I don't see an option to go back and edit a post.  One of my items sold and I wanted to update the ad.  Is that possible?

Yeah, it would be nice if we could edit our posts in perpetuity.  But once upon a time, an awesome thread was completely erased by its author and many tears were shed.  So no more.

Yes, pretty much this.

The only thing I hold on higher regard than our members is the information that has been amassed over the past nineteen years, which has benefitted an untold amount of people.

It is unthinkable tp me that someone would do such things to the community at large, but I also feel that it's my responsibility to ensure that doesn't happen again.

When I want to update a no longer modifiable post, I just quote it and change whatever needs changing, adding a line on top stating it's an update. It's faster, I can do it by myself and it awlso triggers a notification to everyone who subscribed for notifications.
