When I hear of judging at a county fair, all I can think of is James Herriot picking the goldfish belonging to the Squire's son as the best pet.  The whole town stopped talking to him.  Best wishes.  G

Brilliant, honestly didn't realise 'all creatures great and small' was popular across the pond!!!

.....your statement and my wife showing the children to floss (dance move), has made my day

Gerber MP600 carbide. My first pliers-based MT was the original version of this, over 25 years ago. I carried it for years. Dunno what ever happened to it once I replaced it in my EDC with my Swisstool, but I ran across this one cheap at a flea market. I think I gave $5 for it.

Great deal for a nice tool.

Day 2

Awlright, finally getting the group shot going.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The Case has the usual "good enough" Case edge, and will spend a few minutes on the Sharpmaker later today. Anybody got any good axe related tips?

Did use the Case last night to open my wife's sleeping bag. I ordered them together last year and used mine, but this first time she needed hers.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

What're you blade roles on a multi-blade?  Mine are:

Clip: Clean, food, etc. Nice and slicey.

Spey: Dirty/package. Harder to break and/or stab contents.

Sheepsfoot: Whittling. Safer if the knife slips.

Almost forgot my Nessmuk quote of the day. Next time someone says you have too many knives, just remember:

"We all carry too many flies. Some of my friends have more than sixty dozen, and will never use a tenth of them."

As long as you have less than 720, or have carried at least a tenth of your collection, you're good!

That's a nice looking 'Muk. Good choice of a Stockman, too.   :like:
I use the clip pretty much the same way you do. The spey is kept super sharp and used for things that call for that. The sheepsfoot is my rough blade. I give it a steep angle on the edge and use it for opening packages, cutting wire and strapping (including steel strapping), reaming, and opening cans if I don't have my SAK or something else with a can opener. To me a short sheepsfoot blade is a multi tool in itself.

Day 2:

I finally decided to pull the trigger on the Flashforge Adventurer 5M as a bit of a drive to help me finally get the last of the crap out of the basement. I used the smaller blade to do some of the tighter cutting in  unpacking and maintenance.

It has taken me from lunchtime  until now to get things figured out. FIrst of all, getting it to work with my PC. I had to dig out an old Android smartphone to install Flashforge's app in order to sync it with my account and the PC software (I'm sure I could've probably figured out how to do it over the network...). Then load issues due to the loose PLA they included. Then adhesion issues. Then more loading issues as I put too much slack in my PET-G roll when loading it.  I bought PET-G as the company recommended it to print the structural elements for their enclosure kit. Accidentally bought two rolls, and my second roll of PLA isn't slated to arrive until tomorrow.

Once I got things figured out though (and made sure that I set the software to PET-G when preparing prints), it's a breeze. So far, I've printed a keyring, boat, and cube from the PLA and included folders.

PS: I just realized I grabbed the wrong TL-29 out of the roll--this one is an Imperial Tradesman from the '70s--has nearly the same marbled plastic handles. Given both Colonial and Imperial were in Providence, I wouldn't be surprised if they were using plastic from the same suppliers.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The first non-built-in print was a horse off Thingiverse. Need to glue the legs, as I got a little bit rough removing the supports due to bad tools (I tried it without supports, but the tiny hooves caused adhesion headaches). The flush cutters included are garbage ,and I couldn't find my Klein ones. I did have a craft knife, but the blade in it was dull from banging around in a drawer.

I plan to get some matte filament that is suitable for finer detail. Curious on what I should get that can be painted.

The old weight bench weights help to cut down on the shaking. Had to use a folding table until I could find hardware for a spare kitchen table I dragged out of the outbuilding--lost the baggie that included the hardware to bolt the legs on.

I will buy some Elmer's glue (these come with a special glue that's a liquid, but it's a pain to spread), painter's tape, some flash drives (as the PC software makes me log in constantly--and I forgot to copy the password off the old phone I used to set it up) a new craft knife (I keep losing X-Acto and knockoffs...), and another pair of flush cutters while I'm out tomorrow.

You can paint PLA pretty easily but you do need a primer base coat.  Superglue works well for gluing filament together.  You can use a brim to anchor the horse's hoofs down so you have better adhesion, however, you'll still need the supports for the belly of the horse.
May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

Some cool stuff showing so far. I'm posting quick from a Denny's, as we're in the middle of a (not quite Nessmuk tier) adventure.

My wife and I have spent the last couple days swinging through upstate PA and into NY to visit GEC, KA-BAR, Case, and a couple indie shops. Weather rolled in worse than expected, and we had to find an alternate camp site. After a couple tries, we got a great little riverside spot at a new campground that's just getting up and running (running water yet). We got the tent up just before dark, and shot back out to Denny's to wash up and grab a snack (remember, smooth it, don't rough it).

For the Nessmuk challenge I need to lock in an axe, fixed blade, and folder. I showed off the axe I found yesterday, and it's just about a perfect match for the one in the book, we'll see how it performs.

