The Vanishing Act: The Victorinox and the Whirling Waters

How a Knife Met Its Fate in the Depths Below
Of all the ways a beloved Victorinox Super Tinker Knife might vanish from one’s life, few can match the bewildering mix of embarrassment and disbelief that comes with losing it to the swirling tides of a commode mid-flush. This is not a tale of pockets or careless handling, but one set in the quiet routine of preparing for the day—a moment when order and readiness were supposed to reign supreme, only to be upended by a single, fateful accident.
The Setting: Morning Preparations
The day began as usual, sunlight filtering softly into the bathroom as I dressed for the day. The Super Tinker Knife, always close at hand, had been set on the back of the commode—a seemingly safe and convenient spot while the morning’s ensemble was assembled. The knife, with its familiar red handle and gleaming tools, waited patiently as shirtsleeves were rolled and belt fastened.
The Mishap: A Slip and a Swirl
All at once, the inevitable happened. In a moment of shifting clothes, my elbow brushed the knife, sending it skittering off the smooth porcelain surface. Time seemed to slow as it teetered on the brink, then toppled, falling directly into the open commode below—just as the flush was set in motion. The timing could not have been more unfortunate: the knife landed with a muted clink, and before a hand could snatch it up, it was caught in the powerful vortex and swept down into the mysterious underworld of pipes and water.
Astonishment and Aftermath
For a moment, all was still except for the fading gurgle of water. I stood, half-dressed and wholly stunned, staring at the commode and the vanished knife. The Victorinox Super Tinker Knife, a companion to countless mornings and projects, had been claimed by the plumbing in an unpredictable instant.
Theories and Speculation
The Journey Theory: Some say the knife would travel through pipes, perhaps surfacing miles away in a distant treatment plant, its blades gleaming in the sun as a plumber held it aloft, marveling at its improbable odyssey.
The Underworld Theory: Others believe the knife joined a secret trove of lost bathroom artifacts deep beneath the town, where it presides as monarch among toothbrushes and combs.
The Redemption Theory: A few optimists hold out hope that, one day, the knife might be recovered during a routine maintenance, restored to its owner after an epic journey through pipes and tunnels.
Lessons Learned
From that day forward, I adopted a new habit: never leaving valuables resting atop the commode, however convenient it might seem in the rush of morning. The story of the Super Tinker and the flushing commode became a quirky warning about moments when routine collides with the unexpected.
So ends another chapter in the curious chronicles of lost things—a Victorinox Super Tinker Knife, spirited away not by carelessness, but by the perfect storm of timing, gravity, and the whirling waters below.
So now with a replacement Super Tinker in my pocket, I'm back to my daily activities, taking place the contents of my pockets on a shelf in the closet while getting ready in the morning!
Be careful where you place your knife!

A SUPER TINKER you say?
Was this on main floor of resident single family home, or second floor bathroom?
Or, an apartment building, single floor, or high rise?
Oh! The ride your TINKER took and tales it could recant.
Sharing your and reliving that very moment time seemed to stop must have been most painful.
Helplessness,
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!
Hope yours is as good!

As others have noted, I would be a little surprised if the SAK made it past the trap in the toilet.
At least it was a common model, easily replaced.
Murphy’s Law as applied to toilets: Any object placed where it could possibly fall or be knocked into a toilet will end up in said toilet.

When the super tinker went down the drain, I tried to recover the knife. I ran to my shop and grabbed a plumbers snake then mounted a small strong magnet to the end of the snake and ran it down the commode drain, however no luck finding the knife. I then went to a drain cleanout and tried the plumber snake and magnet again, with no luck.
When I built my home, I specified high flow toilets. The high flow plumbing did indeed work, no clogs, no Super Tinker. I lost a knife and learned a lesson!
Cheers!

Some idiot asked my friend Everett to unclog a flusher at a place where he and his father both worked. Everett decided to dig up a pipe and hold a fire hose in the end. He didn't want to make a mess, so he asked his father to go in and listen at the stool to see if the water was coming through. One second after turning on the tap, Everett heard the screams from inside. He turned off the stream, but it was already far too late. True story.
Best wishes. G

Hey Knifecoop,
Sorry to hear your story, but it was a fun read. Earlier this year I dropped a 2024 LE Pioneer X while working outside. It took one bounce and disappeared down a narrow slot where my deck covers a basement window well. I thought I could fish it out with a magnet, but had no luck.
I used to work at a wastewater treatment plant, so I can tell you that if your Super Tinker makes it out of your house (seems like it has), and if it makes its way through the sanitary sewer system (might take months, years, or decades), it will eventually end up caught on the bar screen at the plant. The bar screen is just what it sounds like, a screen of bars set 1/4"-1/2" apart that influent sewage passes through. Its purpose is to protect valves, pumps, and other appurtenances downstream from clog-causing things. You can think of it like the portcullis of a medieval fortress.
Over the years, unexpected things I saw in the bar screenings included needles, razor blades, drugs, cash, diamond engagement rings, goldfish, Barbie dolls, tennis shoes, dead raccoons, tree limbs, a fire extinguisher, a mile-long length of twine, thousands and thousands of turkey heads, and a railroad tie. The usual things you see everyday include everything people flush, but shouldn't. I'll let you use your imagination.
Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if some industrious maintenance guy or plant operator finds your SAK someday, cleans it up, and puts it to use. Thanks for sharing your story!
