The Bark River Essential is definitely on my radar.  Surprised you didn't hold out until you found one in purple.

Day 16

Of the three fixed blades I'll show in this challenge, the Garberg is the only one that lacks jimping on the spine. That would be a desirable feature, as I tend to place my thumb on the spine quite often.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Before I bought the Garberg, I did a little reading up on it. One review said that users with smaller hands might find the overmolded handle to be undesirable. I have no issues with it, and it has a good feel to it.

Do you slice the kiwi in half and eat the flesh with a spoon?

Or, into slices and trim the skin from the edges.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Usually the second, but once they get really ripe the first is more practical.

CS Roach Belly knife.  I have had this for quite some time, it came with the older nylon fabric sheath.  The handle shape, and the blade shape, really work for me.

I have noticed that Buck is very often a miss on their sheaths.   Their nylon sheaths seem more as an after thought and making a complete quality package.

Bucks a great knife yet so much detail lack in the complimenting sheath.

I agree. The nylon sheaths supplied with many Bucks and the cheaper brands are basically blade covers so you can safely throw your knife in a pack.  They are really awful though if you want to actually belt carry.  You should get better from a premium brand such as Buck.  I like leather, Loveless style sheaths for most of my knives and have replaced most of the nylon sheaths that came with them.  Something like this one on Amazon is a tremendous improvement, but make sure you get the right size for your knife.

It won't be seen here, as it's outside the scope of this challenge, but my Case 3137 has marks on its blade from cutting a kiwi. They make for a pretty nifty patina.

I like the knife, but the sheath sort of ruins it for me.
I can see why. They look to have really built that sheath down to a price. That's one reason I wish more manufacturers offered "just the knife" (and I'm not upset by Leatherman making their sheaths optional extras).

You should get better from a premium brand such as Buck.

The Garberg took its turn with the paracord today, and it did a commendable job.

You did right by me, suggesting a very similar sheath for a leather option for my ESEE AGK, instead of the kydex supply option.

That is funny because there was one in purple that I did eye, but it just did not  call to me the way this one did.  My other Essential does have purple and green handle, just isn’t Magnacut, it is CPM-154, which still is a quality steel.

:iagree: on top of the poor quality, they don’t even offer left-handed sheaths.  So for me including it is a waste.

Day 17
Used a Survival knife from CountyComm that was supposedly commissioned for the US Coast Guard.

It is a nice knife, especially for less than $20.  Although I do wish the sheath was ambidextrous.  Because it isn’t left handed I keep it in my emergency bag.

Here it is next to the Mora Kansbol

@TexasAKM - That's a neat looking pipe.  Where did you pick it up from?

Work kicked my butt this week so I'm playing catch up.

Day 16 - catch up

Just some light package duty.  Opened up a new aquarium lid for my son and a package of batteries.

The AGK with the kydex below and the very nice leather sheath Alan suggested.   Fits and is retained perfectly.

And speaking of sheaths yesterday.  Thought I would share my favorites, and you may notice a theme to my preference.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Center is a Buck 684, comes with a nylon sheath, but it fits perfectly in the Buck 113 leather sheath, which is one Buck does well by.

The surpriced sheath was the Queen Bird & Trout. The sheath may costs more than the knife, a BOGO combo purchase.  Winterbottom bone handle and 440C steel.

I awlways worry about getting a good fit on aftermarket sheaths. I'm worried I'll reach for the knife one day and find it poking through into my leg or something.

Cool action shot Sherry.

Day 17

Razel opened a Bear Jaws Sportsman. Wanted something with outside opening tools, but a bit smaller/lighter than the Swisstool/Spirit. Only just got it, but I like it so far. I might pick up some of the other variants for cheap and swap some tools around.

If I'm looking at it right I can run: Blade, saw, file, can opener in the long slots (can opener doesn't need to be long, but it's easier to hook a can that way) and EXTRA THICC (3 slot) Phillips on the short slots on one handle and two flatheads and an awl on the short slots on the other. Hard to think of a basic day-to-day situation where I'd need more than that, and the Bear frame seems stout and sturdy, but small enough to pocket.

I cut tape to open a bag of Sutliff creme brule.
I don't recall having tried any of Sutliff's tobacco. My preferred pipe tobaccos were Burley and English blends.

Razel opened a Bear Jaws Sportsman.
I'm interested in any an all further evaluation of the Bear Jaws.

Day 18

Since we're talking sheaths, here's one of the Garberg in its sheath. Mine came with both a belt loop and the multi-mount. Note the way the knife is placed in the sheath.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The multi-mount seemed like a good idea when I bought the Garberg. Now, I'm not certain. I've never used the multi-mount, and its Velcro seems a little light-duty. Again, note the way the knife is placed. Sos24 doubtless knows this trick already, but just in case any lefties are unfamiliar, the sheath is truly ambidextrous. Changing its handedness is a simple matter of flipping the knife the other way.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Some people aren't fond of Mora's polymer sheaths, but I have no issues with them. They hold securely, and I appreciate the drain holes at the bottom. :tu:
