Used my pocket lens to check the specs on a charger, and decided to take this fun shot.

Day 46: The dissertation-writing is getting tough. I'm starting to repeat myself in certain sections and not focusing enough on other sections... Here's a photo of two very good models — one with a lot of and one with very few tools.

I forgot to add: What's that pocket lens thing, BPR? It looks very cool! Kinda like a card-sized, plastic magnifying glass?

Tuisto, I have both questions and answers, but it's nearly bed time. Gonna post quick and will check in tomorrow.

OK, now that I have a little more time:

The card is a "pocket Fresnel lens." They're generally marketed as fire starters, but I'd be pretty nervous if I had to rely on it for that. Does fine with fine print though. In bulk, you can get them for under a buck. I give 'em as  stocking stuffers, etc. That one's been in my wallet for a few years, and is starting to get kind of scuffed up, even with the sleeve. Most of them awlso have a ruler, which is a handy little bonus.

What're you studying/what's your dissertation about?

We're flying this weekend, but my wife likes to check a bag, so the Soldier is going to hop a ride in there.

Oh, very very cool! I'll have to look for those; they may come in handy since my eyes are pretty much shot after ~33 years of reading effectively nonstop. I'm doing my PhD in historical (Indo-European) linguistics, and my dissertation is on phonological developments between Proto-Indo-European (the ancestor language to everything from Irish to English to Russian to Persian to Hindi) and Proto-Indo-Iranian (the language ancestral to the Iranian languages and the non-Dravidian Indian languages). It's a very niche field and I have effectively zero job prospects once I'm finished the PhD. But hey, at least I'm one of like four people on the planet who can read Tocharian B off the page. Or speak Sanskrit. Or forge Ancient Greek inscriptions .

Day 47: Here's my Soldier alongside another type of Soldier.

Got it, call Tuisto when I mispronounce the inscription in the weird old book and it starts hailing blood.

That does sound really cool though. Linguistics is something I've had a long interest in, but never really studied in depth.

Soldier with a spork that I didn't originally include in my Sporkman badge thread, because I had temporarily lost track of it. I have corrected that oversight.

Hahaha, that's exactly what I'm here for! I had a professor when I was doing my MA who knew so many languages it'd make one's head spin (although, most of the people at the top of our field have expert knowledge of 40+ Indo-European languages; it boggles my mind). But anyways, once or twice I went into his office and he'd be standing there, staring out the window, reading from some old dusty book and muttering under his breath in some ancient language or another. It just reminded me of something out of Tolkien (who was also a historical linguist)! I hope you're having a good time in Texas!

Day 48: Here's the Soldier with the little guy again. We have to make a really tough decision about a dog we've been fostering for six months now: someone put in an application to adopt him, so we have to decide whether to give the big guy (not the Corgi) up. Julia thinks it's the pragmatic thing to do, since we're really not sure where we'll be living after I finish my PhD, but I think we'd miss him terribly and that we've really come to enjoy having him around. He's become part of the family and I really don't want to give him up, even though I know my decision is based mainly off emotional reasons and not logical ones like Julia's...

Julia has good instincts.  There is nothing wrong with letting someone else enjoy the companionship of the dog you have been caring for the last six months.   If I owned the Corgi, I would fight like a cornered rat before I let that one go.  Best wishes.  G

I can see how it would be difficult to give him up.

Day 49: Here's the Soldier helping us prune the grapevine in our backyard.

So, regarding Doggimus Maximus, we got a bit of additional information about the potential adopter that led us to believe we would be 100% making the correct decision in adopting him ourselves. In my opinion, based on the — admittedly quite sparse — information we got from the shelter, it seemed as though the individual attempting to adopt would absolutely not be in a place where they'd be able to adequately care for the big guy. So, we're going to go tomorrow and sign all the paperwork and make it official.

Hopefully the last of these big catch up days. I've been pretty bad at keeping up this month. Open to new mini challenge ideas, or I'll get another one up towards the end of the week.

D+58 and mini challenge

My wife is doing a one night girls trip tonight. I was doing some cleaning up in my office and found some blank cards, so I wrote her one. I had to refill my fountain pen halfway through, and decided to seal the envelope with a thumbprint, since I was getting some on my finger anyway. Results were mixed.

I think these screws will just have to be replaced if I ever want to actually tighten this handle. It's just the detergent cupboard, not really important.

Funny how that would be considered hopelessly dated in many fields, but I’m guessing Old Persian hasn’t changed in a few centuries, or maybe millennia.

Haha, indeed — Old Persian is the Persian language from the late 6th c BC - 333 BC (Alexander's conquest of Persia), carved in stone in Behistun and Naqsh-e-Rostam, Iran. It's about a thousand years later than the earliest attested (Mycenaean) Greek and about a thousand years earlier than the earliest Old English. Middle Persian was from 333 BC to the Muslim conquest in the 7th c AD. From then until now is considered Modern Persian, which is insane in terms of longevity. For comparison, Old English is from the 8th c AD to about the Norman conquest in 1066. Old Lithuanian and Old Albanian are 16th c AD! Most people think Persian (and other Iranian tribes/languages) are some kind of Arabic but they're actually Indo-European like English, German, Russian, Spanish, French, Greek, Hindi, Armenian etc. etc. There are newer grammars of Old Persian, but this one is by far the best.
