum today.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
(Excuse the terrible picture)

I carried the a 47 Stockman for my first trad folder challenge, and I loved it. I decided stepping up in size a bit from the Trapper might be helpful around camp, and three blades gives me one more option if I need it.

I'll definitely miss having a multi, and I think a "modernized" Nessmuk list would be wise to include one (I think he'd be happy with a basic scout knife), but I'm gonna try to keep it traditional. More updates and pics tomorrow, but a little adventure in getting camp up to start the month feels like a perfect way to start the challenge.

Quote
WITH a large majority of prospective tourists and outers, "camping out" is a leading factor in the summer vacation. And during the long winter months they are prone to collect in little knots and talk much of camps, fishing, hunting and "roughing it." The last phrase is very popular and always cropping out in the talks on matters pertaining to a vacation in the woods. I dislike the phrase. We do not go to the green woods and crystal waters to rough it, we go to smooth it. We get it rough enough at home; in towns and cities; in shops, offices, stores, banks anywhere that we may be placed—with the necessity always present of being on time and up to our work; of providing for the dependent ones; of keeping up, catching up, or getting left. "Alas for the lifelong battle, whose bravest slogan is bread.[...]to those of the world's workers who go, or would like to go, every summer to the woods. And to these I would say, don't rough it; make it as smooth, as restful and pleasurable as you can."

Get out there and "smooth it" if you can, awl. My goal is to spend at least one night out every week this month.

Nice pix everyone.  And I am liking the Nessmuk saga.  Finally some rain here.  I went outside and saw continuous circling of mosquitos around the little water puddles.  That took some of the happy, happy out of the observation.  Best wishes.  G

Day 1

Since I'm also doing The Dean51 Traditional Challenge, you'll be seeing more traditionals from me this time around.  Here's my Eye brand mini canoe with my trusty Olight.  The previous owner did a number on the blades but I still like it.  I opted out of trying to reshape the blade for fear of losing more metal.

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

Day 1:

The Case 6265 is a '76, and it was, for many years, my great-uncle's favorite deer hunting knife.

Colonial electrician--first or second knife I  ever had. I think it was given to me alongside a 34OT.

Klein hawkbill--Moki-made, the current iteration of Klein hawkbill that I carry.

Unpacked and installed a cheap mini fridge/freezer and microwave for the basement "man cave" I'm working on.

Day 2

I hate to mow when it is hot and has been dry for some time.  Decided to do it anyway yestiddy.  Hooked up my charger to the mower.  Hot and clear as a bell.  Deer barked a warning at me from the woods.  Could have been a greeting.  Maybe I had done so little work outside they thought I was dead.  Forty minutes later it started getting dark.  Uh oh.  I ran out and unhooked the charger.  Rain.  About five minutes of light drizzle.  Just enough to wet the grass.
That was about 3:30 PM.  Decided to wait until 6PM and try again.  Postponed that until 7PM.  Got antsy about 6:30 and walked out to crank the Cub.  First rain drops hit me on the back step.  Decided to call off the mowing.  I heard a big WHOOSH about 8PM and here it came.  A deluge.
I will try it all again today as soon as the grass dries out.  Maybe about 4PM?  A battery charger photo from yestiddy.  With a No. 9 Opinel.
Best wishes.  G

I think there should be a law.  Every male individdle adult should own an Opinel.  And carry it.  It should be a No. 7 with colored handles.  You would get to choose the color.  After all, this isn't a dictatorship.  Gals could carry any size Opi they wish as long as it is a No. 3 on a neck chain. Conscientious objectors would wear a sign and be subject to finger pointing and chanting.
This July 4th will mark the 2 year anniversary of yours truly on this site.  There will be fireworks and parades.  Not for me specifically.  I'm not wacko enough to think that.  Feel free to stop by and say hello.  Park behind my mailbox and walk up.  Bring a covered dish.  If something large and hairy snuffles out from the bushes, don't stand still or wave your arms and yell.   Throw down the food and run.  Bears generally just want the eats.
Best wishes.  Gary

We got our mowing done a couple of days ago, which means it's coming up again soon

Day 2: My son, Noah, found this handy tool when he was fishing and gave it to my wife.  It's got a bottle opener, wire strippers, screw drivers and decent scissors.

Opi is definitely an every collection needs one kind of knife. Cheap and practical enough that no one should have any complaints about it. I have and enjoy the 7 DIY, but think most people should start with a wood 7-9 (whichever feels good in their hand). I'll be modern and let you take an INOX if you want.

Wife survived her first night of camping without water, power hookups, etc. I'm happy for her. She never went camping before we met 5ish years ago, and we've always stayed at "modern" camp sites.

Happy early anniversary, Gary.
I guess I'll be a law breaker though.  I like an Opinel number 6, with the standard birch handle.

I mentioned, elsewhere, that I had ordered a Gerber multitool to leave out in the cart shed.  Just so happens that I still had pics of the offending piece that I received (and promptly returned).
So, for day 2, I have this ,  what was only out of the box long enough to get pics to send back.

Gerber MP600 carbide. My first pliers-based MT was the original version of this, over 25 years ago. I carried it for years. Dunno what ever happened to it once I replaced it in my EDC with my Swisstool, but I ran across this one cheap at a flea market. I think I gave $5 for it.
