Well, I think it looks like a worthy successor to the Charge G10. And Wave Plus. Are we going to be loosing the Titanium scales from the Charge TTi?  I am good with loosing the serrated blade to gain upgrades scissors like the Suge. I am sorry, but I still don’t get the point of having powdered high end blade steel in a Multitool. 420HC works very well with its easy sharpening.

According to the original rumors (that appear to be legitimate now), there will be several versions of the Wave.  The lower-end Wave will likely keep the 420HC blade.  The Wave "Alpha" is supposed to be the high-end Wave which is really what the Charge is now.

Ok, so the Charge name is going away. I guess Leatherman feels that the Charge name is confusing potential customers and wants to simplify the wave series. I am glad you stated the Wave will have an entry level model. My first real Multitool was the first generation wave back in 98.

If those pics are real, it’s absolutely the tool that I have been waiting years for them to make.

In my view, it is marketing and geared toward the pocket jewelry purchaser.  You will not be seeing these on the job site, largely because The Workin' Man doesn't want to abuse and lose a $275 MT.

Subject to more data and less speculating on my part :ahhh, the G10 Wave pictured is not that much different than the OG Supertool and Wave.  At least in terms of overall function.  Plier, knife, drivers, etc.

It is somewhat akin to Glock introducing a new generation every few years, where it recycles "features" like finger grooves, grip pattern or rifling that it previously implemented and removed.  Its always basically the same Glock, with superficial tweaks.  My Gen5 G17 is almost indistinguishable from my Gen 2.  Same with Leatherman.  Superficial tweaks to the same basic MT that has been around for 30 years.

But Leatherman, Glock et al., have to do this to (appear to) shake up the market, just as your local supermarket completely rearranges the interior layout from time to time.  They do it because it works, though the food (or the basic Glock or MT) remains the same.

It’s supposed to be $199.

Do people in the trades even use Leathermans that much?  I don't think I have seen a carpenter, electrician, plumber, or other tradesman that has worked on my house carry a multitool.  All of the people I see carrying them are outdoor hobbyists (campers, fishermen, etc) and homeowners.

No one I know of outside of folks here at MTo and related communities in the trades actually use a MT on site.  I have a friend back home occasionally uses a Rebar. My friends across a couple of armed services branches all have MUTs but I don’t think anyone has actually used theirs aside from occasional pliers usage.  My father in law would definitely use one in his shop but has said he would likely just lose it.

The only example I can think of consistent use is facilities folks at the universities I’ve worked. They all for the most part have had older Supertools that always looked abused and saw them in use when they’d come by my office or lab.

Now that said, every farmer I know has a leatherman. They would never buy a Wave Alpha or Arc but do sure love a Rebar or Supertool.  As far as I know none of those guys are multitool enthusiasts.

I'm sure  we've had several discussions here in the past about maintenance guys in factories (and maybe other buildings) always carrying a multitool. So not your regular 'single-skilled' tradie by profession such as a plumber, electrician, builder etc.
But the guy who does do lots of practical 'fix-it' of work in his place of work.

The discussions were along the lines of:
"I always have my MT with me as a wander around the plant, and if something comes up I can fix it immediately, and not have to go back to my workshop to get my full set of tools"

Yeah, I can see that maintenance guys would prefer less expensive tools.  On my end, the DIY homeowners and outdoor hobbyists I know wouldn't mind dropping $200-$300 on a premium tool.  Honestly, $300 isn't very much in the grand scheme of things.  That's about the same as taking my family to a sit down restaurant for dinner just twice.  Sure, I would rather pay less, but $300 for a multitool that will last a lifetime seems reasonable to me.

I think I probably have the same mindset at home, the farm, or in the lab about carrying a MT for the quick fix.  Honestly my Spirit or Wave do a great job I don’t need much more.

It’s hard for me to pay out a price of the $200+ MTs.  They’re probably worth it just too expensive for my blood…Also, adjusting for inflation from 80s-90s Leatherman prices the Wave and Surge I believe are comparable. I think there was some discussion of that periodically here.  So $200-300 isn’t that bad for a premium product in the current market.

Yeah, most of the maintenance guys I know carry a multi, and I'd say Leatherman are most common. Nothing fancier than a Supertool though.

On topic, I would trade the saw for an awl, it's the main reason I carry a Curl over the Wave.

Tradesman here  I have used and carried MTs for a number of years now but it is true you don't see many in the trades carrying them  :D for those not knowing I am a mason/bricklayer by trade

I love the look of the new Wave :salute: :like: but do wished they had kept the hole over the thumb stud but that is just apples to oranges :dunno: :D I would also say that they surely kept the way you attach a pocket clip the same on them :ahhh guess we will see in the near future :salute:

For everyone looking at the price, keep in mind that the Reddit poster who originally put out the information on the Alpha said that there would also be an update of the regular Wave.  So that’s a real possibility.

:salute: poncho you are the trendsetter amongst tradesmen with your charge (I think?) and executive carry . No sarcasm intended either I think a lot of guys would find a benefit to having one rather than not having one when it’s useful.  But like I was saying outside this community I don’t see a lot of guys carrying them.  I know Adam5 has modded and gifted some to his apprentices before getting others into it.   :hatsoff:

On a side note I had to text my electrician that he forgot a tool at our house months ago I just found in the attic I asked if he’s ever carried a MT, and ge has a Wave now! I might see if he’d like one of the spare Vic Electricians I have.  He’s a great dude and now he’s also in our camp!

Don’t get me wrong I absolutely love the scissors and awl added. Like genevabuck said if the regular Wave gets tje updated toolset  it’s very likely I’ll get one.  The outside larger scissors and awl really should’ve been on the wave when it was updated with the bit driver.

I saw this ad on instagram, and it made me laugh because of all of the talk about Leatherman making fixed blade knives. Pretty creative 😆

I wonder if the final product will look a little different?  I find it odd that LEATHERMAN isn’t stamped into the handles. Nor does it say WAVE anywhere.

I was watching a Leatherman video released a few days ago and it shows a glimpse of a Wave Alpha.  The video is about a minute long and you catch the tool at about 40 seconds. The video is built different.

I  saw it was a new video and clicked on it.  When that part of the video popped up the blade shape is what caught my attention and then when I backed it up and froze it a couple of times I could see the scissors.  So it looks like the leaked photos were pretty close.

Out of all the fixed blades the cooking knife  appealed to me the most. I don’t  do much camping or bushcraft chores  but I could use it as a strictly kitchen knife and  really get my moneys worth out of it.
