Day 52: another one of the greatest grammars of all time, written by Roland G. Kent when he was at University of Pennsylvania in 1950, 2nd ed 1953 — absolutely fantastic.

That Soldier looks so huge like that were least triple size

Today begins the final countdown! We're awl short timers now!  :woohoo:
I celebrated with a pork chop and some whirled peas. Soldier did duty cutting the chop, spreading butter on my toast, and awlso prying up the tab on my can of root beer.

Haha, yes because this book is huge, so the photo has some weird depth perception trickery.

Day 53: More photos of the book for size reference!

Also, WECSOG, that looks delicious!

The alox Vics are clearly the premier "gentleman's multitool". Slim enough (especially the 84s) to fit anywhere, and classy enough to look good in use. Went to a fancy Rotary dinner last night.

Spring cleaning. Anyone need any cables? (Not the giant network cable, that's my LAN party special from college.)

Day 54: used the Soldier to cut some thread for Julia's sewing. I can't believe how sharp I got this thing... I managed to cut the thread with no more pressure than just the weight of the blade itself! I've really been putting in some time sharpening and I'm just glad I finally got somewhat proficient at it.

One of the nice things about using a push mower is that the first mow of the year isn't too dramatic. Decided to touch things up since everyone will be over tomorrow for Easter. Probably won't mow again for a couple weeks, but will depend on the weather.

Great stuff, everyone! BPR, I think you may have posted one of these posts in the SAKS & Snacks thread instead of here. Here's another glamour shot with the big guy (as he does his best approximation of a diver).

Doh! Reposting the pic and challenge correctly:

NEW MINI CHALLENGE: Courtesy of WESCOG, "soldiers use entrenching tools quite often. How about a pic of the Soldier knife with an E-tool or other digging device?"

Challenge will be active until Monday, the 13th. Bonus points if you can actually find a good excuse to dig a hole (do some gardening, it's spring), vs just digging one to toss your knife in.

D+69 and 70

Working on a native pollinator garden this weekend and called for reinforcements.

These Hori Hori were great for digging for small roots, but the root saw on the Glock was perfect when we were trying to get a big shrub out.

Mini Mission: E-tool

Romanian military surplus E-tool. Very similar to the Russian Spetznaz fighting shovel, and probably patterned after it. This one showed up in the Anniversary Challenge last July immediately after I picked it up at one of the best milsurp stores I've ever visited, in southern Michigan. Or was it northern Indiana?  I know I made a note of it so I could find it again.

I awlso have a Cold Steel Spetznaz shovel that I have had for probably 10+ years. That's a good one too, but this one has more cred, being actual military surplus.

Day 56 (I need to catch up!): Here's the first in a series of 'really good stuff (in Tuisto's opinion)'. Blake's work is absolutely magnificent; after Coleridge he's the best of the Romantic poets.

'To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.

...

Every Night & every Morn
Some to Misery are Born.
Every Morn & every Night
Some are Born to sweet Delight.
Some are Born to sweet Delight,
Some are born to Endless Night.'

Those lines are from Auguries of Innocence — definitely one of my favourites of his poems. I hope this doesn't come off as too pretentious .

Also, BPR, where did you find that flavour of that soda??? I've looked everywhere for the cola flavour and can't find it anywhere!

Day 57: Really good things, vol. 2: Herodotus' Histories — this is one of the coolest parts of the book, wherein Cyrus diverts the Euphrates to sack Babylon, effectively beginning the Achaemenid empire.
