Leatherman Factory Brushed Finish?
on: June 07, 2025, 07:26:54 PM
Hey all! Just picked up a 1999 Crunch for a great price due to a laser etched logo.

Wondering if anyone knows what factory brushed finish Leatherman uses. Is it scotch brite? Polish? maybe a satin belt finish? Trying to match factor the best I can.

Hi 4Fingerjon, I would tape of around the laser each with painters tape. Then Sand out the laser etch. Once done remove the tape then use a wire brush to match the grain direction on the handle.

Wire brush is a good idea. I have a mild brass wheel for my rotary tool, i'll try that first! Thanks!

I have removed a couple etchings on PSTs.

I used 400 & 600 Roy Emory cloth.

Do not work the cloth the length of he handle, as very likely your finish is top edge to bottom edge.

Just work your Emory edge to edge by hand.

Also, the one of the grits will match the finish on the tool.

I did try my rotary tool (dremil) and turns to fast and is very easy to go deeper than desired quickly.

Brass wil be much softer than the stainless and can discolor the Stainless unless a compound is used to polish.

Slow and steady.

Also, I found some company logos are neat, one I removed, I wish I kept😯

Ps: Welcome and congratulations on the CRUNCH.

BEFORE and AFTER pictures are kind of expected😎

Thank you! I ended up using 800 grit sandpaper, then red scotch brite to finish it off. It turned out pretty good in my opinion! I nay go back and try emory cloth as I think it could use a bit more texture.

The tool is currently in the ultrasonic but Ill grab some photos of it after and make a new thread.

In the sticky area on the main Leatherman page is the Leatherman Clubs thread. You can scroll down and find the one for the Leatherman Crunch. Feel free to join the club by showing photos there.

I used electric sharpener(motor) with vulcanite(?) wheel. I don't know what vulcanite called in English, maybe rubber or hard rubber.
The main thing is not to rush and not to press too hard. Even laser engravings come off.
A five-minute job, it takes longer to get the motor out of the box :)

The motor is ordinary, my father took mine on the frame, gave me his homemade one. I have many leatherman tools and I can't remember which one I removed the engraving from.

This is the motor with the vulcanite wheel. It works great on both steel and wood