[ Quoting of attachment images from other messages is not allowed ]

For the fixed blade, I was about 70% sure on this Boxer Blades MUK. It's a little heftier than I think I need, but again, it's such a close match for the one in the book. (Though I do suspect Nessmuk would also say it's a bit on the big and "murderous" side).

[ Quoting of attachment images from other messages is not allowed ]

I hemmed and hawed a lot on the folder. The book knife is something like a canoe with a clip and probably a pen. That's not a super common pattern, and not really to my tastes, so I'm taking some liberty here. I thought about a big ol' folding hunter, after enjoying carrying one briefly last month, but two "big" knives felt impractical. I definitely wanted something multiblade (if I only get to carry two knives, and I'm supposed to use them for camping chores, food prep, etc. I need as much as I can get), and as much as I want to carry my new Johnny on the Spot, I felt like I should keep it old school. I have a Case Trapper that needs a little love, but would be carriable. And then we swung through the Case/Zippo museum today.

[ Quoting of attachment images from other messages is not allowed ]
(Excuse the terrible picture)

I carried the a 47 Stockman for my first trad folder challenge, and I loved it. I decided stepping up in size a bit from the Trapper might be helpful around camp, and three blades gives me one more option if I need it.

I'll definitely miss having a multi, and I think a "modernized" Nessmuk list would be wise to include one (I think he'd be happy with a basic scout knife), but I'm gonna try to keep it traditional. More updates and pics tomorrow, but a little adventure in getting camp up to start the month feels like a perfect way to start the challenge.

Get out there and "smooth it" if you can, awl. My goal is to spend at least one night out every week this month.

What a delightful concept for enjoying the great outdoors.

Day 2
When I decided to build my Pioneer X Farmer [the Farmer X wasn't built then],I searched online for info on the process, and stumbled across MTO. I posted a few pics of my build here [apologies in advance if this isn't allowed] - https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,80760.msg1957167.html#msg1957167
and here's my Pioneer X Farmer today

I think my next build will be adding a mag glass and Phillips to a Farmer X,maybe a file too. We'll see  :D

Day 3

No surprise.  I plan to opinel all month.  Yes, I did use Opinel as a verb.  The verb form isn't capitalized.  You might notice that the carbon (rusts for no reason at all) blade is still relatively spot free.  A few reasons for that.  One, I haven't used it much.  Two, I keep it wiped down every time I handle it.  Three, what spots it has picked up have been removed.
I don't like discoloration on blades.  Either natural or intentional.  Eventually it will reach that state, but I won't be the one to hurry the process along.
Mowed some yesterday.  The grass wasn't all that high, except where not having a weedwacker made that an issue.  I asked my old pal Hardin what he did for weedwhacking.  He said he owned all that equipment, but didn't use it.  "If the mower don't get it, then to smurf with it."  Words to live by.
Best wishes.  G

If I were starting a Nessmuk challenge today (I'm not), this might be my choice of tools. Old carpenter's hatchet ( I'm not big on double bit axes and much prefer to have a hammer), Case large Stockman in CV, Condor Nessmuk.

It only took 3 days for me to fully embrace the
[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]
aspect for this challenge.
Well, yesterday I shared photos of a multitool that I no longer have, but that's different.

I have officially doubled my number of Lego minifigs with the addition of the GrandpaGrumpy mini, who joins Emmett in my vast collection.  I saw where you could customize a minifig so I went about with the process.
Had to have a vest. ✓
Beard. ✓
Hat. ✓
I chose a minifig head with a grey beard, but the Boss Lady didn't like it.  X
Optional tool I chose was a sword.  X. Might need to trim it down to make it a machete. (That's an idea... )

After visiting the eBay place I decided that mini-me
Needed some more stuff.  (Just like big-me.)
Different beard. ✓
Bottle, empty. ✓
Fishing pole. ✓
Fish.  Duh.  ✓
I did add a couple more hats in different colors.  ✓
And a Lego camera to record evidence of his adventures.  ✓
And as a finisher, a Lego Ka-bar. ✓

Yes, Lego is legit for the challenge.  We have seen a backpack already and a belt type pack.  I remember doing a cooler last year.  I had decided to either turn the Anniversary challenge into a SAK Stack, Spartan, or Opinel badge attempt.  I wanted an Opinel badge last year, but the only Opi I had at that time was one I made myself.  Yes, it was fairly pitiful.
There is still lots of room for creativity in this one.  So far, no watches.  I liked the Lego Grouch.  The additional Nessmuk entry was nice too.  Might be the first Condor on the site?  If I can borrow enough money somewhere, I might just put in a weedwacker post for this month's challenge.  Hmmm?   Best wishes.  G

Went to a graduation and pinning ceremony this morning.  Very proud of the whole class, of course, but I was there for the son of a friend I've known since we were 13 years old.  I met the young man, now a probationary firefighter, when he was just a day old in the hospital.

Flower photos are always good, Echo.  Probably be a lot of fireworks.  One of the neighbors used to let off a cannon every July 4th.  Newcomers often called emergency numbers so the fire department or whatever could fish out the smoking remains of the unfortunate explosion.  Finally, someone must have gotten the idea that blasting that thing was smurfing off the neighborhood.  Best wishes.  G
